Played them for the first time a week ago, they are both dated and could use a remaster with better controllers, people nowadays can't handle tank controllers so a lazy port wouldn't do them any favors
The second one is too grindy if you want to max all the weapons or beat it on S-class
not to mention the nonsensical way some weapons are found, having to check a dumpster or a bureau of some random npc is guaranteed to make people angry

I feel they both hold up like fine wine.
They're both super fun adventures which no modern indie game has been able to capture the same still.
The graphics look great today whether you upscale or native resolution.
People will whine about controls but that's how it was back then. It's part of the charm but modern gamers are massive babies.

Fun fact: the voice actor for Tiesel Bonne was caught with hardcore real CSAM, sentenced, went to jail, served his time, got released, and was almost immediately found with CSAM again, was given a court date, and drowned himself in a lake to avoid returning to prison.

I like them. Wish we got a collection or some indie game that tried to do the same thing, out of all games to copy it's almost weird Capcom has never bothered to do something with it outside of some easy ports and nobody has tried to do the Legends formula again when it's such a beloved cult classic.

I just played them again for the first time in a while just a few months ago, and yes. There's obviously some clunk and jank because they're PS1 games from a time when devs were still figuring out how to do 3D adventure games, but if you're not a dipshit zoomer and you don't have ADHD and can adjust to the dated controls, they're great.

it's probably some safe word faggotry they learned from a youtube video where they spell "r*pe" like that and censor its pronunciation too god i hate those faggots. when did tumblr become mainstream
Anonymous No.723726876 [Report]
I do agree that 1>2, but I don't think 2 is particularly bad, just not as good. Being able to travel to different biomes instead of being locked to one island was a cool change. I feel like they leaned a little more into RPG territory with stuff like dungeon upgrades where you could run a specific dungeon as a test and if you passed you'd be able to enter higher level dungeons, but it would jack up the "level" of all the game's enemies including bosses. And there was stuff like status effects, which was kind of cool but could be really annoying when you were deep into a dungeon.

The end was a little ridiculous, and the final boss is pretty cancer if you haven't utterly mastered the clunky controls. I'd probably give the first game an 8/10 and the second game a 7/10.

That's not at all true. This might be controversial and I hate to say it as a big MML fan, but OOT is the better game. Easily. OoT's levels of polish are outlandish. Nintendo put its full weight behind it, when MML just had a small dedicated team and a much shorter adventure. Even OoT's controls are much tighter, with very sensitive tilt control on the thumbstick. Whereas Megaman hits a full blast run with no variable speed until 2.

Coming as a huge OOT fag, I agree with you. MML's controls and movement are great, and only made better with 2. 1's world was also well done - the interconnectedness of the island for one and the city itself felt more alive than most in 5th gen.

I always felt that Tomb Raider was a million times more clunky in terms of controls, but yeah it's still a great game. My post wasn't to devalue it, or OOT - rather Legends is in the same league of quality as those games for what it does. I find the "MML is bad" memers never have any real arguments, especially compared to what was the norm in 6th gen.

But at this point, is there anything MAME can't handle?
Anonymous No.723735758 [Report]
All they need is better controls. 1 literally pre-dates twin stick controllers altogether. People don't remember how rough that era was, like using the C buttons on the N64 controller as a bastard right stick in Jet Force Gemini.

Legends was revolutionary in a lot of ways, and its leaning into style and soul over trendy gimmicks lets it hold its own even today.

>OoT's levels of polish are outlandish
OOT's controls might be "tighter" but Link feels extremely restrictive. Rock can roll, jump and strafe way more easily than link. He can also interact with the world way more in how he can scale and jump around the city. Certainly the analogue controls help OOT a lot, I will admit.

OIOT is polished sure, but in some ways it's overpolished. The combat is even more braindead than Legends is, for example - which was apparently nerfed mid development
Anonymous No.723736505 [Report]
>>723735904
Yeah. OoT's combat is too easy. But I fault them not having confidence in players skills more than "too much polish." They rarely expect you to focus on multiple enemies at a single time, and in many cases said enemies wait their turn. It is the thing I'd change, if anything. But the levels of detail, the many many interactions in OoT, like, say with different items add a depth not seen in MML. Very few equippables do anything outside of variable amounts of damage to enemies. But Link's items are game-changers.

I'm not really faulting MML for any of this, it didn't have the full force of Nintendo behind it (or even Capcom for that matter). They did really well for what they had though.

