His greatest power isn't physical might (although he's mighty) but spiritual, which is more subtle. Consider for instance when he told The Witch King couldn't enter Minas Tirith. And so The Witch King couldn't. Which is a more direct exercise of power than treading the needle in winning War of the Ring, which he however did also.

I'm re-reading LotR currently
>Frodo
Decided to take the ring to Mordor. Made the right call to carry on alone (with Sam) when the fellowship had to split.
>Sam
Supported Frodo with the best of his abilities. Saved Frodo and carried him to the finish line.
>Pippin
He's the sole reason him and Merri survived the orcs and the Rohirrim (freed his hands, fooled the Mordor orc with the ring bait, cut their bindings).

Still got to read forwards, I always forget what Merri and Pippin did after they separated.

"The Necromancer" isn't used in it's modern meaning, in The Hobbit it refers to the shade of Suaron which I believe isn't referred to by name at all. The Necromancer in this context just means like, dark sorcerer as far as I can tell, he doesn't actually do any raising of the dead.

Because it would straight up corrupt him. Galadriel literally told Frodo if he had given her the ring, instead of a dark lord you would have a dark queen who would be more terrible than Sauron himself. He gave it to Frodo because 1. sauron would never suspect a half-ling to ever have the most powerful object ever and 2. because hobbits are harder to corrupt (not impossible see gollum). Frodo by book three was literally deteriorating as he got closer to mount doom as the ring grew heavier on him

It's because Hobbits are resistant to magic, just like the Dwarves.
Except Hobbits are more humble so they won't be as tempted to use it all willy nilly.
It's like that one suggestion of tying the ring to a small creature and just carrying that, that's basically what Frodo is.

People often don't know that the ring isn't something that makes you invisible. When you put on the ring it makes you into something that you want. Frodo and bilbo wanted to be invisible because they wanted to get away therefore it gave them invisibility. Sam when fighting shelob became beastly as he wanted courage to defeat it.

The wrong corrupts the bearer. Hobbits are just dumb manlets that like to farm and quabble amongst themselves, totally oblivious to everything else in the world. Literally no one thinks anything about them at all. They'd probably be kept as slaves or in a zoo or treated like African pygmies (which is kind of what Saruman does when he decides he likes their pipe weed). They're difficult to notice and care about nothing important, which makes them the perfect Ring bearer and difficult to corrupt with promises of power.

>inb4 Eagles
The Eagles are as much plain old eagles as Shelob is a dumb spider. They're basically lower rank angelic beings sent to watch over Middle Earth, intelligent, and definitely also not something you want corrupted.

Sam didn't wear the ring when he was fighting Shelob, he had the phial of galadriel.

The invisibility likely has nothing to do with what the claimer of the ring desires, as Sam also turned invisible when he wore it.

>In Chapter 2 of The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf explains that the Ring pulls mortal wearers into the "wraith-world". He cautions Frodo about the Ring's power to corrupt, explaining that a mortal who "often uses the Ring to make himself invisible... fades... and walks in the twilight under the eye of the Dark Power that rules the Rings". This shows that invisibility is a side effect of a more dangerous spiritual transformation, which is how the Nazgûl came to be.

The Ring pulls you the spiritual realm when you wear it. If you're a spiritual creature like a Maiar or an elf, you don't feel much difference, but for regular humans or hobbits who don't have much magical attribute (at least naturally), it basically brings your entire spirit to the other side where you shine like a beacon for all to see (which is helpful for Sauron and the Nazgul)

