Huge AWS outage brings down Roblox, Fortnite, EGS and more gaming services
>An enormous Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage is having a huge impact across the internet, and gaming has not escaped the damage.
>Games of all types, from Fortnite to Wordle to Roblox have been affected by the AWS outage and appear down for huge amounts of people today. Problems started at about 7.30am BST (that's 2.30am ET) when gamign services started having huge spikes on the outage-detecting website Downdetector.
>The root of the problems lie Amazon Web Services, but no specific cause is known yet: the Amazon Web Services dashboard just shows an "operational issue" in North Virginia. The AWS dashboard says "engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working on both mitigating the issue".
>Anyway, the effect of the outage has been massive and is ongoiung in the gaming world with storefronts, online games, and more being interrupted. Im here to bring you the latest as we try and understand what happenbed and hope that services come back online soon.

That's really the crux of it. Games affected by this outage are all games that are inherently bad. Bad in a way that they harm the overral industry and game development community. If anything, I celebrate this outage. Maybe these terminally online dopamine dripped gamers will check out their singleplayer game collections.

Multiplayer isn't inherently evil, tho. As long as it can be played without having to phone home to verify your digital rights.
LAN, Direct IP, split-screen, hot seat, all of them are good, fun, and DRM-free.
Hell, Jason Rohrer's catalogue is nothing but live-service games that are in the public domain, and thus anyone can set up servers without Rohrer being able to prevent it*.

You've got an appointment for [TIME] at [PLACE] so just be sure to be there on time with a valid ID and we'll do the rest in 10 min!" and if you need an appointment you literally just go online, pick a time and place and then be there, no fuss, no waiting in line and no hidden fees or cranky retards.

The same can be said for Swedish taxes where you just have to log-in to a government website when you get a letter and/or E-mail reminder that its time to check you taxes, look over what the state have already calculated for you so that there are no mistakes (if you want) and then you just press "I agree" and your done, for FREE and while only spending about 2-5 min of your life on it.

despite the memes, the feds generally can't pick through your webdata at their own discretion. They have to go to the courts and request a warrant that they then serve to the owners of that data aggregation. Of course, the NSA has been caught using backdoor strongarming and proxy agents to muscle their way in without public court orders, but that is (supposed to be) illegal and therefore could easily be shut down by any politician with a pair of balls. If the infrastructure was nationalised it would also become much more common and complete because they'd no longer have to bully a middleman into handing it over, because they'd have direct access to everything and the legal right to pick through it with a fine-toothed comb, and would be much harder to put an end to because of it.

The scaling is in reverse, it costs a lot to get 1000 people monthly but each additional people cost less per people. A curved line that flattens at the end. Some Silicon Valley tech startup could have gotten a couple racks of servers and dedicated climatization in a room in their house and serve millions of people per week. The problems are the spikes, 24/7 uptime and mainly attacks from China and Russia or whoever which makes everyone pass their data to the glowies at Cloudflare.

I'd rather guests be scraping than a bunch of fake user-accounts though, so it was either keep the forums open to all, or suffer more bots trying to pretend they're humans by necroing old as fuck threads with information they only seem to gleam by the first reply of the current page of the thread. This is simplifying the issue. us-east-1 from AWS is the oldest service, A LOT of Amazon and third party services rely on it because it was the first to be avaliable. You don't even need to be using it directly, if anywhere during the pipeline of services you're using is on or itself relies on a service using it (recurring), you have an outage.

us-east-1 is a technological bottleneck.