Fuckin no? The civilization on Earth in Legends is a petri dish/environment monitoring project established to rehabilitate the planet into habitability after the previous several thousand years of nonstop war fucked everything. The Master had second thoughts about living an ideal but pointless life and uplifted the Decoys (the actual name of the Carbons in Japanese) into real people and then ordered his right hand man to tear the system overseeing it all down so Earth could return to something like a natural existence. Barrell even says "we didn't evolve, we were created. one day, boom, there we were, with a language and culture provided for us". All the references to prior Megaman eras are obfuscated historical records that were drawn from to create the fake culture the Decoys were provided. That's why you find manga of Iceman and a "comic book character" poster of Black Zero in Yosyonke, plus the Classic cartoon on TV and a magazine with Calinka on the cover.

I also very recently replayed them and I noticed this a lot. Legends 1 does the Metroidvania/Dark Souls thing of having one massive map that you gradually interconnect, which makes the tangental side dungeons part of the larger setting and a useful and lore-involved utility as you discover the entire island is a single free-standing megastructure. Legends 2 is more disconnected but each major dungeon has its own very different personality because they are distantly separated facilities. Legends 2's side dungeons felt very much like afterthoughts compared to 1's.

They're pretty fun games, 1s location is really comfy and really interconnected. Misadventures of Tron Bonne has some fun variety. I really like the RPG level where you interact with all those diggers. 2 is imo worse in atmosphere because of how disjointed everything feels but the gameplay is better and it's still a good game. Each game has at least one though generally more bangers.

So you're mad because the gameplay doesn't look fun in a game you watched? Is this what zoomers do? It has to "look fun" because you don't play games you watch someone else play them?
I'm going to assume you can't play older games because they are too "clunky". Try actually playing the game, it's not a difficult game and you can even remap the controls with emulators nowadays if it bothers you that much. The only way I can see that you can't work with such basic controls is you are using the touchscreen of your phone as the controls.

You shoot enemies and have special weapons, just like mega man but in 3d. Just like any other shooter you strafe enemies and try to stay out of their fire / melee. Unless you're just unfamiliar with how games used to be it's a pretty universal concept.

Do you not like it because it's not OOT or modern slop? I'm genuinely curious to hear what you have to say.

In general the N64 is a downgrade in literally every aesthetic department with the exception of it might be easier on the eyes with the reduction of polygons and smoothing (removal) of detail. Worse music, Game feels worse because N64 is a lag machine, Removal of a ton of voice acting because lolcartridges.
Honestly it's a fucking miracle they managed to port the game at all.

Play the PS1 version. N64 version is a lazy port that runs like ass. The blurry textures also don't fit the artstyle. Its only advantage is the faster loading and saving.
Anonymous No.723753084 [Report]

Audio is worse on N64 cause the game had to be compressed to fit on cartridge, especially all the voice acting. They also had to make cuts so no music samples to listen to in the Electronics store and no end credits music.
N64 does have faster load times, but experiences more slowdown in actual gameplay and has more fog.

Its much better to just play it on PS1, its what the game was designed for.

The actual story dungeons scared the crap out of me as a kid, and I just really like the design of the Reaver Bots.
2 was good, though I do miss the sprawling dungeon design of the first game. Both are fantastic games with really intriguing, surreal atmospheres. There's nothing else like them (and if there is, for the love of god, tell me. I'm so sad we'll never see a sequel).

One thing that I prefer from 2 over 1 is the boss design/behavior logic. 98% of the enemies in MML1 can be cheesed by circle strafing (including the final boss). MML2 fixes this issue with either better targeting (aiming where you're going instead of where you are) or better designed attacks.

Firefly really does feel like a more cynical, Westernized version of Legends. The whole shipboard family off on adventure raiding and discovering secrets with a whole lot of really big personalities in the cast.

Firefly was ahead of its time and it died for it. Sort of feels the same as Legends. I'm not usually into sci-fi but both series hooked me.

I'd struggle to call what Axl got a 'fair chance'. Poor boy was made by the same company that produced Dante, but came out looking like Bubsy 3D with a gun.

I still think that if we ever get a new game, it should start out with Trigger's rampage inside Elysium. It would be a good way to show off the controls while making the player feel powerful.

Legends weren't "good" games, Nearly everything Megaman in this era were quite bad. Nostalgia goggles aside people are forgetting that the Megaman was just not doing any hits.

The upside of the Legends game is that it did have very memorable characters and story was alright.

I literally just told you in that same post there are different kinds. But the thing they all have in common is they are vulnerable people and easily misguided.
