>Well made game by pretty much any sensible metric
>Still find it boring and completely unremarkable in most aspects
Anyone else feel this way about this game? I just have no idea why this game exists in the first place.

just because its not "offensively flawed" that doesnt mean its well made
it has by far the most boring ass fucking normal levels with braindead enemies. it had a great start in High Wall where it genuinely seemed like a great dark souls game focused on greater action but then it completely falls off a cliff for the next 20 hours, only briefly getting good again in a few select places like the consumed garden
replaying it in particular is a PITA

people ultimately only like the PVE so much because of like 4 lategame bosses that are universally countered by rolling forward (and very occasionally sideways whenever they do anything), that and friede. and then they pretend to ignore the entire first half that is filled with horrible or meme bosses
Anonymous No.723742174 [Report] >>723749752
You're probably put off from the one dimensional roll again and again...and again and again gameplay when Demons Souls and DS2 SotFS were much more about using your brain and having to think like an adventurer to overcome obstacles and deadly challenges instead of just pressing the roll button at the right time.

I guess maybe stat-wise most of the DLC bosses are above the base game. Friede can kill you very quick and has 3 health bars, Demon Prince has 21k HP all up and I think has some one-shot attacks, and Midir and Gael have 15k and also shit out damage.

You need to stay in front of him and it becomes a good fight with well telegraphed moves, only attack the head and run for the fire move. For all DS3's faults, those DLC bosses are among the most satisfying in the Souls games.

I've been playing through it to attempt to get all achievement in all the Dark Souls games and I don't know if I'm going to be able to stomach the grind. I'm not even half way done with my first playthrough and the game's combat is already getting repetitive. I think the most standout thing for me isn't just that every scenario boils down to roll and R1 spam but also the fact that all the fucking areas in the game blend together. There are so many straight hallways and areas that are just grey and black blobs of textures and environments that it's hard to actually remember anything in the game beyond certain set pieces. Maybe this shit is going to get better in the late game but everything about this game just feels like a fucking slog. Like I'm playing a game that wants to be Bloodborne 2 but is forced to be Dark Souls 3.

Midir is IMO the best dragon fight I've played in these games, better than any in ER (I haven't fought Kalameet or Sinh).
Hismar from Khazan almost took his spot (I still think he's more engaging moveset wise) but they fucked up the one part that makes Midir good to fight so I have to put him below.

The individual level design is mostly good (Cathedral of the Deep is one of From's best levels), but this game is just so repetitive and feels like a weird bastardization of Dark Souls and Bloodborne that fails at recapturing the appeal of either. Lorewise, the game ruins and or contradicts a lot of previously established stuff. At least DaS2 was smart to mostly be self contained with its lore stuff. Not a bad game, but it seems like it only exists out of contractual obligation than it being something that From actually wanted to make.

>>723749265
It helps if you think of it as a mix of demons souls and bloodborne, idk that kinda helped me. It’s definitely got a bit of identity crisis, but it’s worth playing if you like ds1 lore, because it’s essentially a more direct sequel and ending to the universe. It’s flawed but I think it’s a good game, feels a bit like fromsoft ‘best hits’ at times. Maybe you need a break from souls games if you’ve been playing them one after another

It's because Dark Souls III's design is extremely safe. They didn't innovate in mechanics or story, they didn't try to insert a twist, nothing. It's like they were too scared to fail so they took the easy path.
Amazing how Elden Ring is the next souls game they made with how brave its design was. They weren't scared of upsetting their playerbase and got rewarded by it.

It's because it tried too hard to be what ds1 was on launch while failing to understand why people loved ds1. So you're left with something that just feels fake. It has everything you should like but you don't so it just kinda exists.

Its just incoherent. I think they had greater ambitions but it was just all scrapped and turned into what feels like a tech demo. Its essentially Elden Ring without viable blocking or skills and an awful map.
But the bosses and the duels might be the best in the series, which is very valuable to a lot of people.

