Playstation revealed the PS4 in february 2013, earlier than Xbox expected since the PS3 still had The Last of Us and Gran Turismo 6 planned for later that year. Microsoft was forced to show their hand early and revealed the Xbox One without a single game for the system ready yet. So they pushed the features of their OS instead and it backfired hard.
The Xbox One was still a horrible console on every front, but that reveal only made it worst for them.

It was a natural progression from Kinect's success. Yes, success. The damn thing had about a 1:3 attach rate, Kinect was objectively a commercial hit. Problem is that it came at the expense of the hardcore Xbox fans' faith slipping, something Microsoft clearly gave negative fucks about when revealing Xbone, and in the end they lost damn near everyone for it.

The funniest thing about the video game industry is that you have all these executives who really have no idea what they're doing. They think to themselves "What do I want out of a video games?" and they think that's what everyone wants. They always kept trying to push an all in one entertainment console because it worked for the PS2 because at the time DVD players were expensive and people bought it for that and to also play games on.

There was no thought process, Xbox was already dying when Peter Moore left, it finally collapsed in 2009. That was the point of no return for it because Microsoft Corp. took over, just a slow downhill from there.

>>723813308
Doubt, the Japanese branch of Sony still controlled the PlayStation, that's why the PlayStation died in 2016 when the western branch took over.
Anonymous No.723818847 [Report] >>723819932
>>723816868
Yup, this is why PlayStation and Xbox were always distant to die and go third party. Their other problem is what Apple stated, no original ideas, they must always copy to compete thus people would rather play on the original hardware over the copycat. This is why Microsoft can't beat Valve, this is why Sony can't beat Nintendo.

>>723816530
Sony pushed things slow which is why they had loyal fans, Nintendo tends to be dicks sometimes like Valve, but like Valve, they love gaming and they'll always give their fans what they want, which is why they both have the most loyal fans. Microsoft went through several generations in two generations in gaming while fucking their fanbase harder in the ass than ever before.
>forcing devs to downgrade their game for their weak ass console
>making their players pay twice for online
>killed free map packs and forced paid DLC
>held back gaming with parity clauses
>refuses to upgrade their controllers thus holding back gaming
>forcing motion controls against players will and turning it into a gimmick instead of something "revolutionary"
>not dropping Kinect when even Nintendo were dropping motion controls
>forcing Kinect to be always on/always watching whiling making an online only console for TV, sports, and movies
>shitty naming schemes
>ruins first party sales while trying to ruin other stores on PCs and rival consoles with Game Pass subscriptions where you literally own nothing
>make barely functional first party games while forcing woke propaganda in them
>tries to force third parties to put woke propaganda in their games
>before killing it, tried to raise the price for Xbox Live
>were the only company not allowing free online for free-to-play multiplayer
>would finally allow FTP on their console but then brought back paid FTP with Game Pass
>trying to make a console/PC hybrid pricing their own fanbase out of 10th generation
It was a clear progression from Microsoft. They honestly deserve more hate, GFWL was a warning.

You're wrong, OP.
This was not a delusional misplay from Microsoft. Sharing clusterfuck aside, this reveal promotes exactly what the changing winds of the time period demanded - a banal, ugly, pandering multimedia crockpot designed for wider audiences first and aiming directly up the ass of the point where gamers were starting to be subsumed by the Vine demographic. Technically, this went over exactly as they intended and, between that and the Xbox brand's legacy of being the best for classical multiplayer gaming, it was probably what kept them from getting surf-and-turfed out of the salad bar for ten years competing with a console that was objectively better.

There was no earliness to it, they thought gamers were actual normalfags that were willing to watch TV, sports, and movies, just like they thought gamers only wanted multiplayer slop, all of it blew up directly in their faces all at once. Just like the woke nonsense now, gamers have migrated to Nintendo and PC gaming and have left Xbox behind except the shills, is starting to leave Sony behind for similar but not exactly the same reasons. The industry was never collapsing. It was just dumb ass analysts who thought mobile gaming was going to kill console gaming. At that point XBOX and Playstation were pretty much even. That reveal and the original XONE were so fucking bad it turned a 50/50 even market split into a 80/20 steamroll in favor of Playstation.
And Phil Spencer said it himself - losing that race was the worst race for XBOX to lose - cause everyone buying a PS4 over the XBONE meant everyone gets into digital/forever libraries with Playstation - and once people have tens/hundreds of games on their Playstation accounts its very difficult to get them to move over - for those people XBOX will either be an afterthought or get ignored entirely. People who say Don Mattrick killed XBOX really aren't that far off. That doesn't excuse all the fuckups Phil Spencer had but even in the most generous scenario with things like Halo actually being decent again - Fable being fucking finished - and Gamepass constantly growing - XBOX would still be deadlast in the console wars and it wouldn't even be close all because of that one huge fuckup.
