That guy you replied to is baiting, no way HoD is anything but last. Many accusations people levy at SotN are so much worse in HoD (under tuned damage and lack of interesting combat encounters). I have noticed a bit more contrarianism against SotN probably as a response to people overrating it.
With that being said Aria and the DS trilogy are just more well polished games overall. The combat design allows more on the fly adaptation and player expression with souls/character switching/glyphs. Progression is more streamlined: cleaner drip drop of new items and abilities that often loop back around and open up more of the castle. The aggressive and pattern heavy bosses/enemies reward good positioning and deliberately timed attacks. SotN is great but the music and spritework do the heavy lifting.

HoD is just a slightly weaker CotM
It got memed on by retards who went 'oh um lolz the hallways are long since they put in a dash mechanic'

It's like bitching SotN is 'bad' due to hallways being made to run through in wolf form

I've got 119% map completion but got bored of it.
And yes you are impossible to hit with that dash that doubles as both an animation cancelling offensive juggernaut and a supersonic movement tool that invalidates any need for intelligent positioning. These games revolve around being able to hit your enemy while they can't hit you and you can get in and get out on anything from the very start.

i noticed this too, you tend to whiff a lot more whith the swinging weapons in dawn than you do in aria. this is because dawn changed the swing arcs from left (which is how they are in aria) to right (dawn's swing arcs).

in dawn, a large part of the weapon hitbox is directly behind you, basically swinging at nothing. so impractical.

This used to be one of my least favorites due to the story and the characters seeming pretty boring to me. The game mechanics felt a little lackluster to me compared to something like SOTN or Aria as well. I think it has ended up becoming my most replayed Castlevania. It's one of the only modern style Castlevania games that feels like it has a decent difficulty balance and is fun to play and overcome the challenges. Most modern formula games are too easy and I find Circle of the Moon really fun to play. Aria is still my overall favorite. The GBA era was great.

A 3rd Sorrow game that finishes off the time travel/Galamoth plot thread that was hinted at in Judgement and CoD. Include a castle with the usual monsters carrying souls, but make it so Galamoth's lair (ie. the final area) is filled with synthetic/mechanical monsters who don't have souls for you to absorb.

Also make Death into a good guy with a speaking role and make it so the final battle is Soma and Death vs. Galamoth and The Time Reaper.

There's an interview from 1997 where some form of 1999 got suggested by a designer. It seems more like it might've been a game idea that got turned into the backstory for Aria of Sorrow some years later.

>Furukawa:...As for Richter, the events of Bloodlines create the background for the story of Symphony of the Night, and I can’t confirm what happens to the Belmont clan after Richter. But that being the case, have you thought about what the future might hold? I like to think that one of the Belmonts is, unbeknownst to all, locked in battle with the King of Terror prophesized by Nostradmus to appear in July 1999.

I don't think it ever made serious headway in development as a game but it seems like something we might've gotten if Castlevania went on long enough, as opposed to Megaman where the Elf Wars were ALWAYS conceived as just background for the Zero series.

Its an acquired taste, and even if you really love it you can't rank it higher than many of the other genuinely good CV games.

Juste's movement is incredible, the atmosphere is subtly creepy (especially castle B) and you have lots of customization of whip tips / subweapons / spellbooks / etc. The difficulty of the game is very low (with a few spikes up here and there) and the biggest strike against the game is navigation. It isn't just that castle A and B both exist, but you have to criss-cross through them to get to different areas and even for those who have played the game before you can get lost or confused about which one you need to be in at the moment.

