I think Disco Elysium would've been a lot better if the puzzles were neat and required some investigation or input from the player, or connecting the dots or something, they are just so barebones and shallow sadly, they solve themselves without any effort, all you need to do is have harry walk around then suddenly a floating orb appears around his head, you click on that orb and the game tells you everything and solves it.
I get they wanted a game without combat, but then you should at least put some mechanical complexity into the game, you can do that through puzzles or level design, sadly both of which are super shallow in Disco Elysium.
If you remove the game part which is huge, then you are left with dialogue and aesthetics.
I honestly don't think Disco Elysium excels in aesthetics at all! sure the art style looks solid but its nothing super creative or impressive, and the music isn't amazing either, i only remember 3 tracks from the game, its soundtrack pales in comparison to the best games, and the voice acting is good for the most part but i didnt notice some standout performance.
So even if we take the dialogue praise at face value (i also dont agree with all its praise) but lets assume its the best written thing in gaming, the rest of the package is pretty weak to justify its high placement and ratings.
I know journalists love to dickride this game because it makes them look competent and smart compared to their film bros, and its a leftist game so thats also like extra neat and cool, but when you examine DE under the microscope of merit, it just doesn't have what it takes man, i can easily list 50 games better than it.
