I disagree. I think they did well. They stuck with what worked. They didn't try to get creative or re-write their formula. They just rehashed the same, familiar gameplay and systems over and over and made gold with it.

Ubisoft, in their infinite stupidity, decided to make the one black man from the time period named Yasuke a playable main character in a game set in medieval Japan and then proceeded to make up excuses why he fits the time period instead of a Japanese guy. To dig the knife deeper they already had an established story and main character named Yamauchi Taka who was native Japanese and an Assassin who could have been the "samurai" main character with some retcons and worked just fine. Yasuke himself also would have worked completely fine as someone who worked to convey information to the Assassins as an undercover agent, or someone who was tricking the Templars and being an ally of Taka and Naoe with people actually being able to endear themselves to him with no controversy at all.

This led to the historian who was pushing for the man's historicity to be outed as a complete fraud who lied about who Yasuke actually was and was massively embellishing just what kind of person he was. He said Yasuke was a samurai that would be fighting for Nobunaga instead of just some guy carrying his swords or doing menial tasks.

The problem is that Shadows improved on the AC formula heavily thanks to the addition of prone, massively better stealth design across the board (Though rooftops are broken and break the AI so it's multiple steps forward but one step back), combat is actually hard but fair on Nightmare and you can actually die compared to Nightmare/Draugr on the other new AC games, seasons give so much variety, and the castles are easily the best in the series. Even Yasuke ended up being one of the better written characters in the game. So now we have this Unity situation where everyone refuses to play the game because of the bad press or just outright stupidity from Ubisoft surrounding it and Ubisoft will think people hate the massive improvements the game brought because of the controversy and we'll end up with them ignoring them or downplaying them.

You completely misunderstand what the AC games are. They are alternative history only in the sense that we don't know all the nitty gritty details of history and it fills in those gaps, but the history is identical to what we have in reality as far as knowledge goes. If you were placed into the AC universe as it was right now it would be 1:1 what you experience currently in real life except Abstergo is the Apple or Microsoft of that universe and they make all the big products everyone buys. If you went on the internet or a library it would be exactly like what you can learn about right now.

When you introduce Yasuke being an actual samurai who is still running around murdering people including the heads of Japan after Nobunaga kicked the bucket it introduces an enormous amount of issues that would have been recorded in the history books.

The funniest part is in-game he's a genuinely good man who is soft-spoken and cares about the people around him, wants to find purpose in his life, tries to listen to people, understands he's a stranger and not really wanted in Japan and doesn't fight it but merely ask why they feel that way (Like with Tomiko at the Hideout who is simply scared of him because of him being a samurai and her impression of samurai being murderers who relish in the killing), and questions his actions while fighting for Nobunaga's beliefs in unifying Japan due to all the bloodshed. Yeah, definitely only get it on sale. It's still bloated like the other newer AC games (I'm 180 hours in and only just finished every task that's not assassinating targets and random side quests) and is probably the second longest game in the entire series to 100% behind Valhalla. Only 20-30ish of those hours were filling out the fog of war in parts of the map you weren't supposed to do so and even when discounting those it's still longer than Odyssey and Origins because I still have the rest of the game to go and the DLC to go.

They reworked the target system as well. There's now the main Onryo and like 10 different enemy factions to also go after with their own small stories that have nothing to do with the Templars (Onryo). You can also spare some of the targets too. I'm right now going after this merchant guild called the Iron Hand and you can spare all the merchants if you want even if one of them is genuinely a bad guy simply because the guy who asked for your helps wants their help down the road.

Keep in mind that if you play Yasuke the difficulty drops quite a bit even on Nightmare because he has a lot of stuff that hits AoE, he can tank like 4 hits as long as his armor is level matched, he gains Adrenaline like it's water raining down on him, and he just spews damage. Just look at this nonsense. It's also encouraged to do posture damage in Shadows and one of the passives from an item you get immediately on the third not Battle Pass is a 20% chance to do an extra posture attack (What you see in the webm) which is so broken I can't begin to explain. Bleed for some reason on Yasuke is also beyond overpowered and does insane damage for no reason whereas on Naoe it's more of a detriment.

Naoe is way more fun to play overall and the whole game is clearly designed around her, but when you want catharsis in combat Yasuke feels amazing to just break down a castle's doors and summarily execute everyone zone by zone.

Call me a blind optimist but this controversy is not Unity's bug-ridden release. This should purely be seen as a marketing failure, hoping to ride on a flimsy diversity wave while the game itself saw not much scrutiny in gameplay.

You're thinking about this logically rather than how Ubisoft will very likely see it. Unity's massive failure paired with Syndicate underperforming led to the entire brand reboot as a whole. The only mechanic that has really stuck since Unity has been Parkour Up/Down and the gameplay has otherwise been wholly reworked from the combat to basic stealth.

Since then there's been no real controversies outside of hate for Odyssey's RPG focus which caused them to pivot to what you see in Valhalla, Mirage, and Shadows to downplay many of the things Odyssey did. Valhalla didn't even have a working transmog system until like a year or two after release which forced you to talk to the smithy at Ravensthorpe to even do, and it took until Mirage to get that back at launch.

That's why I'm worried because they're going to see the backlash to Yasuke and how Shadows underperformed and likely step away from the fantastic seasons system, the fantastic focus on prioritizing stealth and designing everything around it, the more difficulty gameplay, and so on and push for paring stuff back even if it has nothing to do with the gameplay.