I know what you mean, I'm just saying they used those letters because they resemble the latin letters A e n e i d. I know they're not actually equivalent to those letters. It's easier to see to me because I don't know any cyrillic so I just interpret those as latin letters, like Д looks like a distorted A to me even though it's something different most likely

You probably won't like it then. Castlevania games have a very basic moveset, just jump, backdash and a single attack animation (same animation both on the ground and in the air, and it can't be aimed down or up). Most of the enjoyment comes from the looter aspect where you find hundreds of slightly different swords and projectile spells, as random drops from enemies

But try Symphony of the Night on a emulator (if you're a PC fag, otherwise it's on PS4/5), it's a classic

Just try anything released after (including) SotN if you want the Metroidvania formula. The games before that are mostly linear platformers with branching paths. And the stories are mostly self contained. The one thing you need to know is that Dracula is basically the antichrist who made a deal with super Satan so he keeps coming back.

First Igarashi is full of it. He had PLENTY of chances to make that 1999 game but he never did it. I'm not going to fault him for Lament of Innocence releasing immediately after Aria of Sorrow. But the fact that Iga wasted the opportunity to make Curse of Darkness, Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclessia told me he is a bastard hack. And Konami didn't even quit on gaming even after he left since they funded the Lords of Shadow Trilogy. Iga is simply a shitty man.

The second thing I'm not fond of is the premise of the 1999 game is that the entire Earth is engulfed in Dracula's war and that the saviors of the Earth are Mary Sue Japanese shrine people. What a bunch of nonsense.

No? Lament of Innocence is a near-bottomless well of retarded. If it were a prequel to any other series its story decisions would be rightfully mocked rather than just politely ignored. HoD's story is disposable at best. Aria of Sorrow has its moments but at its core it's Dracula reincarnated as a flamboyant teenager. Dawn of Sorrow is the same thing with less charismatic antagonists. Castlevania stories have never been worth much, and the more the games focused on them the worse they became.

DMC had the excuse that iirc people were kinda meh on 4, plus it was more flamboyantly Japanese at a time when there was a backlash to that

But Castlevania remained a well liked and well regarded series, the DS ones and PSP one were all solid hits, James Rolfe helped revive a lot of interest in the classic ones, everything was smooth sailing and yet Konami still tossed it all out

That's before you even get into the fact that SOTN is synonymous with a genre that has a million different games and Konami ran off one of the godfathers of it, but again I ask, quick, name a Konami 3DS game (other than Mirror of Fate lol), which was a huge platform and they ran off the guy who made some of the most well known DS 1 games?

They made a lot more money with LoS1 than they would have with more niche games. And the reality is that the formula was feeling pretty stale for a lot of people by 2008. I was and remain more of a Classicvania fan, but I still was there and played them all and followed the conversation as it unfolded.

I don't deny that Konami wasted opportunities, but it's not like Igarashi was some brilliant master of games development. The PS2 games are junk, Judgment is sort-of junk (or at least irrelevant), and the DS games were seeing diminishing returns. I don't think Igarashi was ever going to pull out a rabbit from his stupid cosplay cowboy hat that was so dazzling it would convince Konami not to move away from video games. That would have happened even if everyone fawned over Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2 with similar sales to the first. You didn't like what they made or decided to do instead, but nothing about it was surprising to me in 2010 and it isn't confusing to me in retrospect either.

It's one of the only cases of "it's a good game but a bad X game" being true, and ironically, it was also so generic at its time of release that it wouldn't be remembered over titles like God of War or Dante's Inferno if it didn't have the Castlevania name attached to it, so it was damned if you do, damned if you don't. I played the shit out of LoS and completed every difficulty and the DLC, yet the enjoyment I got from it probably wasn't worth it killing mainline Castlevania for no reason. I don't get why they doubled down on the decision either, DMC proved that a series can survive coming back from a westernized reboot. Bloodstained was even more proof that Castlevania could get the DMC treatment with returning to its roots since an audience still exists for it.

>lol make your own Castlevania
90% of Castlevania as an IP consists of public domain properties, so you totally could. The IP itself was never the strong point, it was the developers who made the games. Who the fuck knows where those people work nowadays or if some of them are still alive. Why shouldn't you make your own Castlevania-inspired game, it's literally not illegal.

