Why did Avowed underperform in a gaming landscape hungry for fresh singleplayer fantasy RPG experiences?

It's a boring setting with shitty mechanics. Even Pillars of Eternity gets some praise from some people because it still plays like a decent CRPG even though it's the same boring setting.

Avowed has the best combat out of all of these games ( I haven't played KC2 yet but if the combat isn't much better than KC1 it still loses to Avowed)
The reason it flopped is totally unrelated to the actual gameplay or story or writing. I don't think it was marketed well at all and the default character presets being fucking hideous didn't help and probably scared a lot of people off. The game is probably like a 7/10 and is definitely better than skyrim or oblivion on pretty much every metric besides being able to move bread around and killing random NPC's that aren't important to the story.

I dont know why, but the Pillars of Eternity setting is just so boring to me.

One overpriced two ugly three the Outerworlds was bland it made Avow worse in people's eyes. Also x pass made it so if you wanted to try it you'd get x pass for a month then delete it.

Honestly. It looked lame. They should have stuck with the original concept of it being a darker version of Skyrim.

I'm not surprised the combat was good it looked like the best part for me it was every thing else that made it less interesting. It didn't help it's 70 dollars when it should of been 50 and they did an ass job marketing it as anything other then a more lame outerworlds. Witch is funny because I've seen the marketing for outerworlds 2 with makes me want to get a new hobby. But I do hope they put Avowed on a 90% off so it'd be worth buying.

There are a ton of games, there will be a ton of games, and a ton of games were already made. Avowed offers nothing unique in the medium or genre.
I can refuse to play a game with poorly modeled feet and I'll still have a ton of games.

I played it via family share because my brother bought it on sale as a big Pillars fan.
It really is not as bad as /v/browns make it and is a pretty serviceable RPG. It's not Starfield bad or anything, and a LOT better than the Outer Worlds. some of the quest lines are neat, and the companions are fine. The magic feels good as fuck to use, maybe one of the better magic systems in an RPG in terms of how you use it in combat.

On to the bad though -

>barely any gear variety and the upgrade system forces you to use 2-3 things all game long (I used my rifle from the second zone to the end of the game)

The game is in that weird spot where it was pretty good but not good enough that I care to defend it against an army of brown people who haven't played it and never will. This series is cursed and they'll probably never just make the first game but better, which is all anybody wants.
