As the other anon says, Janice is basically a female version of Tony in a lot of her behavior. She's selfish, egotistical, miserable, vindictive, spiteful, fat, and manipulative. But, so is almost everyone else in the family that was raised by Livia and Johnny Boy. The exception being their third child Barbara who moved away and didn't suffer from the same insanity as the rest of her siblings and parents.
The differences between Tony and Janice, aside from surface level stuff like her being a former hippy, was that Janice was capable of change. Technically, everyone always is, but they have to *want* it. Tony didn't. The Sopranos is six seasons of Tony choosing not to become a better person because that would require him to change the behavior that he benefits from. Janice was actually made better by hooking up with Bobby (and by killing Richie as well, symbolically burying her past.)
He becomes their mother more than she did and he hates himself and her for it. That's why Tony sabotages her after she attends anger management and therapy, because she's bettering herself (something he sees himself as being incapable of). Just like he sabotages Christopher when he is attempting true sobriety.
