Personally? The only problems I had with DS2 were ADP and shitty hitboxes as well as the nonsense world space. The story was thr usual japslop where nothing makes any sense and the developer is trying to force some cool concept, in this case brides and thrones and shiet. That said, I probably had the most fun with DS2 out of any DS-like game.

The graphics are bad, the controls are weird, most of the bosses are underwhelming and Soul Memory is terribly misunderstood. On top of that it was overrated by hack journalists who missed the boat on DeS/DaS and desperately wanted to seem like they "got it" by giving glowing 10/10 perfect reviews to DaS2, which caused a lot of backlash from the fans.

It's objectively better than Dark Souls 3 and Elden Roll but it's easy to see why most casual babies got filtered by it after 1 playthrough.

Over-promised, overhyped and severely underdelivered. On release, the game was a mess and the design misunderstood why dark soul was challenging yet satisfying.
One thing it did is to tempered expectation expectation for dark soul 3, which turned out well and made people content.

Nah, ds2 was just broken shit, especially on release. They littered high hp, high poise, fast enemies all over the map with no good solution to break poise (which ds3 had) and then nerf the previous solutions in ds1 (parry and backstab). Bosses designs are garbage compared to other soul games and there were severe overuse in guys in armors as boss.

The series overall isn't particularly good. It simply has it's shining moments - e.g. the beginning part of Elden Ring, Ds 1 until the first bell and so on.
Most of it is just a slug for the first play through - or even worse "fans" consuming youtube videos and wiki articles to power up fast so the shit parts can be handled faster.

Not exactly engaging enemies design here. Enemies are basically unstaggerable but they have shit moveset that can't hit you? Hippogres are somewhat easy enemies though (mostly because of shit moveset). There are more annoying cunts that are unstaggerable but have bullshit move on top of it.

Its slow and its edgy. For ADHD sekiro fans who need to watch YouTube sped up the game never had a chance.
Its strengths of a good story you can actually follow yourself, philosophical references, tactics, and grand exploration arent for everyone.
I still rank it below ER and BB, but to me its 3rd and light years ahead of a rythem game on rails.
There are also the autists pissed about the levels not perfectly aligning like in DS1. I dont know, Im seeing them in Rebirth threads throwing a hissyfit Rebirth wasnt 1:1 identical. They arent wrong, but their existence must be a special place in hell when minor sloppy details ruin what would otherwise be a fun experience.

Also, the backstab/parry system is completely broken. It goes from auto activate the backstab animation when you attack in the right position into forcing you to a unique "backstab" attack to trigger the backstab. That leads to situation where you move into position to backstab, and then you get a the stupid backstab "punch" but then the enemy move so slightly and you basically just punch nothing and eat shit. Also, who the fuck know where the backstab zone actually is because sometimes you get a backstab from the side but then other time don't get a backstab while hitting right from behind

It's not due to the reasons I mentioned. Ds2 backstab hitbox is already wonky on top of a wonky ass attack that needs to hit that hitbox. You can't even choose to attack an enemy regularly in the back and get forced into attack automatically that still whiff the backstab.

It's an appropriate design for an area which is about manoeuvring around cursed urns and fighting potentially multiple enemies at once in spaces limited by an environmental effect
Combat should not just be you in a circular room with an anime flipping cunt, if you want the combat to be interesting it needs to present a variety of challenges and the way you can add variety is by not having the only challenge come from how many branches the flowchart of a single enemy moveset has. Challenge can come from area design and the layout of multiple enemies in a single encounter, archers on raised levels covering guys with shields, ranged casters and room hazards, sometimes a slow enemy with a limited moveset is exactly what you should be adding to an area as part of a combined assault course

Bonewheels have one move and they're one of the most iconic enemies in souls

You have complete manual control over all of this and should be aiming your weapon properly if you know the animation isn't going to connect, the game is slow enough to do this manually and reliably

I think Looking Glass Knight ruined most other bosses for me purely because of the atmosphere of his boss room and theme.
Thunder, lightning and torrential rain crash down while a deep vocal choir blasts into your ears as this huge knight in reflective armour tests you at the highest tower in Drangleic castle to see if you are truly worthy of following in the steps in Vendrick.