Agreed (although I loved both), but my point is that the market was being saturated with God of War style clones at that time and that LoS likely wouldn't even be remembered today if not for the Castlevania controversy. Using Dante's Inferno as an example, how many times do you even see that get brought up nowadays unless someone is memeing about Satan's dick physics? LoS would have just been another random hack and slash forgotten by everyone. My point is the Castlevania name definitely caused more people to play it and enjoy a good game, but the payoff wasn't worth obliterating the franchise it tried to reboot, so we have a decent game that's left in a really awkward existential crisis.

It's not like Castlevania was experiencing some grand renaissance prior to Lords of Shadow's announcement. It was either treading water or was embarrassing itself. Lords of Shadow didn't kill anything, anyway. Konami did. It's pretty obvious when you look at the scope of Konami's productivity over the last ten years what happened.
>But Lords of Shadow 2 flopped!
Sure did. MGSV didn't, though, and their answer was Survive and a somewhat shitty very conservative remake a decade later that runs like ass. Even if it hadn't flopped, would it have made a difference? Maybe true in 2010/2011, not true ever since.

They cratered something that had a built in audience for short term gain and stood to make nothing at all for a decade+ because of it

>I don't think Igarashi was ever going to pull out a rabbit from his stupid cosplay cowboy hat that was so dazzling it would convince Konami not to move away from video games.

I don't get the hate, the rabbit would have been the 1999 game everyone wanted to see or at least take Dracula X Chronicles visual style, apply it to a Metroidvania, boost the visuals a bit by putting it on the Vita or 3DS perhaps and booya, you'd have a stew going

I agree devils are useless, strong but no real reason to use them for anything other than accessing new areas. The kings of useless are pumpkins, but then again, it's just a reason to grind after the endgame. Not that curse of darkness is difficult, but It was fun to play and unlocking different Pokémon evolutions forced you to use different weapons. Crafting system was amazing. Weapons in general were amazing. Would not mind a pokemetroidvania again. But I would also love a spiritual successor of Lament of Innocence. The orb system was great, the relics were neat. Is the PS2 Rygar good? I remember playing the NES one and thinking it was pretty fun. The arcade version is also fun but doesn't have the exploration element.

More Bloodstained but with more girl protags or Curse Of Darkness with better level design and Ninja Gaiden combat and all the customization and weapon variety from Bloodstained

And Miyamoto gets all the praise and all the blame for everything that's ever happened at Nintendo, what of it? Iga was the producer from SotN to Order and Bloodstained still continued with the same design so while I certainly don't discount any of those directors it's clear Iga is calling the shots, not just some middle manager who handles scheduling.

I think a new game would have to be 3D to really make an impact, leave 2D for Iga. But I'd also like to see it continue what the series was doing rather than another reboot or something.

Pro good, kind hearted Christians or anything good really and anti pure evil or evil people and institutions (Church included). Same as today, if you approve of every the church has done and is doing right now you are NOT a good Christian. I.remember when I was a boy and my father showed me a painting of a "Saint" punishing infidels. And what I saw was a man torturing chained people burning their crotch with a torch. A real "are we the baddies" moment.

The perfect guard is one. The other is that the whip combos are practically the same. iirc the ground combo, lift up enemy and air juggle combo are even the same button combination. I. Never played Rygar 3d,only the very old Arcade game(hard as balls). The square, square, square, triangle finisher it's pretty similar too.

It's just devs having fun and knowing that it's just a game at the end of the day. Some weapon crafts are comedy gold. Lot of anime tropes and pop culture references just for the memesThe broomstick that let's you swipe the floor. The frying pan that burst in flames with the finisher(and opens a secret path that you need to burn down). Becoming fucking Bomberman in a castlevania game. Then there's the cool stuff like the powergloves, the tonfas and the deathscythe. And the furtive Pumpkin, so easily forgotten.
