It was on the topic of surface/deep/dark websites and how they function, not the content served by them.
As my professor described it, surface sites are those available to be indexed by search engines and web crawlers. Think Google, and 4chan in its current state. We can estimate the size of the surface web.
The deep web are websites that can't be indexed because of authorization. Think the inner company websites, profile pages, organization-specific websites. Shit an average person sry Google wouldn't ever be able to access. Because these websites aren't indexed there's no way to estimate the size of the deep web.
The dark web are sites that can only be accessed through having the correct network and security protocols. Each node in the network only knows the location, or part of the location, of the next nodes.
I didn't speak up (obviously), but from what I understand 4chan has always been surface, because it existed as a place for moot to talk about anime, which was banned from SA at the time.
