I think this is Matsuno's greatest story. In Tactics Ogre, there is that massacre that must be done to galvanize the Walister and which is ordered by the Duke. The player can decide whether they will follow their lord's orders or not, but the deed will be done with or without their consent. I think that decision (doing the psyop or not) for me makes the game less desirable because I cannot make a fair judgement of Denan's character like I can do to Ramza. Moreover, Tactics: Ogre has you being much more powerful and influent than in FFT, where you are just an errant while the world crumbles and collapses around you and you desperately try to save what you can while the fires of war and poverty spread.

In a way, FFT's story falls backwards into being great.
It starts out as this great political shenigans, but devolves into demons. But the upside is that because it devolves into demons, the story is basically held up by and builds up the twin pillars of Ramza and Delita, who are fantastic, larger-than-life characters with thematic resonance.