Sauron is a Maiar, like Gandalf and the Balrogs. You can consider them to be high tier spiritual beings like "angel" or "demon".
The Valar are the pantheon of "Gods" that sit below the One God, Eru.
Sauron, like the Balrogs, were Maiar servants of Morgoth, a Valar. Sauron was just a better more clever being than the others.
After a long time of Morgoth fucking things up, the rest of the Valar threw down the gauntlets and wages war to defeat him, called the War of Wrath which was so terrible that the very land it was fought on no longer exists.
Sauron eventually rose to power over millennia - and when we mean power, it's not "I cast bigger fireball", it's alliances, nation building/destroying, treachery, etc.
Fearing a devastation like the War of Wrath, the Valar do not intervene directly (they could probably crush him easily enough) and choose instead to fight him through influence.
They sent five Maiar, strip them of most of their power, and tell them they cannot intervene directly.
Rather than thinking of powerful beings or grand battles you should think of the War of the Ring as a battle or influence over the world. Sauron did not go out and crush armies with his magic fists - he worked machinations upon the peoples of Middle Earth. The Wizards were sent to do the same - to galvanize and guide the peoples to resist his influence. It's a theoretical good vs. evil, not one being ba another.
Having the Valar come down and smite Sauron would be like bringing a nuke to a stick fight.

The appendices that came with the special editions are very enlightening on this front. Essentially they had pitched the series as two films, because they thought that was all they would ever get, but some (absolutely fucking GOATed) exec told them to stop being stupid and he'd only make it if it was three movies since that was what the story obviously needed. As a result, Fellowship was mostly written but they were kinda flying by the seat of their pants as the trilogy went on, writing and re-writing scenes the night before filming them. There's a reason that there's so much unused footage from the films that didn't make it to the extended cuts: they basically had no finished form until they were out the door, again except for Fellowship. This is also why the "Arwen is dying!" plot appears in TT and then vanishes in the next film. Honestly watching how haphazard and grueling the production was it's a miracle that TT and ROTK are decent films, let alone "good but not as good as Fellowship."

He's one of the world-creator (demi)gods of Finnish mythology, specifically the one who created all magic in the form of songs, and one of the main characters of Kalevala (an adapted compendium of ancient oral tradition myths, written in the 1800s. "Adapted" in the sense that it's about as accurate in places as Mormonism is to Christianity)
That painting is of a scene in Kalevala, where they defend Sampo (the golden magic mill in the bottom right corner, which can conjure grain and riches) after first crafting it for the witch of the north, and then promptly stealing it from her.

Also, his job description is clear, he is to guide mortals in their fight, that´s why he looks like an old man, because if he looked like an angel mortals would freak out, fear him and eventually turn on him. Few hobbits were cut out for adventure, and while Merry and Pippin were also up for it and Sam was willing to go wherever Frodo went, Frodo was the best shot they had.

He never imagined for even a moment that his enemies were actually trying to destroy him. One of the best parts of the entire book is when Frodo puts on the Ring and describes Sauron's realization about what's happening, he basically shits his fucking pants.
>And far away, as Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own, even in Sammath Naur the very heart of his realm, the Power in Barad-dûr was shaken, and the Tower trembled from its foundations to its proud and bitter crown. The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which his doom now hung.

Because of palantir fuckery he thought Sauron-man took it from Pippin, and then Aragorn took it from Sauron-man when Isengard was sacked.

He was convinced the only reason Aragorn would show up at his front gate like a pig to slaughter was that the ring had swayed him to do something extremely retarded, but he sent his forces out to be sure of victory in case he or Gandalf did master some of the rings powers.

The Nazgul are the main antagonists for the first half of Fellowship. They wanted to keep the tension building, and I think cutting away to an indirect fight of Gandalf and the Nazgul would have damaged that. The movie also implies that Gandalf was still at Orthanc during the trek from Bree to Rivendell.
It certainly would have been cool, but it didn't work for the pacing of the movie.

That's because every time the Valar met the forces of evil with power it caused far worse damage to the world.

>War of the Powers
>The Valar first came to Middle-earth on Y.T. 1090. The titanic conflict between the Valar and Melkor now began in earnest, with the hosts of the West confronting the hosts of Melkor in the North-west of Middle-earth, and all that region was broken by this engagement. But the first victory of the hosts of the West was swift, and the servants of Melkor fled before them to Utumno. Then the Valar passed over Middle-earth, and over the next two years, they set a guard about Cuiviénen to protect the Elves from battle. There the young Elves only felt the shaking of the Earth, and saw the north alight by mighty fires. Thus the Valar began the siege of Utumno, long and grievous it was and many battles were fought before its gates of which all is but a rumour to the Elves.

