Will we ever return to proper handhelds? I just bought a New 3DS XL and its been the first time I've been able to enjoy gaming in ages. The ease of use, quick pickup and play value and ACTUAL portability have allowed me to enjoy vidya when life and work have me swamped.

How do we get these companies to stop making giant "portable" bricks and return to form?

Probably not.
Handheld consoles are dead. Its just gonna be mini-consoles like the Switch and Steam-Deck and what not, and smartphones.

Real handhelds will never happen again because tablets which are worse overall replaced them.

The touch screen on the DS was much more responsive, and you could fluidly combo different types of taps, swipes, strikes, shakes, and shapes in motion.

Combine that with the secondary screen and the options for unique gameplay go up. Not to mention the microphone etc.

When it comes to the switch it operates much more like a tablet which is why the TWEWY remake playoffs awful on it. It's also a stationary console at heart, which is why it's gimmicks follow the switches with waggles, detached joycons got a motion sensor.

There's a fine line between the two .
>>723862965
>Uhm yes they are
The switch is closer to a phone, tablet, or stationary console than it is to a gaming handheld device. Portability is a built in feature of handhelds but it doesn't instantly make your device a handheld.

Which Hatsune Miku? Azure Striker was on my to do list. I only have a couple of games on mine at the moment (Tales of the Abyss, Kid Icarus Uprising, Ridge Racer and Kirby). I got a smaller SD card in my system (8GB) cause I didn't want to fall into the trap of downloading a shit load of games and not playing them. Gonna finish Tales and Kid Icarus then move to something else

It is pretty bad yeah I'm not gonna lie. My eyes have gotten accostumed to be screen tech so going back to this is pretty jarring. At times I can literally count the pixels and the lack of aliasing is pretty bad. I did notice playing with 3D on makes games look a lot sharper. But thats why we need NEW versions of these devices

Nah, phones bit off a huge chunk of potential adopters. And UMPC is a thing now for enthusiast.
There will never be a handheld exclusive game anymore.
Only thing keeping it limping are chink retro handhelds emulating decade old titles.

The second screen was good when the DS first came out and devs were being really experimental with it and creating unique games. By the time of the 3DS era though, they had gotten over it and most games were just normal games but with an screen on the bottom for slightly better menuing. You weren't getting shit like TWEWY anymore and sometimes the touchscreen was a detriment to the game because they would force touchscreen gimmicks into games that didn't need them. Also your opinion on what is and is not a handheld is based entirely on vibes, you haven't given any real reason as to why a Switch or Switch 2 isn't a handheld but the PSP and Vita are despite them functionally being the same except the Switch is bigger. You don't even need to reply honestly because it's just going to be the same dumb argument of "it isn't a handheld because it doesn't fit in your pocket"

It isn't a handheld because the gameplay and focus of it are on features made for a dedicated console.
The portability is a general side note based off a tablets formfactor. You don't call a tablet a handheld gaming device. The docked mode further iterates it's wish to be a sit down console with games meant to be played on your couch, that you're given the option to take on the road with you, using joycons strapped to the sides of the tablet as a controller.
It's ergonomics is complete ass when you compare it to something like the Wii-U tablet which felt enjoyable to hold. That also signals Nintendo ideology that you should primarily be using this as a sit at home console.

The PSP existed in a more analog world, releasing prior to the iphone, advent of the smartphone/tablet. The Vita is it's continuation and last of their handhelds because they couldn't find a niche in the post tablet world, and meet the quality standard in graphics for the form factor.

You can't define why the switch stands out on its own as a handheld gaming device instead of just a tablet.

I personally feel you have put a disproportionate ammount of value on a term, that while useful in a broad sense, is functionally worthless. Your question is not worth an answer, and if I were being judgemental, I might assume you are trying to set yourself for a "little win" no matter how trivial. I would also assume you have pattern of this behavior in your life and it annoys your friends.

>Fire Emblem turned to waifushit to survive
>Pokemon turned to shit in general

I don't care about a win. I'm just saying the identity of the switch is handheld console 4th or more down the ladder and that is different for what the identity of the
Gameboy -> gbc -> -> GBA -> GBA sp -> DS,/lite -> 3ds/XL had.

That's going to happen when you merge the identity of your home console ecosystem directly with your handheld one.

Probably not. Since the end of the 3DS lifespan smart phones have essentially absorbed the entire audience. Even if something crazy came out like the “psp ultra new decade edition” or “switch dualscreen portable” came out with their own library of respectable games it still wouldn’t be able to re-entice people who now use their smartphone for entertainment.

the 3ds dual screen patent just expired so chinese handhelds will start producing double screen handhelds

not only will you have more powerful 3ds consoles with high refresh rate and hall effect sticks but they will please the zoomer tiktok crowd with ADHD that needs to watch those shorts with the gameplay going in the background so they will double task watching shorts and play vidya on the second screen making handhelds popular again

My dad owned a game gear growing up i used an played maybe like 4 times. As a kid the size of it never felt like a big issue or problem when playing. Only two games I remember has to be power rangers and sonic.

Biggest overall problem with the game gear.
6 AA batteries for 4-6 hours of battery life.
You'd go through a 24 pack of AA batteries in a single school week.

Economically it didn't make sense to play because you'd make the house run out of batteries and if you had brothers who also had Gameboys that was a limited resource.

Battery would die before your hands had a chance to cramp at the controller size.

Doesn't do much when there's no incentive for a developer to utilize a second screen.
That's the cool part about console companies. They can create an entire unique gaming platform/ecosystem that's impossible to exist outside of it.
