I think it's gotten worse in some ways and better in others. For example, every Nintendo home console before the Switch and every Nintendo handheld from the DSi to the New 3DS has been region-locked. The Switch isn't and I've been fully taking advantage of that. A lot of first-party games are being released with their Japanese text on cartridge so I don't even have to import. And generally speaking I'm not waiting 6 months to a year for a Japanese game to get released here anymore. The Switch is also free of the utter OS bloat of the Wii U and 3DS, and is exactly what I wanted of a Nintendo console. Don't get me wrong, I love the 3DS, it's a real beast, but there's just too much junk weighing it down. I don't care how much people romanticize it, I value practicality and function over presentation.
Nintendo has always been litigious. I personally don't have much of an opinion on it, they can do what they want with their IPs and I'll pirate if I want to. I just think all the people acting like it's their right to pirate and flaunt it are retards raised in an era of oversharing, like those Twitter retards who show off pictures of shit they stole from Walmart.
Everything around prices lately is annoying, and I do think it's a combination of Nintendo thinking they can get away with it and overvaluing themselves, rising dev costs (for everyone, which is why Sony and Microsoft are now releasing first-party games on other platforms), and tariff shit.
I also think Nintendo is an old conservative company from a fairly conservative island nation that's been historically isolated from western trends and often goes against them because of that NIHON DAMASHII. That's just a cultural thing and I frankly don't want them to kowtow to western values, hence why I play games in Japanese.