Other than the Ivory King, DS2 offers nothing better in ways of a climactic end to an area imo.

The lightning bolts only appear in one single place high atop the arena that you can't even see without glitching the first person camera while the rain is missing from the corridor before it, cuts off mid-air since the effect is just three animated texture curtains in front of you and doesn't affect the floor in the back due to it using textures from fucking Undead Burg as placeholders.

It's crazy how DS2 retards took every flaws from their games and unironically embraced it as "good game design".

The hitboxes don't work? Weelllll... It forces you to always think on your feet, as you never know if an enemy can actually hit you. 8 points directional movement? Wellll, it forces you to carefully move the camera in just the right way in order to be able to jump in the jump section, it's awesome. Rolls don't work with far too many gank squads? Wellll, you need to carefully move every inch, you know, as your rolls don't work, and the many gank squads will kill you, sometimes with hitboxes that don't work. Though maybe it's just your rolls that don't work. In any case, awesome!

Nonsensical map design? Nonsensical enemy placement? All awesome. Every single failure of this game is hailed as a win, including the most basic controller supports. If DS2 crashed randomly to desktop you'd say it adds to the ambiance and the carefulness of playing the game.

Reasons why Dark Souls II was maligned:
>Soul Memory
It's bad because it counts total souls accumulated, not total souls spent, so you couldn't cease its progression. Then they added the agape ring, which works, but now it consumes your souls so if you want to twink you don't get to keep souls at all.
>weapon degradation
It was tied to frame rate, so on consoles it was fine, but on PC your weapons have the durability of wet paper towels. This is mitigated by consumables and spells, but I'd rather just not have the problem in the first place.
>enemy despawning
After they've been slain enough times, enemies will stop respawning. This is fine during a typical playthrough, but if you're the type to linger, eventually entire regions of the game will be devoid of anything in them at all. Empty maps. This is mitigated by joining the Company of Champions, but the covenant comes with its own changes that you may not wish to deal with

This is self explanatory; reds were upset because they had to farm for orbs. It's annoying busywork that could better be spent invading.

Played it after finishing DeS and DS on PS3 and I recall disliking it apart from majula hub which I loved. Guess I rollslop fatigue by then which made it even harder to get into it. Dropped ER 70hr in after entering that snowy area, and still haven't returned to the game.

They got rid of spacing and shield blocking after DS2 and made it basically impossible to avoid damage unless you press the magic button, that's the whole gameplay. As someone who played the shit out of the first game my main issue with ds2 that made me drop it is that your character will simply not attack if they are too close to an enemy. So many times I got ganked simply because my character wouldn’t swing his fucking weapon or would do this stupid pushing animation. Not having many estus flasks early game is bad design too but it’s not a deal breaker like the first thing I mentioned.

its the prettiest, coolest in the series, by far. but the hardest to get at a decent level
the dragon breath is ass, but the dragon roar is decent. it costs WAY too much stamina but it can be used right before a powerful burst attack. Also, it saved me in the first DLC, i spammed it to knock the invincible knights (before you break their coffins) into a death pit in one of the tougher rooms.

Soul Memory is like 90% of it. DS2 should really get a sequel of sorts that also plunders into deeply autistic and superfluous mechanics while being its own thing and not jerking off DS1 much like DS3 did. DS2 had so much cool shit.

That's an actual mechanic, not random at all. I think it's in all the Dark Souls games iirc, but definitely at least in 2. Basically weapons have sweet spots that deal more damage when you hit the enemy with that part of the hitbox, like when using a spear hitting the enemy with the actual tip of the weapon will deal slightly more damage than any other part of the hitbox.

iirc that was just because the game was counting multiple instances of "hits" and thus ticked the durability down quicker with higher framerates, one of the reasons why the original ds2 is garbage and that your weapon broke quickly when you swung through walls in it too.

The gameplay being tied to frame rate is just a From Software thing too in the other Souls games too, everybody knows about the Blight Town with high frames experience for example.
