Switched to Linux 2 weeks ago. Haven't had any issues that I couldn't resolve in a few minutes. Worst offender was EU4 as it's a native Linux game with an Electron launcher that had issues under Wayland.

Well, I admit it, I had help from a friend when switching to Linux. He recommended Distro and installing the essentials such as codecs, programs, and NVIDIA drivers. Honestly, it was a simple process of copying and pasting, Ctrl+V and then Ctrl+C+Shift to the terminal.
After that, it's easy.

There are plenty of retard proof distros like Mint where it should pretty much work out of the box. I'm using opensuse personally and have had (almost) no issues at all, but nothing that required any more troubleshooting than something you might encounter on any other OS. You can generally avoid command line fuckery altogether if you're so inclined.

Mods that work by simply dragging the mod into the game folder without doing anything else work without any problems.

Those that require a launcher usually have a Linux version, examples include CurseForge,
Mod Organizer 2, R2Modman, Reload 2, etc.

Also, mods that require executables—well, I'll tell you something I discovered while trying to install RPG Maker XV. Proton for Linux not only allows you to run games, it also allows you to run executables. Take the executable from any installer in Proton and it will install it or open.

use group policy to control this. the local group policy editor is available on every windows sku except home, and you can use policyplus (third party tool) to get a functional equivalent on home.

you can disable copilot, onedrive, and configure updates however you want them via group policy. i've disabled copilot and onedrive and have it set to not update past 23h2 and only alert me of other updates but not auto install them.

if you're not on education or enterprise already you should consider edition changing to education, if only because it's supported longer (see pic). it's considered a flat upgrade to home or pro by microsoft (or any of the left column editions in pic) but is handled similarly to left column versions for the purposes of activation (i.e. hwid activation works fine, which is the most robust and easily bypassed form of activation). this is trivial to do with MAS, there's literally a "change windows edition" option.

Easy install babbies first distro aside, it really isn't that difficult. My first time installing linux I put together a list of things I needed to install to make desktop environment over a bare debian install (instead of getting a bloated-to-fuck premade desktop environment) and just did it. I even followed procedure to open a terminal *before* installation and shift root directories around so that I could use btrfs with automated backup/rollback software.

Someone who can recognize the difference between windows and (windows-like) linux will have the ability to adapt to either without issue whereas someone who can't will have no adapting to do at all. The only way this can be contorted in your favor is what you mentioned before - windows-exclusive software for which they'll have to learn an alternative - and that software will get ported out of necessity by its creator if any momentum for linux builds. You are wrong in every fucking way.

I only play singleplayer games, and I can upload the games I want to play to my external drive and transfer data to my main computer which has no connections to the internet. So I'm not really worried about copilot or microsoft watching me play degenerate shit. That said, I might install a linux distro to my secondary internet computer. I'm taking a comptia course right now and I'm basically required to use Linux in class assignments. This might be the universe telling me to make the switch.

The history of computing is fucking infuriating. If not for the law we would be decades if not centuries ahead in the tech sector.
Licensing and lobbying has locked us into 1970s standards for 50 years so far and at least 50 more to come. What a disaster.

>Funny, because Linux actually implements some OS research stuff that's cutting edge
It's not funny at all and the exact problem at hand. Instead of ditching this horrible base we keep grafting things from good systems on to it. And for no reason because everyone tragets POSIX anyway because they can because people refuse to drop it, as you're pointing out.

I'm so happy Linux is getting features toy projects had in the 80s.
An OS with as much support and reliance as it does is decades behind. It's like the C++ of operating systems. A needle of merits absorbed from other projects in a pile of shit.

>Yes, people believe in benevolent globalism.
Genuinely, I don't think they do; I think they're too stupid to realize the danger.
They think storing E2E Encrypted data "in the cloud" is the same as an AI selling their info wholesale to literally anybody partnered with Microsoft and see no difference because "It's all The Cloud® anyway!" Then they'll have a data leak and Uncle Sam will pay them in bailouts for being targeted by mean Chinese Hackers.

Linux is still in a better state than NT, which is for all intents and purposes from the fucking 60s and still pretending to be DOS.
Anyways, nobody has kept up with OS "research" because the vast majority of it is varying flavors of retarded shit, impractical nonsense, and stuff that sounds great on paper but in real world doesn't hold up. Also, Tanenbaum lost.

>So the danger for them is... nothing?
I mean their infrastructure is still ruined and their reputation is in the toilet but realistically this is part of the reason they and Microsoft don't give a shit: If their failure to follow safe security practices results in millions of people having their data stolen or companies having secret information leak about their customers, that's not their problem at all. Uncle Sam will just wipe the slate clean.

It's you and I who always have to suffer with our data and identities being stolen. And we're worth literally less than dog shit to them, because at least Dog Shit can fight back by getting stuck to their foot.

history of programming is pretty poor too, small group of people tricked the entire world into thinking OOP was a good idea to the point it's still being taught in schools today.
every program written that way runs like shit because Object > Animal > Biped > Ape > Human doesn't sit in a cache well.