>After seven years of the Trees, the gates of Utumno were broken and its halls unroofed, and Melkor took refuge in the uttermost pit. The last of his servants were host of Balrogs, who as a tide of flame assailed the standard of Manwë. The wind of his wrath withered their fire, and he slew them with the lightning of his sword. Melkor stood at last alone.

>From the ruin great clouds arose and hid the stars. It was during this time that the contour of Middle Earth was changed, with the Great Sea being widened.

>War of Wrath aftermath
>The world had changed greatly, for the fury of both sides in the war had wreaked havoc on much of the land. The northern areas were torn asunder, rivers formed or destroyed, mountains and hills changed. The wreckage of the war was immense; most of the land west of the Ered Luin sank beneath the waves, and Beleriand was destroyed. The sea broke through the Ered Luin and formed the Gulf of Lhûn.

I recently read a really good discussion on all Saruman's tactical failings in his attack on Helm's Deep, basically pointing out all the ridiculous military blunders he made along with why he made them- and also how the author believed that to be the point of the text, because the Witch King (a legendary Commander) didn't make any of those mistakes. Great read, fun times.

However, a part of his argument was that even if Saruman had gotten the ring, it wouldn't have done anything for him. I've seen a few people say this, that all the ring offers is lies. And look, probably Sam couldn't have put on the ring and taken on Sauron, that's fine.

But literally every wise character, Gandalf, Galadriel and Saruman believe that the ring will let them do whatever they want to do. Yeah, obviously Sauron was defeated and he sent an army to kill Aragorn, thinking he had the ring, which shows he also believes that someone else with the ring could be defeated too. However, it's specifically pointed out that he believed Aragorn to be a new wielder of it, and that he would kill him before he could master it.

Sauruman is a maiar, he's equal to Sauron (more or less), if he had the ring and a chance to master it, there's no reason to think he wouldn't be almost unstoppable. The Witch King would take Mordor's host against him, but it seems almost guaranteed to me that with the ring's power Saruman could force the Witch King and the Mordor forces to serve him instead.

He could fix everything wrong in the world, he could make it all better he could... It took a great deal of effort for him to resist the ring.

Same as Galadriel, because in resisting it, she accepts that she'll lose her Kingdom and her pride, no longer will be become the Queen of the Elves, she'll return to just being another Elf. She finally passes her test of vanity and allows herself to be humbled, accepting her return to Valla.

it turns mortal "invisible" as a side effect of allowing mortals to enter the spirit realm. For already powerful beings like Sauron or Tom Bombadil it doesn't make them invisible because they can already effect the spirit realm so it's like a buff.

To use an analogy, it's like the hobbits found a fighter jet armed with nuclear bombs, but they don't know how to pilot it or make it take off or make it fire so as far as they understand it it's just a car that moves kind of fast on the ground.

Sauron can be destroyed, bodily, and has been many times. He is a Maiar. He doesn't die.
The Ring is his backup plan. You might take the Ring, kill Sauron, and rule for a long while, but Sauron will never fail to exist, and the Ring will always seek to return to him and restore him to greater power. That's why destroying the Ring leaves Sauron only a powerless spirit of malice.

So an Elf with 200 years of combat experience is just as strong as a lv1 Warrior. So now Elves are always caricaturised as arrogant, but without any feats to actually back that up. Meanwhile, in LotR Legolas could do shit that nobody else could and it was just normal.

They did, Gondor colonised Mordor for hundreds (thousands?) of years.

The point is that their power has waned. The Numenorians are no more, the throne of Ilildur is broken, the two great cities are divided. And so, one by one, the fortresses fell.

Look at stuff like Minas Ithil (Tower of the Moon), it's now Minas Morgul (tower of Sorcery). Look at the Dunedain, reduced to barrow wights (although they got their revenge).

