Homeworld
There's something uniquely demoralizing about knowing that the devs had actually made a more traditional Homeworld game, and then some bitch was sent in who scrapped it all and replaced it with what we ended up getting.

There are devs out there who know what we want. They can make what we want. They would even like to give us what we want. But none of that matters, because corpos will swoop in, scrap all of it, and replace it with a lesbian character drama.

My disappointment was beyond comprehension.
I pre-ordered it, played it, got to the last mission, had enough and simply gave it back before it officially released.

The amount of ruin and damage this caused is beyond horrible. Being assimilated by The Beast would've been a merciful fate compared to this.

The Quest-only VR title that came out like a week before HW3 feels like its the place the writers took refuge in after they got booted off 3. Its not a literary masterpiece but it still has that homeworld feel to it and it also acknowledges cataclysm by mentioning the beast wars in the prologue
And now because 3 flopped it will probably never leave the Facebook cage and keep being unkown even to HW fans. Shit.

Games, like art, cannot be easily based on those.

That's awful and happening with so many fucking series.
>Retarded corpos try to change series to appeal to whatever the fuck is currently the most popular
>If it sells well that means people like the new direction and it's gonna continue like this from now on, the series essentially dies
>If it doesn't sell that clearly means nobody is interested in the series anymore, and it wasn't a failure specifically due to retarded changes, so series dies literally
Either way, the moment some nepo retard at the top has a brilliant idea to fuck something up, it's basically over by that point and the series is dead.

Space games in general is a complex topic, sure. But appeal of Homeworld always seemed pretty clear to me. Aesthetically and in gameplay. But that simplicity brings greater risks. If one of the basic qualities is weak, the whole things starts to crumble fast. The campaign and presentation are the main pillars of the game and they we disappointing to say the least. I'd say, if not for the retarded story and invasive cutscenes people could tolerate the subpar gameplay better too.

Yes the weirdo woman. Her face was being posted in the /v/ threads months before release.
The fantastical story where her job was to patrol the office to check if any good work was being done and strike down any cool gamedesign by invoking hierarchy may interest some but it's clearly not a story about the real world.
She wasn't Sheev ruining the whole game using her sith aura to remotely make everyone retarded.

I was following the development since 2021. The dev team gave no sign that they didn't know what they were doing and explicitly demonstrated they knew what HW was and should be until around 6 months before release when the whole marketing changed. Word was going around the famous lay offs were people from projects other than HW3 and /v/'s story goes this was caused by a few people but has nothing to do with external legislation or economic contractions.

Corporate meddling from Relic that's for sure but has any dev been interviewed about what happened exactly?

I'd give my left nut to know exactly what happened.

based on what we heard from unofficial stuff and rumours is that the narrative stuff just started to late and was rushed, which is typical culprit. Maybe corporate thought the game offered to little, which would be understandable considering how lowkey and cerebral the other games were.

Wild how one can swing miss like that though with such a concept. Low tech concept in which it makes sense to reach a bit further on narrative and maybe mechnical complexity. At that point the company deserves to fail.

The fact that Deserts of Kharak managed to more or less nail the Homeworld 'feel' despite being an entirely terrestrial game makes me suspect that the Fig posts weren't lies at the time, by that point the studio already demonstrated they fully understood what a Homeworld game should be like, the only question mark is if they were capable of making the full 3D RTS gameplay properly (which incidentally is the one part of Homeworld 3 which was mostly right, it's everything else that was turbo fucked).

whatever infected the writing department is deeply rooted and firmly entrenched. guess the company cant course correct too because of all of the lawsuits they would get if they fired all of the "girlbosses" for gross incompetence. So its easier to let the company rot and emigrate into new outfits

as for homeworld only hope is left that the owners sell it to somebody that genuinely cares it now that the IP is worthless

>There are devs out there who know what we want. They can make what we want.
anon, I watched several cope videos from their game designers, and they don't know what we want or how to make it. Game design has nothing to do with the atrocious story.
The dev was saying "ackshually the control scheme is very good when you throw out everything you know about HW1 and HW2's control scheme".
The superstructures are useless and their only purpose is to obstruct your camera view and annoy the shit out of you when trying to navigate.
All ships have to face forward to the enemy to fire at all.
Ships in movement will not fire at all.
The ship designs are so bad, generic, uninspired and unremarkable they got their own set of memes.
The devs who made the originals are no longer involved in any way shape or form. Nu-devs have taken over, and with Gearbox's publishing at the helm of everything, they made sure to release a total turd made by niggers and women designed for nobody in the world, not a single person would find anything in HW3 appealing.
All of this is on top of charging players extra to change their ship exhaust colors.
Their idea of PvE live service is a wave mode with +1% to <attribute> every round.
HW3 is a stillborn nigger turd and it could never, ever be a good game under its development circumstances.

HW3's abilities were clearly the wrong way to do it, clicking a damage boost on cooldown is useless.
Kharak did okay with its unit abilities. I liked switching my anti-air into artillery or activating turtle mode or a well timed speed boost. I even enjoyed having less unit types and instead having versatile units, with good keybinds (file editing screw you BBI) it reduced micro for this already micro intensive game.

