The Evil Within
What's /v/'s conclusion on Shinji Mikami's Evil Within series ?

1st game. Atrocious tutorial neglecting to properly teach key mechanics, and abysmal balancing that may as well be designed around the player having played the game before. Fucking horrible texture pop-in that will never be fixed thanks to John Carmack.
2nd game. A boring as fuck game with basic as fuck stealth.

how could this happen? mikami should have been /our guy/ as he produced or directed RE1-4 plus the RE1 remake.

>Tutorial plays like 1 hour of Outlast because Outlast was popular
>Then it's a bunch of gauntlets of very different length
>No real inventory so fuck you if you reach item cap
>Gay ass upgrade system that has no reason to exist
>Sprint but lasts 4 seconds, except in the boring sections where you have to rub away
>Also to disable traps you have to do a bunch of gay minigames that are incredibly hard to pull off at 60 fps
The most schizophrenic and yet somehow conservatively bland 7th gen game.
Got absolutely demolished by the Remakes because it didn't understand the appeal of Resident Evil 4

First game is a minor classic, a bit rough around the edges but a great time nonetheless with great gameplay, secrets, and perfect textbook Mikami pacing

2 tries to have its cake and eat it by aiming to reel in SH fans but loses something in the process. Not as satisfying or interesting to play but clearly technically superior to the first game

Amnesia is an actual game with a rich and scary atmosphere. Outlast is basically a movie game that completely relies on jump scares for horror

First game is GOATed
Second is good but not as good, feels budget in every way. Also ruins Seb

I didn't get any SH vibes from 2 at all. 1 always felt more gruesome and grungy to me, almost grindhouse style to it. 2 is just kinda lame, you already know everything is VR so the "what the fuck is going on" aspect is gone, enemies are mostly lame with only a few neat fucked up ones (the tall gasping women) and the villains are all lame. The second half of the game having generic fire golems being the main enemy was absurd. Sebastian went from having no personality to generic gruff hero dad, which was super popular at the time 2 came out.

>>723568564
Amnesia is a searching for lamp oil through the same billion copy pasted rooms simulator, Outlast is a walking sim. I didn't like either of them, I just remember it already being a big thing by the time Outlast came out.

Penumbra is still the best game(s) they ever produced, that and The Bunker, everything else is lame. Soma is an endurance test where you try to not go insane while insufferable retard protagonist and autist chink woman debate about nothing in your ear constantly.

my most memorable moment was in the second game entering a house then falling through the world till im walking on a globe resemebling a world map. I thought it was legit something crazy the game was throwing at me but it was a bug lol. The first game was more fun second has its charm with the open world design but its executed gimicky at best.

It's basically the sequel to resident evil 4 we never got. Both games are fun, the second game is only good if you beat the first game.

First game is decent enough. While the game moves at frantic crazy pace all the time to the point of entire world changing if you take the wrong corner or save rooms being fake save rooms, it also keeps things fresh from start to finish because the player can never really predict what is going to happen next. The pacing of the game is schizophrenic but that kind of fits the whole theme of the game.

2nd game in comparison has smoother gameplay but also becomes more predictable as a result. Also the plot becomes more Hollywood with protagonist constantly going "MY DAUGHTER I GOTTA SAVE HER!" and the sinister Moebius in the first games DLC gets downgraded from a nightmarish government brainwash men in black organization into your standard megalomaniac Umbrella which keeps making retarded decisions like inserting volatile brainchips in their own heads that any hacker can detonate. The Moebius shadow creature should've been created by the shot they gave to her instead of being part of Ruviks monsters.

It has nothing to do with RE4
In RE4 you move fast and shoot accurately and the pacing is impeccable.
The only thing they have in common is bad bosses and QTEs except TEW has more of that somehow

Funny you mention that when RE4make knife is a combination of RE4 knife and Evil Within knife. The new backstab, stun and laying knife instakill animations are all from Evil Within.

I will never get over the not-Illuminati who have secretly ruled the world for thousands of years being undone by a single woman they hired despite her connection to Sebastian, who they refused to monitor at all, and once she betrayed them had their entire elite security force outgunned by a former detective with a handgun. The sheer incompetence of Moebius was hysterical.

I have played every survival horror under the sun and while TEW2 did not give me nearly as much trouble, TEW1 always felt absurdly hard to me, especially at the start. Even with stealth there is nowhere near enough matches to burn everything and if you get spotted you are so ammo starved especially early on that you are just fucking dead. Sebastian's punches being weaker than any Resident Evil knife don't help.
Anonymous No.723572036 [Report]
>>723571806
Here's how to play the game. Immediately dump all of your upgrade points into increasing the handgun's crit chance. For each enemy, punch it in the face, not to deal damage, but to stun it. When stunned line up a headshot. When you level up crit you'll be splattering heads left, right, and center. Also throw bottles at enemies faces for free kills

>>723571806
The funny thing about the matches/burning mechanic is that it's basically superfluous as soon as its introduced since you rarely run into enemies faking being dead. The game actually tricks you into thinking you need to burn bodies so they don't get back up but if you just stealth kill them or blast them hard enough they never do. The only other time matches have any real relevance is during the Laura sequences but even then it's jank as fuck because it's a 50/50 on whether burning the body as she comes out of it will set her on fire.

1 is a better game overall but I cared about the characters more in 2. 2 is far too easy to cheese with the terrible ai and I did not care for the hub areas. Creature and world design felt lacking compared to the original. JP dub is the best experience for both.

The segments with the fire guys were just kind of boring. Stephano was the peak of it but there were still some interesting segments that I enjoyed like the lower level areas you explore every now and then and the stuff with Anima. I kind of liked the idea that STEM/Union itself was somehow rebelling against its creators or gaining some kind of collective awareness/evil due to everyone's minds being linked together, at least before the Myra reveal.

That's not its only use. If you burn a downed enemy it makes everyone around him catch fire. The idea is you use it to plan ahead and take out entire groups with a single match.

actually having stealth be so useless so often is one of the things i hold against this game.
so many times the game either spawns in enemies that know exactly where you are immediately even if you're hidden, or they are scripted to notice you no matter how perfectly you sneak up on them.

Pretty good. Hot take - I liked that the second one was more open areas, so you could go where ever. You don't have that a lot in these kinda horror games. The first antagonist in the second one was also cool conceptionally with the time stop camera and the sculptures. The other two were unfortunately kinda boring after that, went from fucked up time manipulation body horror to
