It's not that complicated. Just make a train network full of raw resources from ore deposits and oil fields and drop them off at production sites and refineries as and when required. As for moving intermediate resources, you can again just use trains or a main bus to dump off resources at a specific production site. With EM plants and foundries getting to 1k spm is extremely easy.

It's fun figuring things out in Factorio. Or rather it's fun ONCE you actually figured it out. Getting there can be frustrating. Like trying to calculate ratios on your own.

My mistake was that I didn't notice there is Crafting time and Crafting speed. It didn't help that you never see them on the same screen. One has a tiny s behind it's value and one does not. This is actually extremely important. Crafting time says how long an item takes to create. Crafting speed on the other, which also is 0.5 (without the s) for most basic items, is the speed of your assembler. Now of course you get all of this information for free and your assembler tells you exactly how much it produces on average every second. Back then, when I played, you actually had to calculate this yourself. And not knowing that your basic assembly machines work at 50% speed (the factorio dev prefers to not use percentages for some reason), then ALL of your ratios are wrong.

My other more recent mistake was using the circuit network for the first time. You know lots of people just skip over the most important and the most basic things you need to know to get it to work. It's not enough to just say "this pump is going to activate and drain fluid from this storage, when it's at more than 90% capacity". If you do that NOTHING will happen. I thought I was retarded and tried out all different kinds of mathematical signs. Maybe I am retarded and don't know that < means less than? The game gaslights you like that sometimes. But then it turns out you need to specify EXACTLY what signal type you want to compare to the number you set. I thought (reasonably) if you didn't specify, it would just use fluid content, no matter what it is. No, you actually have to say that only when the LIGHT OIL signal in that storage tank is above a certain number, the condition for the pump is activated.

How do I get into this game? I played it for 11 hours and dropped it until further notice. Thing is, I'm an autistic minmaxing faggot and that makes games like this painful to learn
>Play an hour
>Unlock thingamajing crafting factory
>Realize my current layout has no room for that
>Make spaghetti to make it work
>Play an hour
>Unlock thingamabob crafting factory
>Realize my current layout has no room for that
>Make more spaghetti to make it work
>Repeat until there's so much spaghetti you want to restart
This is what happened, but I know that I'll just end up in the same spot after 20 hours becaue there's so much shit to unlock I can't prepare for.

More importantly, once I realized that it's a solved game and I can just download build patterns other people made so I don't have to think, it got hard to want to think about building layouts myself. I'm sure the other autists with 5000+ hours in this are way better than I am at coming up with ANYTHING for this game.

Anonymous No.723893814 [Report]
Making a bus is a retarded idea if you asked me.
Just learn the ratios of shit you need. It actually teaches you better design by making you aware of how much is too little and how much is too much.
Buses are for the filthy lower tier autist who doesn't want to be efficient.
And when you need to rebuild your ugly ass base? Yeah. That's more work on your shoulders. Ideally your starter base carries you to another planet without ever having been rebuilt, but you can easily do that without a bus.

How do bases that don't utilize a main bus work any different from ones that do? Not to say that the main bus is the only way to make a factory, but the principal stays the same no matter the layout: one section consumes a resource to output a product for something else to consume. The bus is just how you transfer the product around. Multiple things need iron plates, copper plates, electronic circuits, and so on and so on. So how do non-main bus factories "not bus things around?" Are they making a furnace stack specifically to make the iron plates needed for gears needed for red science, and then make a completely different furnace stack to make iron plates for green circuits for yellow inserters for green science?
Every factory has a "bus," what matters is how much of that bus is spaghetti.

a bus in this game is just a giant array of conveyor belts and pipes, where you'd generally have 2 (horizontal) rows of something followed by 3 empty rows, followed by another 2 rows of something and so on. so when you need something to build something else, you just run a line off the bus down or up to a mini factory. for stuff like gas and liquid, you just put pipes between the conveyor belts in the middle of those 3 empty spots.