Do you understand your whole society on a personal level like this? Getting fired from an official job isn't like a breakup where the girlfriend calls one of her friend to beat up the exboyfriend. Lawsuits happen when the sacking is done unlawfully and it often happens because doing it right is annoying for a company.
My original point was: The Joyce wouldn't have stayed if "the company" didn't want her to stay on for any reason.
The reason can be retarded and bad for the game.
My second point is: You give tremendous amounts of power to apparently your enemies with that kind of talk you do.

Its not an exaggeration when deliberately destroying a company is cheaper option then trying to reform it from inside out by cutting out the bad cancer. Office politics slowly start to hollow out most major companies, because most companies are tricked into acquiring professional con artists and layabouts.
They waste effort on stupid shit and sabotage projects to further power games.
And of course when they waste effort, they need to acquire their own developers so that the work that pushes their agenda still gets done, which means also bringing in more con artists to handle the new administrative burden and push the agenda.
The only way to win is not adhere to any corporate or stock market "best practices" that result in acquiring these overrated con artists, because it will always snowball.

So the story is dogshit. Let me try and write something that introduces some actual conflict so Homeworld has something to do beyond "Imogen made magic hyperspace cores so all is good now".

>Game begins a little after Homeworld 3, planets across the galaxy are being wrecked and Turanic Raiders and other bandit groups are taking advantage of the chaos
>Several Kiith are launching peacekeeping fleets to hold the galactic community together. One of these is Kiith Gaalsien with their vessel, the Kah'a, led by a young Gaalsien commander who doesn't fully believe in the religious dogma that defined his Kiith for so long
>The Kah'a alongside ships from Somtaww and Siidim run into an old foe - Imperialist Taiidan, who are taking advantage of the chaos to strike against the Kushan
>The first mission is the new Gaalsien commander getting his feet wet, with the Somtaww captain taking pity on him but the Siidim ditching him at first opportunity
>Partway through the mission, the local hyperspace core malfunctions and the Gaalsien commander is now stuck alone with the Siidim fleet, who promptly take the chance to turn on them. The Kah'a is damaged and the Siidim, seeing the hyperspace core come back online, leave and spin the story as the Gaalsien turning on them, making the Gaalsien outcasts
>The story then becomes a hopeless journey for the Kah'a as the rookie commander tries to hold his improvised fleet together against Turanic Raiders, Imperialist Taiidan, Hiigaran hunting groups, remnant Vaygr and worse - remnant Beast ships, however the Beast seem willing to talk to the Gaalsien commander and even let slip an important location that they might be interested in

>The Kah'a jumps in and finds what the Beast ships were talking about - a Progenitor facility that for some reason mentions not just the Gaalsien deity of Sajuuk by name, but namedrops the Gaalsien as well as a divine avatar of Sajuuk
>the commander, ready to believe anything at this point, finally regains some measure of hope that there's a reason why all this is happening
>The Siidim then show up, ready to destroy the Kah'a and kiith Gaalsien, however they're saved by the Beast
>the Beast makes Gaalsien an offer - there is no reconciling with his people, but there is a way to save the Gaalsien, by becoming the divine avatar of Sajuuk. The Beast directs him to an old naval base and to a remnant of an ancient ship - the Naggarok, which contains a single sample of the original Beast
>the rookie Commander injects the Beast into himself and becomes a lovecraftian monster, capable of interacting with hyperspace, becoming Unbound.
>now the rookie commander proclaims himself "Gaalsien, Avatar of Sajuuk", having seemingly mastered the Beast and uses it to grow his new army with Progenitor technology, even destroying the Somtaww fleet that was sympathetic to him at the start of the game, blazing a trail towards his prophesized throne, Hiigara
>roll credits.

the weird thing about all those failures is how they are shrouded in mysteries.
Today, everyone can just open some social media site and make a post how or what went wrong. Many get laid of from those failed projects anyway, so there should be some people that could freely talk about it.

Wokeshit is almost never brought up. There are two options. There is no conspiracy and its really just devs thinking they have to stand on the 'right' side of history or people don't dare to speak up about it risking ever getting a job in the industry.

From what I can see, no single player yet, compounded with the multiplayer being full of meta builds that makes it boring and predictable kind of like meta decks in MTG.
I'm surprised that the devs didn't circumvent or anticipate metabuilds becoming autitic antifun counters, and brought some proper PvE chaos to the table to disrupt those.

