Is there a poorly-rated, generally disliked or relatively mediocre game that you play on a fairly regular basis because you personally enjoy it?

Now you just have to wonder just many critically-disliked games out there, no matter how hated, have fans playing it just out of personal, unexplainable attachment.

About 40% of them are like that, actually. Mediocre or straight up bad games I love mostly include a lot of ancient shitshows like Shogo or Might and Magic 8, which I play near religiously due to nostalgic memories and appreciation of the absurdity, past hyper niche or straight up hated games that are genuinely great, just absolutely not accessible to mainstream audience, like Cryostasis, Origina War or the entire IPL library (Pathologic 1/2 and The Void make it into yearly playthroughs).

All together, these bad but funny and/or nostalgic titles and weird contemporary niche shit makes up for a lot of the time I spend with games, and if I didn't literally NEED to play more generic mainstream titles for a job, I'd spend even more time on them.

Shogo may arguably have a cult following, but it sure as fuck wasn't beloved when it came out, and as for MM8... no. Just no. MM6 sure as fuck was highly praised, even 7 had some pretty hardcore if smaller fanbase, but MM8 was considered awful at the time, literally four years behind the times and an embodiment of an wash-out franchise being a powder that once used to be a horse at the time and even today, barely anyone gives a fuck about it.

Though I will give you that while nobody gave a shit about MM8 then and barely anyone does not, it sure as fuck wasn't as bad as MM9.

It was recieved very well as far as I can tell / remember. On meta it has 80% and I remember the reviews being mostly very positive back then, in the days of paper magazines. All of the Spellbound Comandos-likes were getting very high praise, it's just that this particular genre was already incredibly niche even back in 2002, which is why you don't see people talking about it today.

It's a genre that died extremely young.

I had at least 1000 hours in this just fighting bots. Wish they took the Battlefrontpill and scaled the fights up to 32v32 with vehicles from both sides. ISA using their ramshackle APCs and Not Abrams vs Helghast agrav tanks, jet bikes and dropships. You can alternate the power difference by giving the ISA air and number superiority with their conscripts stationed in orbit while the Helghast have a distinct advantage in the realms of high technology and close proximity.

I'm pretty sure when he is referring to "those games", he is referring to the Operation Flashpoint games, not the ARMA sequels.
You know, Dragon Rising and Red River - the two games that have nothing to do with Bohemia Interactive?

>>723810536
>what are the best arma campaigns really?
Honestly, if you can swallow the jank I still think OG Flashpoint and Resistance are the best campaigns, with most memorable setpieces and fun writing.
The gameplay is... very antiquated. But it's pretty fucking obvious later ARMA games put a lot less emphasis on the campaign and focused far more on the sandbox, while OF had some passion behind it.

But if you want a good semi-realistic shooter campaign that isn't bogged down by the most clunky simulation ever invented by a human being, you'll need to play something like Vietcong instead. Just remember to patch the shit out of it, stay the FUCK away from the sequel, and most importantly: you character actually has a flashlight on him, it's by default binded to L. DO NOT FORGET THAT. You'll thank me later.

Money and a shifting balance of power if you believe the paid campaigns. Bots would say that China is winning/losing on a weekly basis. All I know is there was a time during the mid 2000s where the Chinese were being catered to via playable factions in games like Battlefield and CnC Generals etc before they fell out of favor. Then you have something like the Fallout TV show and 76 which goes out of their way to avoid name dropping because they still want that ricefarmer money. I think it's hilarious and they are not being subtle about it in the slightest. It's comparable to the time when Injun MCs were a brief fad before they too fell out of favor because there is no money to be made from catering to a dying people.

However my biggest jank obsession is easily Soldier of Fortune 2. I've beaten that games more times than it deserves, played the multiplayer more than CS (It was better, fuck you), made my own mods, got a gf from it, got her pregnant, sheeit. Fun fact. I had SEVERAL friends who beat the game without knowing about the flashlight thing. Like - actually, the whole tunnel ordeal, both levels.
And having played the game unpatched the first time around, I have some traumatic memories of my own of that FUCKING PILOT GETTING STUCK BENEATH THE FUCKING EVAC CHOPTER OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

>However my biggest jank obsession is easily Soldier of Fortune 2.
Yeah, I can get behind that. I didn't discover the joy of SoF2 until very recently - I just wasn't impressed that much with SoF1 back in the day, and thus gave SoF2 very little time... and the more tactical focus ended up putting me off even more.

About two years ago, I've decided to replay both SoF games out of some weird compulsion, and while SoF1 is still... eh, I actually had an absolute blast with 2. The fucking airport level man.
Best videogame depiction of just sheer physical violence ever. And at the risk of sounding like a psycho - it's so fucking fun.

After playing Gran Turismo for so long having the ability to deck your cars out in custom liveries, clan symbols and jacking everything up on NOS was the shit. If they had access to the used market that GT 1 through to 4 had you would have a very nice ricer simulator on your hands. Get something like an old Datsun Fairlady Z, Skyline R30, Mercury Cougar, Midget II or a Plymouth Superbird and just ring the bitch out.

