There's different types of winning.
Nintendo's is self-contained.
Valve tricked an entire younger generation into thinking PC = Steam, when it's just a 3rd party store. That incredibly successful marketing, viral or otherwise.

that's not entirely true.
the sole reason we have even a halfway competent support system with Steam (which still has a lot of problems) is because other digital storefronts were doing it way better and sort of forced Valve to step it up. some people don't remember just how bad it used to be compared to now.
competition, even if very lopsided, is good.

this is just pretending valve is only a game studio and not, you know, one of the biggest global digital infrastructures around with high-quality distribution in basically every world territory

they do loads of behind-the-scenes work and mostly make games "whenever they feel like it" or when illustrating a gimmick for a piece of hardware, and that's how they should keep doing it, really

Gaben has always been a tech guy first, gamer second. Valve reflects this. HL1-2 were essentially groundbreaking tech demos at the time. Gaben eventually moved on to other things.
I don't blame him for abandoning game development, it's a tough market and most released games since the 90s are financial flops.

that's the thing I don't understand. Sure if you're selling your company obviously the stock options are great because you can just cash out. But if you're a private company, what benefit does it give you? I just don't understand, it's never worked out for any game company that I can see. Even fucking EA is now private.