Yeah no thanks. I own it and played 90h. Was fun for awhile but you burn out quick. I had a small complex of buildings with multiple floors constructing stuff but as I unlocked new tech I realized that I'd have to tear down a lot of it and I just don't feel like re-configuring half my base which would probably take 20 hours minimum.
Anonymous No.723897934 [Report] >>723899045
>>723897240
Yeah, that's the loop that kills it for me too. It’s like a trap disguised as progress - unlock new tech, stare at your base, realize everything’s a house of cards. You either spend 20 hours rebuilding or just alt+F4 and never come back. At least Factorio gives you the illusion you’re scaling up instead of kneecapping your past self every 5 hours.
Anonymous No.723899045 [Report]
>>723897934
agreed. it also doesn't help that the blueprinting structure's building zone is so small. I realize you can unlock bigger blueprinting sizes later but you can still only fit a couple medium-large constructors. It's almost useless for getting large builds up and running quickly.

You're exactly right. I reinstalled and loaded up my save recently and that's exactly what happened. I looked at the new tier 6-7 stuff I unlocked, realized my whole factory layout needs to be re-designed from the ground up and I just uninstalled.

Space Age 100% filtered me, lads. I can play base Factorio just fine, but am completely fucking lost as to what I'm supposed to in Space Age besides a very vague "make platforms somehow, ship stuff to them somehow, fly them to other planets somehow, use the stuff there to make 10 billion more different types of science packs." Tech tree's different (and missing stuff), I have no clue how any of the new stuff works. I know I'm just dumb, and it feels bad. Right there with you, OP.

First make sure your nauvis defenses are solid and that you have a bot network not only set up but also automated to produce more bots and roboports. Once that's good then make a platform and start researching as much space science as you can. Remember that you can throw excess stuff out into space so do that to prevent your platform belts from clogging up. Once you have thrusters researched, make another platform and build it for travel. You absolutely need to make sure you have ammo production handled to feed the turrets at the front of your platform. When you're ready to go then pick a planet that tickles your fancy and fly there with plenty of base building supplies on hand. Land and start figuring out how the new planet works. I recommend vulcanus if you want insane raw material production, but if you want to get into quality more then head to fulgora.
You can do it, anon. Just take it one step at a time.

The main benefit of the "Main Bus" is scalability. Adding new production lines is easy, as is extending existing ones. If you aren't producing enough Engines to feed your Chemical Science, just 2x the Engine Assembling Machines. If that eats all your Iron Gears, just 2x that as well. This works in theory until one of the input item belts hits the throughput limit. And in the case you are overproducing something, the belt will just back up and the materials are freed to flow downstream again.

This works mostly with vanilla and vanilla-esque mods (like Bob's) where all recipes have N inputs and exactly 1 output. You never run into a situation where some production line downstream is producing something as a byproduct which either backs up and stops production, or would be useful if it was transported upstream to where the actual production line of the byproduct is. Mods like Pyanodons are designed to make Main Bus builds unviable.

You have train stations for the major components. The copper mines have stations, the iron mines have stations, you'll have several smelteries for each that have their own stations, and then each component's factory has a station that calls for train loads of each of its materials and an output station for its products.

You'll still have a smaller main bus for all of the smaller crafts and science and stuff, but your main huge scale material production will be in isolated factories connected by trains.

I don't feel "too retarded" for it but at some point, after you just accomplished mass production of a certain pack, you realize the next one has like ten times more complexity and requires a factory at least 4x bigger including expansion to more resource nodes, not to mention a lot of waiting as you unlock the next technologies, and you just go "nah". It's just too overwhelming. And this happens right around the unlock of oil.

Then people say "haha you got filtered by oil" and no I did not get filtered by oil I managed to mass produce everything oil related quickly it is no different from normal resources. I got filtered by valuing my time and not wanting to deal with what feels like a job.

I built a separate drone logistics network from my main drones that delivers materials for my walls and turrets so they just rebuild the very few pieces that get broken and turrets stay stocked. Could be done with belts, but you still need drones to repair those walls. Ezpz stuff and then make sure to pipe in some oil for flamethrowers. Flamethrowers will save you for a long long time before you start taking bugs out at long range.

I beat this game a single time with a friend. It almost cost us our friendship because of a major disagreement on how to proceed with resource transportation management. He wanted to pump endless flying bot networks that would carry loads across a mega factory. I wanted to further segregate production into smaller factories, using programmed train systems. I ended up playing several hours solo on the save just to setup a larger demo as to why we should use the trains more, he caved out of complacency, and we played off that until the end.
