Starsector is a good example of what predictable hard work can do if you keep your scope small. Just make one thing you think is missing from gaming and focus on it. Good 2D space combat, very few if any existed, dude make it, and it made him a bit of extra money. Its that simple.

Megabonk marketing was great. Guy had a tiktok account, posted his progress, then asked people for feedback and added it. I think you'll set yourself up for failure, for starts, if you go at it with the idea that this is the only thing you're going to do, and other people will celebrate you for it. That worked in a smaller world with a greater disparity in wealth. You needed a rich patron and you could be an artist, full stop. Some artists are born too soon, and Lovecraft was born too late. That's a primitive and naive way of looking at it. Games aren't something like visual art, writing or music, requiring significantly less time investment to do, and are very accessible to others. Games are insanely complex and massive things that take at least months (if you care about making something good, not cubes and default avatars) to make. When you get zero acknowledgement, let alone money, it makes it harder for someone to keep doing it, compared to arts or music.
