Arcade games are honestly dogshit. PC games from the 90s and early 2000s are for real men.

I thought the appeal of stuff like Pacman and old Mario was that there was nothing around so anything slightly good would have the spotlight.
Then I played games in an arcade earlier this year and discovered how fun these two were and how much more enjoyable than much of the competition they were.

In linear games you really don't miss much like in modern games, and you experience everything for the most part. In modern games, usually openworld, you beat it while missing a shit ton of side content, but backtracking sucks dick so you drop the game while probably experiencing 50% of it.

Is this that statement supposed to be ironic, given that some of the best and most influential arcade games of all time were made by the West, and that any time the West were tasked to make a sequel or created a conversion kit for a Japanese game, it was far superior than any sequel those silly Japs would make
This board will endlessly bitch about "gameplay density" and then ignore pure gameplay stuff like megabonk, halls of torment and so on just because they are popular. Missing forest for the trees

VS wishes that it was as good as Robotron. I don't hate VS but the only time that game is arguably any good is at the beginning of a new account, when choices matter and there is an actual risk of losing the round.

If you're saying that RPGs don't belong to early 2000's anime culture then you'd be wrong. I'm pretty sure RPGMaker was at the height of its popularity with it's year 2000 release so there were lots of doujin games that used it. Its original version released back in 97' too so it's even older than that.

But Zones is objectively the best way to make a game. You can play through it at least a half dozen times and experience something new every time just by taking different paths. As long as there's quick travel between zones not connected directly by load transitions it's great. Much better than levels where you play the exact same game every time.

The density is bad if you have to replay different paths in ng. The rule for good density is one playthrough and devs maximizing unique, unmissable challenges for the run. "zone" games are good, but proper levels with attention to detail are unmatched.

Hmm, you're right. The strength with zones actually is that those don't waste resources building the connecting borders, and only show you locations with purpose. Open world has to use filler by nature. For density it can be similar I think, but backtracking might just be higher with zones like that, not that it'd be automatically bad. Depends how much a game asks you to.