I know Forza Horizon tried filling that niche but they spend far too much time jerking you have with the shitty festivals and locking their lists behind a one armed bandit. Should just focus on the cars and open world races along with actually improving on what Project Gotham and Midnight Club did years prior. By throwing bikes back into the mix for the full haul.

On a related note, I hate how retards say, "You can't make a Superman game because he's too overpowered and can't die!"

Shit yeah I remember a glitch or two happening during stressful missions with limited saves. As a kid it was the POW rescue, fucker just died all the time for no reason. Replaying recently the tunnel level felt so short, think it was just intense for me the first time.

My favourite level in SoF is probably the hospital, but theres something comfy about the shitty Russian military bases as well. The game had issues but didn't deserve the sequel it got.

>As a kid it was the POW rescue, fucker just died all the time for no reason.
Yeah, that is the mission. It was INFAMOUSLY bugged at the time of release. The POW is the aformentioned pilot. His A.I. is unbelivably wonky and in the 1.0 version, there was about 80% chance he'll stand beneath the landing evac chopper at the very end of the mission, causing it to get stuck and force a FULL RESTART, because there is a checkpoint that happens right as he gets there, and he can't be moved either.
The whole fucking thing takes like an hour, with him being liable to break at almost any point, but getting him through safe till essentially the end cutscene only to see him fuck up, several times in a row... that was fucking painful.

It got a lot better with the patches, but back then, I was still living on Dial-up and patches were a rare commodity.

>Havent played Vietcong 2 but I think people have the same sentiment with that too.
Its only value is to see just how many ways you can completely fuck up a once great game. One of biggest disappointments of my life.

That whole era was so fucking grim for Czech game development. Watching all these great studios: Altar, Pterodon, Illusion Softworks, even BIS getting fucked up by western publishers was heartbreaking.
Seeing SOME of that talent being recovered by companies like Warhorse is a bit uplifting though.

Note how unbelievably bland this is. Note how big of a faggot you are too for needing it to be linear instead of having it play out dynamically. I think the maps and level design was very underused in actual missions. The map is fucking huge and when you roam around freely you can really apreaciate it but for missions most of them blend together a lot. The stealth mission was quite awesome.

Yeah, OFP was a Japanese dating sim, of course.
The point that your third world reading comprehension failed to grasp is that these games were trying to provide a cinematic "realistic" experience but couldn't because neither BIS nor Codemasters were able to make a decent engine that doesn't play like shit. The games are tolerated because of their other qualities. Those qualities are NOT found in the campaigns unless you're just being a nostalgic homosexual.

Dragon Rising is a no nonsense tactical FPS that tries to maintain realism in its scenarios and combat. Red River is much more cinematic and Call of Duty-ish in its presentation. That said, the black sergeant is hilarious and it really nails the atmosphere and vibe of a 2000's middle East deployment.

I'm still here, I'm just struggling to come up with interesting suggestions along the lines of those games. I mean other than shit you'll absolutely already heard of, like Outer Wilds or Papers, Please or Return of Obra Dinn. Penumbra (Overture and Black Plague specifically). People know Amnesia, which is OK, but frankly, graphics aside, Penumbra is much, much better than Amnesia.
What else? I'll just rattle some random favorites of mine: Myth: The Fallen Lords, Homeworld, The Longest Journey, Grim Fandango and Syberia, Dungeon Master 2, Master of Magic, Jagged Aliance, Bastion... most recent game that got me was There is No Game, it's really neat and nowhere near as up its own ass as the title suggests. In fact I wished it took itself a little more seriously than it ends up doing, but it's a good comedy non-the-less. I liked the original Stanley's Parable (the free HL2 mod, not the full-release one - the two are very different, with the latter being a lot more obnoxious than the original). INFRA is weirdly satisfying to me. Cultic and HROT are fun games I keep coming back to recently, but probably just because I'm old and east-european.

I don't know if any of this is of any use to you.

Totally different. Both good. Rainbow Six is all about tactical insertion into buildings as SWAT team simulator, OFP and ARMA are more like US Army/Marines simulators where you have to walk a few kilometers through empty wilderness to take out a SAM site.

>How do Operation Flashpoint and Arma compare to Rainbow Six games?
About as much as a raven to a writing desk.

Absolutely different types of games, maybe aside from relatively high emphasis on realistic gun-handling, and even that is questionable.

ARMA/OFP are combined arms warfare simulators, and frankly, 99% of their appeal is in the sandbox multiplayer, the campaigns are little more than extended tutorials for each individual type of combat scenarios you can experience in the sandbox. Meaning the emphasis is on large scale conflict - the maps are literally hundreds of square meters large with dozens of realistic vehicles fighting alongside the infantry, each and every one fully simulated and thus, controlable.

In the campaign, you may get a more currated selection of infantry assaults, tank battles, artillery barrages and airplane / chopper missions to get you familiar with each thing in a more controlled fashion, but the point is to get all of them fully playable and present on the map at the same time, because that is what most people will do: they will organize massive battles with dozens of players chosing vastly varied roles - from basic infantry past spec-ops past mortar crews past spotters to bomber pilots, and then duke it out in major battle.
