First of all the rampant homosexuality that has "overflowed" modern culture wasn't present in the 90's. Faggots were made fun of at best in "good fun." They were not some sociopolitical issue of deep thought and contrition worth actually implying such feelings existed between the two male leads Cloud and Sephiroth, nor was there any reason to hammer home the uncertainty and weakness of character shown in Cloud's more modern portrayals. Instead, he was simply a bad ass mercenary with superhuman strength, a large sword, and magic powers. He talked and acted like a bad ass, he killed with impunity, and his only desire in regards to Sephiroth was murdering the mother fucker that killed the residents of his home town. In turn Sephiroth wasn't some weirdly fruity homosexual specter that popped up to "taunt," Cloud. He was John Carpenter's "The Thing," that happened to look like a man in trench coat when he wasn't a two story tall mutant abomination seeking to devour the soul of Earth. Basically, the post contextualized narrative surrounding this game is not what the original fans envision when they see and think about it. If you want an idea what the "original" vision for the series was in a higher quality format look up the OVA that came out shorty after the game's launch following Zach and Cloud's escape from Shinra. It's a Madhouse production and does a much better job of conveying the world and setting. Dirge of Cerberous, Advent Children, the weird OVA that came out after Advent Children, and the "Remakes," are for all intents and purposes a separate IP.
