I don't think it really matters when you start on something addicting. Some years back I used to get my nicotine from smoking my pipe, but I eventually stopped because it was such a huge fucking hassle to maintain that son of a bitch. Every now and then I buy a pack of smokes, and have noticed that it's easy to get into the cycle of "I really need to go out for a smoke now" even if it has been a year or several since I last smoked. And then once the pack is gone, you need the mental strength to ignore that craving for "just one more pack and then I am done".

I smoke and drink socially, meaning once or twice a month. Never really had a craving for either.

I don't smoke but I remember being put out and drained completely at my job after dealing with a suicidal individual one foot off the ledge.
Had to take a 15 minute break, got some fresh air and walked by where the smokers were about. Some reason I bummed one and instantly after smoking it's like my brain was cleared of any lingering stress, and brain fog left from that moment and I could clearly focus on what I needed to get done again.

Can see why people end up getting addicted but for me it's as simple as never buying a pack. Can't get addicted if you don't buy it.
