SillyTavern is just a User Interface (UI). It doesn't run the actual LLM (Large Language Model). In order for text generation to work, you need to both a UI and an LLM.

SillyTavern is free and when you install it there is a button in the top bar shaped like a plug called "Connections." That's where you plug in the LLM.

Sounds like you're running into a context problem. Check the settings in whatever you're using for the "maximum context tokens" or similar, that's basically the size of the AI's memory.

A good way to keep it going is when you're getting close to the limit, tell the AI to summarize everything so far. Then it will have that condensed version in memory even as it loses older tokens.

They are simply algorithms trained on lots of data. LLMs outputs the next statically likely token, Image denoisers denoise noise until it stabilizes. Online you can get Google Gemini for free, but you have to have a Google Account and sign up for it. It's supposed to be censored but you can get around the censorship with clever prompting.

There might be other free options if you look around, but usually they're limited tokens. The OpenRouter $10 is the best I've found since you can make unlimited free calls to a bunch of models, so although you do have to put $10 in you never actually spend it unless you go for the more expensive paid models.

Otherwise if you have a decent GPU you could get a local model from HuggingFace and run it yourself, which would be free except for electricity costs.

Currently the major online options available are all similar for ERP purposes - Grok, Gemini, Deepseek, etc. The paid models are better than the unpaid ones, so Sonnet and paid versions of the others are the best you're going to get.

For local, it's still finding the biggest model you can run locally and trying the different merges/mixes until you find one you like. There's a lot more variety of writing styles in these local models, but since they're so much smaller than the big corporate models they tend to feel less intelligent too.