What are you even talking about? I outright said they already did The Fall to cover the Russian Revolution and Chronicles Russia was either during or after it, I forgot which. My point is that Russia currently going full retard and making everyone across the globe hate them is going to deter Ubisoft even remotely thinking about doing a historical Russia game any time soon. Until the Ukraine war ends and like 5 years pass I don't see them touching Russia with a ten foot pole.

Realistically what we see is what they had a dev ranting about in Black Flag. Mongols and the Wild West are the likely future games since they've done Syndicate and Unity already.

The thing is I think it made sense for Ubisoft at the time to put the gameplay under scrutiny with the release of Syndicate and Unity. They have been criticized as stale then, and if Unity's attempt to revamp features of the original gameplay skeleton ended up with a horrendously bugged release then it made sense to take a step back and reboot the system with Origins/Odyssey.
For this one, theres not really anything that'd warrant a huge u-turn for the improvements. Some parts will be pared back just to get back on even footing, but since the skeleton is already there they'll just have to focus mostly on how to dress it up well enough for people to buy it.

That is a fair assessment since they could very clearly see it was Yasuke causing the issues and not glitches or the gameplay, it's just that they tend to react pretty hard when people start complaining. Layla's existence for example, now we have no Modern Day pretty much at all because everyone hated Layla but rather this Animus Ego thing, removing almost all of Modern Day in Unity because people were pissed about Black Flag and Rogue, and now Black Flag Remake has no Modern Day segments at all because they just want to remake the Edward side.

I'm cautious about when major issues like this happen to Ubisoft.

Most of the complaints I've heard is about Yasuke, that's my point. Apart from the property destruction that came along with his archetype I haven't heard anything about the gameplay that Ubisoft would react hard to. "Players hated modern day filler so no more modern day" makes sense even if it's heavy handed. "People hated Yasukes inclusion so no more prone" makes zero sense whatsoever especially when it's easier to port features that are already there.

Ass Creed as a whole needs to scale the fuck down to pure basics of hiding in plain sight to kill a given target, maybe climbing a building for a better view to a kill. I don't care if the seasons alter enemy visibility, or make enemies notice Naoe's feet. I hate the Origin's style of combat. I fucking despise the RPG-isms. I'm more than fine with even real time day and night fucking off because if I wanted to play a Stealth game where light mattered to that degree, I'd play fucking Splinter Cell instead. I'd sooner have the dogshit disguise system of Unity redesigned then return than anything added post Origins.

They are at their best with city exploration, I'm more praising the seasons system because they keep doing the country system instead so if they make future games using the country system they really should do it again, I just really want them to tone down how quickly seasons pass because it feels like I can't explore as freely as I'd like.

They will never change that. We're talking about a company that added "canon mode" to cater to dumbfucks that don't want to make a decision in a RPG. The seasons quickly passing is without a doubt the result of them noticing players struggling with a certain season, so they made it pass as quickly as possible without looking like complete shit, and they failed because seasonal transitions are jarring according to what I've gathered.

Canon Mode is objectively one of the best things they added and I'm glad it exists. Assassin's Creed should never have had choices to begin with, it's literally the antithesis to how the Animus works and makes no sense why it exists. They should have backported it to Odyssey and Valhalla too.

Missed this, it's not jarring. When the bar fills half way it does a mid-season reset of your scouts and the contracts when you fast travel or enter the Hideout, and then when the full bar fills it does the same when you fast travel or enter the Hideout but changes seasons to the next one. If you don't fast travel or enter your Hideout you can keep seasons from ever changing it just means you have to run everywhere on foot which takes forever.

It also gives you a loading screen of 3-4 locations in the new season before plopping you into it to show you it's transitioned to the next season. The only way it would be jarring is if you didn't look at the meter which is always available on your map screen and unless you physically walk into the Hideout or very specific main story missions it won't progress you at all.

Yasuke controversy isn't related to anything technical so they should be putting questions on the non-technical side on this. Jacob and Evie(upgraded the animus), Bayek(upgraded the animus), Misthios and Eivor(dna so ancient the Animus is making shit up + Isu influence in dna or gear), Basim(lmao he's so fast for the animus). I don't know shit about the plot, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some handwave excuse with Yasuke and Naoe. Speaking of which, I've barely heard anybody talk about what's happening in modern time in Shadows.

It's Layla's specific Animus model that allows it to even work, and it still adheres to normal syncing logic you just don't need as much DNA to do so.

That's not how it works at all. It doesn't know if Kassandra or Alexios's DNA is on the Spear of Eden because both of them used it at one point and canonically Kassandra killed Deimos after he killed Myrinne so his blood would likely still be on it somewhere. Since you as the user of the Animus are just wearing a skin on top of an avatar to help sync memories cleanly it basically fakes it until it makes it. We also know Alexios is canonically Deimos which means you never had a choice to begin with and the stuff presented for the choice never happened since canonically it synced to Kassandra.

Eivor is canonically female and the Animus outright tells you this because the canon option is to "Let the Animus decide" which never presents Havi as an option outside of the Isu fever dreams when Eivor is tripping balls or in a Memory Corridor. The choice to be either male or female is not canonical and never happened, and even if you want to argue it does it's the same skin situation as in Odyssey and Brotherhood's multiplayer.

Because it's all tied to the not Battle Pass and very few missions where you're stopping a rogue AI from being created. They pared it down heavily for Shadows.
