Quake 3 is only the peak if you are an e-sports purist who wants the rawest purest distillation of the genre, because basically *anything* you change about Q3 will either lower the skill ceiling, raise the skill floor, or both, and there's a core of players (most whom are now 40 years old and hardly ever play anything) who will turn their nose up at any deviation from it.
The problem with every one of these Quake clones is that the second one launches, this crowd of people with half lifetime's worth of Quake 3 experience pour into the game at launch, and everyone else stands absolutely zero fucking chance against them because the Q3 formula is just hyperefficient and turning even the smallest difference in skill into an insurmountable advantage. Q3 sorts winners from losers more ruthlessly than anything else ever devised. No new player is ever touching formula and sticking around to git gud while Q3 veterans are still alive.
