The games have gotten better ( better game engines, snappier aiming and movement, higher frame rates, this has nothing to do with your subjective view of what game you happen to like ), the flow of information is now instant and global. People meta game the fuck out of everything, they find the optimal strategies week after the game is out, people have more free time to play and learn the games they play, the hardware is also vastly improved from the times of Return to Castle Wolfenstein etc. Someone who dedicates their entire early childhood into grinding FPS games is absolutely going to body online lobbies until they hit the age wall and their skills start to deteriorate.