Originally, the whole game was supposed to look like the Ashen wasteland and you'd have to make your own bonfires. But they just scrapped everything new, imported a bunch of old assets in, and called it a day.

Sure...
>I also want to say before I start talking at length about why I found Dark Souls 2 disappointing, that it's still a pretty good game. I'm being totally genuine when I say I would much rather Play Dark Souls 2 than most games than most games that have release in the past few years, but I also can't seem to overcome this feeling of disappointment. With all that said, let's start at the beginning. The first major problem with Dark Souls 2 happens less than a minute into the introduction. ...
I wouldn't exactly call that a glowing endorsement, given the dogshit coming out in 2014, but it is worth admitting Dark Souls 2 does have some positives. Again though, encounter design is not one of them.

It doesn't save it entirely but it helps the game end on a positive note, makes it all the more questionable why ER's bosses are such a step down.

It's a dreary and gray slogfest through dark cathedrals and swamps. The entire experience is unfun from beginning to end.

But I love how the literal theme of the game "you need to let things die and not cling to them forever" and then hammering it into your head again in the DLC. Based Miyazaki

I just think people have their own specific taste when it comes to vidya gaems. A tighter focus on level design like in Demon's, Dark 1 or 2, have bosses become much more involved and less gimmicky like in 3 or Elden Ring, or the speed of the game like slow as fuck Dark Souls 1 or fast like in Boodborne

DS3 is the game that ruined the franchise but many people don't realize it. DS3 was the game that sped up all the enemies and just buffed the dodge roll to compensate. It's the true origin of "rollslop".
DS3 is the point where they should have overhauled the mechanics a little but instead they doubled down and committed to remaking the same game over and over. That's why ER is so similar to DS3.
Anonymous No.723753861 [Report]

Yeah, it was the crucial moment for the souls formula where they decided to completely give up on Slow, Heavy and Deliberate in favor of Gotta Roll Fast. Bloodborne had already sped things up but it wasn't locked in for the genre yet.

Because it is boring and unremarkable. It doesn't have a particularly cool, unique, or good art direction that sticks in your memory the way Bloodborne does. The combat is more action-oriented than DS1 or 2 but there's no added depth, you're still using dodge roll to avoid everything and there's barely ever any reason to press anything other than light attack. Level design is at its worse with the most linear, least interesting, least memorable levels in the series. It introduced weapon arts but there aren't that many of them and most of them suck. Everything feels made with balance in mind so nothing really feels unique or special no matter how you build your character. It's just a forgettable game. It plays well enough but no real reason to ever go back to it especially when ER and BB mog it so hard in terms of combat.

Friede in particular I think is difficult because now that I have the benefit of having played through Elden Ring it is incredibly obvious that Friede was designed along many of the same guidelines as Elden Ring's bosses, from multiple phases to having fucking long, status-inflicting attack strings and "gotcha" attacks like the scythe pull-forward in phase 3

She's very much the hardest of the DLC bosses because of this philosophy

Take your pick, my guy.
Enemy placement that seems random and often fails to relate to the environment. Enemies that attack you while you're resting at a bonfire. Fewer unique enemy encounters. Repeated fights that are just groups of enemies that all aggro together. Over-reliance on fights that are large guy with a sword. Essentially removed all opportunities for plunging attacks.
If you want to speak to broader world design, it doesn't get better.
Ilogical and often ugly level transitions. Arbitrary arenas (like the stairs that lead up to a drop in Drangleic castle). Poor sense of geometric consistency. Punishing lack of rewards for using costly navigation items. Almost non-existent interconnectivity beyond Majula and Lost Bastile. Sabotaged lighting. Effectively removed Sin. Shortcuts that achieve nothing. Illogical world interactions (burning the iron rod in Earthen Peak to empty a room of poison is a good example). Level design and set dec with all the verisimilitude of a Super Mario 64 course.
And of course, who could forget, kill god to bypass a 4 foot pile of rocks.