The important thing for me isn't just that they made the movies, it's that they had so much goddamn care for the source and the story to go

>Look, we're gonna need to make some changes and chop some things out for a theatrical release, it won't fit and space for action because this is a movie for a wide audience
>But book fans are still going to want those scenes, and they should be part of the story
>So, while we're all here, all in character and costume and with these sets built, let's film them anyway while KNOWING they'll all be cut
>We'll put them out as DvD Extended Editions for fans

And he was 100% correct, the theatrical cut couldn't be 4hrs long, but goddamn the EE help a lot if you're a LotR fan enough to actually care about the details. Sucks that no other series can get an adaption by someone who cares enough to do that. Sucks that even LotR can't get that kind'a adaption these days. Rings of Power rips off fucking Dragon Age.

The animation was complete dogshit outside of fight scenes. That's how all modern animation is, everything is a powerpoint presentation except the fight scenes so the studios can plaster that on youtube and their paid shills can gush over how fluid it is.

It's a fact that all consciousness is derived from Eru. He imparted it on 4 races, Ainur, Elves, Humans, plus Dwarves as an unplanned bonus.

However, the story is full of offshoots of other clearly sapient beings. As they could not have gotten that way without God, how are they all related? Some, like hobbits and orcs, are elaborated, but there's a lot of shit.

My theory is that a lot are merely minor ainur, inhabiting physical forms until they forget what they once were. Ents, talking animals, vampires, werewolves, etc. Ungoliant for sure was some fucked up void corrupted ainur like Morgoth, just embodied in a giant fuck off spider. She probably refused to play in the song rather than change the notes.

Elrond basically considers it Frodo's destiny. The ring's fate is already entwined with his, he's shown an ability to hold it and a responsibility to treat it as an important task. He was fully within his rights to refuse, but it was one of those "We believe you're the one that needs to do this." things.

The more interesting thing to me is that neither Frodo nor Sam believed that they could win, they didn't at all think that their quest was possible. There's a part in the books where Sam points out to Frodo that they're eating their rations too freely, they won't have enough for the journey home- Frodo laughs and says "Do you really think that's gonna be an issue?" Sam kind'a backs down and agrees, "No, probably not."

They both fully understand that this mission is an impossible quest, that they'll get caught, they'll have the ring taken from them and they'll suffer unimaginable pain and torture before they die. And yet, they just do it anyway, without stopping or wavering, without turning back or turning aside, because it needs to be done.

A lot of people write Frodo off in favour of Sam, but I love how "Stiff upper lip" he was about it. Sam would have gone home if it was an option, if Frodo was okay with it. Frodo's the one that left them no option but to go forwards.

A big theme is that evil loses its ability to understand good. The characters, or characters who are on their way to becoming evil begin to interpret everyone's actions through their own lens.
The gossipy Hobbits of the Shire constantly talk about Biblo hoarding wealth like some tiny dragon.
Denethor, who isn't evil, but his despair is leading him in that direction, interprets many of Gandalf's and Faramir's actions as a mean to remove him from the throne.
The orcs all fear the torture they will be exposed to if they are captured.
Saruman views all of Gandalf's faithful duty to his charge as a secret mean to ingratiate himself with the world and seize power.
Sauron can no longer even conceive of the idea that someone would willingly try to destroy the ring instead of taking its power. He is accidentally correct, too. No one could have made the choice to destroy the ring at Orodruin. Except maybe Old Tom Bombadil.

Ungoliant is actually some kind of crazy-ass void entity thing, its unclear if her origin was even in Eru's music. There are also those creatures that "gnaw at the roots of the Earth, that Sauron knows not of, for they are older than he". LOTR has some really weird shit around the edges of its cosmology that I'm pretty sure was intentionally left vague.

There wasn't anything in the void when Morgoth went on his field trip, everything that exists exists in the setting through God. Arda was created in a song that would have included the weird creatures in the basement.

I could accept that Ungoliant and the void monsters aren't sapient, and are more like just forces of entropy without free will.

It does build character though. If doing the virtuous thing was easy and rewarded, how could you ever sift from those who are virtuous simply because it's the simplest, best thing to be? The real test of virtue and morality is being put into situations where being those things will cost you or damage you.
