Slowly becoming an IGN journalist
Have any of you gotten to a point where your body legit just can’t keep up with all video games? Like sure some games like animal crossing or whatever a 3 year old can do, but you ever try replaying dark souls or something that you used to be a pro at and you just CANT hit the buttons right? You’re consistently too slow in a way that doesn’t even feel like a skill issue. Like your brain just straight up deteriorated in a way since you were a kid?

I used to be a master at Halo. I could make LASO look like a breeze, and won 99% of multiplayer games. Now I struggle with normal (yeah seriously)

Idk what is going on but it’s legitimately depressing. The more time goes by the worse I get. It’s such a first world complaint but video games are like the biggest thing that brings me joy, and I’m at the point where a good amount are just completely inaccessible to me. Yall have any advice besides just “get good”?

Old people are so corny. Why do none of you realize that you gotta read books or some shit? Your bodies and brains just aren't made for video games anymore.

How old are you?

I'm 34 years old and I definitely feel like in terms of brain speed and pure reactions, I'm past the peak and it's going down, but I haven't lost any of my patience and drive so something like Dark Souls isn't gonna give me any particular big trouble. I beat Elden Ring just "fine" (Tons of deaths of course), for example, and without summons cause I'm autistic.

As for multiplayer games, give up, bro. Competitive multiplayer games were never the young man's game and that's more true now than ever. Multiplayer games now all literally or figuratively die within the first two months and only the sweatiest remain. The catalog is too wide.

I’m 25, but I have a chronic illness (not covid or anything) that’s slowly deteriorating me from the inside. It really sucks, my doc says after observing me it’s likely not goin to be fatal, but it’ll get worse before it gets better and even then I’ll never truly recover. And yeah, it just sucks. Finally have a job to pay for my hobby and no serious responsibilities, I can finally play games on my own terms, except now I basically can’t

Anonymous No.723549829 [Report] >>723550428 >>723552958
Actually, the older I get, the more patience I have, and I generally play better. Like, in my youth, no matter the game, I was holding my analog stick forward and mashing whatever attack felt right. The idea of sitting back and observing and enemy before engaging never crossed my mind.

I'm 34 btw. Wife and kids. Try playing Dark Souls or MH with a toddler on your lap trying to fiddle with the control as you wave it wildly out of his reach. Harder than whatever the hell a LASO is. Also, stop playing PvP.

I'm 32 and have a degenerative condition that makes it hard to sit at a desk for long periods of time (like after an hour I'll start getting neck and lower back pains) & I'm constantly fatigued so now I'm pretty shit (relative to how I used to be) at first person shooters when I used to be really good in my teens/early 20s.

I prefer to just play single player games on my oled tv with a controller these days. No trouble with reflexes or hard games yet.

I'm almost 40 and I've never run into this issue. If anything ironically it feels the opposite where games are getting easier and easier where before I would brute force solutions or try too hard to carve an identity for myself in multiplayer games. I 100% don't have the reflexes I used to but I never felt as if my hand eye coordination suffered in any capacity, most of the times I approach things more patiently and if anything look for easier/lazier ways to do things. Even doing shit like speedrun tricks if I'm doing a replay or randomizer or some shit, I spend time learning how to do them and learning an easier way to do the same thing. I guess I also make concessions as well like allowing turbo for mashy games as well like older NES games since I don't really care about mashing being a valuable skill.

When i was younger I felt like if things didnt work a certain way then it would be a bad game to me or some shit, which made me much worse as a result. Ive beaten more games now than I ever have try harding on fightan.

Oh man, I abuse the hell out of turbo. I was never good at mashing and that shit is way worse now. It's also hella useful for gindy games like RPGs. One funny thing I came across is when playing KH, I would sometimes turbo the attack button. The way that game's combat works, with Sora's distance from the enemy and direction affecting what kind of attack will come out, it ended up feeling a lot like FFXV, a game much maligned for playing itself. Turns out it's not much different than KH.

I only wish there were a way to turbo analog stick commands. I can't be arsed to waggle the stick around at efficient speeds, and even if I did, such movements are the bane of controller longevity.

Only issue I've got is that now that it's so much easier for me to buy games they feel less special on average and if a game doesn't wow me I drop it almost immediately rather than playing it simply because it's one of the few I have.

But the flipside to that is that if a game really does grab my interest it GRABS my fucking interest, because it's gotta be real special to make it past the new hurdle.

I'm not good at video games, even worse in multiplayer. It was like that back then, pretty much the same now.
Thankfully I still can enjoy video games.
Difficulty and deep, complex gameplay/system is nice, but honestly as long as the game is fun I'd play it. Yes I play both new and old games. My only exception is f2p and gacha.
Hopefully you can enjoy video games again anon.

I feel that, I'm unsure about the newer KH games though because thats a pretty good example of doing shit lazily in an alternative way. Like in kh1 and 2 I rarely find myself pressing attack often, and instead abusing limits and magic and forms and etc, there's a lot of downtime in those games if you know how to look for it which also makes the games a lot more fun too.

Maybe? Depends if it's fun or not. In general if I'm not too interested in the game I would buy it on sale like a year or two later (which is 80% of new games). Though I don't really play online/multiplayer shooter.

Definitely KH1 is more methodical, which is why I considerate it the superior battle system. There are plenty of more focused action games I can play if I wanted to memorized precise revenge values and DM dodges. But even in KH2, you can turbo a bunch of it (you just need to shut it off to reliably access the rest of the menu).

I've bought a few third party controllers that can do macros and none ever have stick functions which kinda suck. Its not too bad given they use hall effect/TMR and I've yet to see any degradation. But macros are based, sometimes there is just no reason to go through extra execution effort for no real gain.

I didn't play games for twelve years but spent my youth playing counter strike and cod. I played Doom Eternal on nightmare because I knew that I could beat it even if my hands were retarded. It was actually miserable trying to overcome the rot but by the time I finished I was 'back' and I've been fine since. I outplay most of my old cod buddies but I was pretty good before I stopped back in the day. I'm 39 and while my back hurts I've still 'got it' after climbing that mountain. I have to practice newer games to catch up, like extraction shooters, but after awhile it still clicks like it did when I was a kid.

You probably don't play as much or as intensely as you used to and you're holding yourself to an old standard. If you aren't competing at the highest level the differences in reaction time aren't what's holding you back, it's just the low hanging fruit to absorb blame. Try actually practicing to get better and you'll see huge gains in a very short period of time.