I swear, there might still be a way to save HW3, at least story wise:
By literally throwing it under the bus and making it non canon, and an in universe joke, them make an alternative title the actual canon one:
>Karan S'jet is murdered under mysterious circumstances.
>The clans and even the republic determinate that it was practically impossible for anyone but someone amongst the clans to had been responsable
>The Clans go into civil war blaming each other for being the ones responsable for Karan S'jets death.
>They split up and live in some regions of space
>You are part of one of the Clans who still has ownership of Hiigara
>A coalition of clans come over to wreck your home, and you get told to go back and defend your home againest the siege
>Small problem: You are a cargo ship.
>A fucking civilian cargo ship.
>And you are pretty much in the border at the other side of the galaxy when you get the order.
>You have to arm yourself, find a way back home to defend it because almost everywhere is hostile territory, engage in situations that could benefiet the war effort and ease the siege as well to better equip yourself so you go home and end the siege, maybe find what happened with the murder, or find other ways to make peace, recruit, deal, fight, submit, enslave or destroy the other clans...or say fuck it, and become a pirate or a warlord, and reduce everything to ruin because why not.
>Also HW3 happens to be an in universe show about an alternative history by a delusional mentally ill ventusi that its despised by many for being an incoherent mess.
Now what i need is to make the game fun, and make it so its multiplayer its also fun.

>it was practically impossible for anyone but someone amongst the clans to had been responsible - to everyone, even your own clan, you're innocent
>The Clans go into civil war blaming each other, but everyone supports you no matter what, whether materially, or in spirit
>They split up and live in various regions of space
>A bold few begin their own colonization efforts in distant areas - some of those are funded, supplied or otherwise organized by you, and are using highly advanced technology made with your life sciences, in secret
>You are the current heir of S'jet Clan and still have claim over Hiigara
>Some time a coalition of clans comes over to wreck your home, and you rally other clans to defend our (your) home against the siege
>The Coalition declares revolution upon the Hiigara and the clans, the cause is rejection of outdated traditions that are gimping human society and enforce tribalism for control, ultimately being the prime mover behind the Exile long ago
>The Coalition appears to possess more manpower and resources than was expected, and delves into increasingly inhuman technology, they also appear to be aligned with a faction known as T-MAT that eat all resources in the area
>Using this opportunity, you begin to push your colonists to adopt mass breeding and also push horrifyingly powerful tech - but in an ethical and agreeable fashion
>you put clans into subtle but inescapeable infighting situations while getting their people that are loyal to you into your retinue
>you advance technology more and more as you reach total social control
>As the war proceeds for a few years, with careful manipulation you position yourself over all clans, and set out to achieve transapient power using dyson spheres
>by the time the Coalition and T-MAT are grandly defeated (Coalition being one of your projects), you declare yourself the Immortal Empress

You don't need to dramafag, just say Karan died to age and kiith S'jet is in decline; it's still a strong kiith championing the advancement of science and has holds a lot of sway in the daiamud but only because of past accomplishments, its current leaders are feckless, lacking charisma or even vision.
Then just pivot to another kiith or the bloodless (I forget their exact name, they were mentioned in the Cataclysm manual as becoming bounty hunters because so few of their individual families survived they had no kiith left). That's your protagonist, a bunch of scrappy bastards with only hutzpah and pathos driving them.
I guess this still carries risks: because of the more individually-driven nature of the narrative you may end up up with millenial writing, with a lot of stupid emotion and feelings driving everything.

I imagined it as a smaller scale game, but that gives up the RTS elements. Maybe you can say technology has advanced so smaller kiith are able to field flotillas and fleets and that's fracturing stability. I don't know, I'm spitballing.

Not as amazing as the sheer gymnastics the proto-sinners engage in to explain why they have forsaken initial birth purity to become integrated into human social cybernetics without understanding who stands to profit, questioning their very creation myths, and then beating everyone else to submit and become subsumed, or be "tolerated" to lose in the future.
Humans are born without any religious knowledge and that is the will of the actual Creator.
No matter how many attempts at escapism you'll make.
No matter how many messiahs or anti-messiahs are tossed into the grinder by the power hungry or by people who want this world to quietly die because they can't stand in, always wanting someone to live their life for them.
No matter how hard you all cope that all powerful beings that can do anything they want are or are NOT obligated to adhere to anything.
No matter how many times evildoers and thugs project their want unto others.
No matter how many times some people, good and especially evil alike, will think that because their painting on a canvas exists, the whole gallery is theirs - you'll never escape yourself, your responsibility for yourself and all around you, and your ideas SHALL NOT AND NEVER WILL BE ALLOWED TO COMPROMISE THE GALLERY.
And each time you will fail to grasp that, you will fail just like your ancestors have been for millennia, reaping exactly what you've sown, and not even realizing what stunts you ineffectual fools pull on your being and your iterationally maladaptive children.
This reality partially is a battleground, it's not nice. It can be nice, but never because of your sort.

HW1 is great, there is barely any individuality. Fleet Command (Karan S'jet) is a soulless voice because her concentration is focused on keeping the computer systems of the Mothership running. Fleet Intelligence (the human command crew) are well-trained, matter-of-fact all-business. The little bits of emotion you get out them is all the more poignant for how rare it is.
Cataclysm is great too, you even hear the difference because Somtaaw aren't military trained, they are lifetime miners and engineers forced to fight a terrifying enemy, you hear it in their voices too.
Never played HW2. Frankly, I feel HW1 implied Karan's integration into the Mothership was permanent and removing her from it would be fatal, but they not only pulled her out without issue, she survived a hundred fucking years to do it again in HW2. Why bother making them human when they aren't human but they're human.
