Wrong, the first game sets the intended tone by being the first entry. Fallout from the beginning expressed the theme of rebuilding and the conflicts of differing factions on how the future should be constructed. Fallout 2 was even more explicit in this with places like Shady Sands being functional cities with power grids and uniformed security. Fallout 3 breaks this by acting like the bombs dropped 5 minutes ago instead of 200 years previous.

I couldn't even find the motivation to F4, I really regret purchasing it. I only tried it more seriously years later with some mods to make it a real survival game and it was just ok but I was constantly being taken away from the immersion by the dumbass story and dialogues and didn't even reach the half game before dropping it.
Skyrim, Oblivion, NV are some of my most played singleplayer games, Enderal as well, but with F4 I couldn't and I don't think they'll ever make something I like again, I couldn't even be arsed to try Starfield.
KCD 1&2 are the real spiritual successors when it comes to what I liked about Bethesda games, hell even Avowed isn't actually that bad and CP77 at least takes itself seriously so there's still hope for the genre.

Explain how it isn't. You can go anywhere in DC from the start of the game. Quests are more open ended in more ways than having to pick the right dialogue, even the tutorial quests had branching paths. Optional locations are more fleshed out and filled with secret items and unmarked quests.

If you use a weapon your char isn't qualified to use in FO1, they will likely miss and hurt themselves. If you do so in FO3, you will be less effective, but still effective, because it's an FPS. Imagine if you had something like a Fat Man in a classic FO game, a miss would mean wiping out your whole party.

Not all stats are useful in FO1 (lol Charisma), most skills are trap options - but the mechanics are undeniably more conductive to actually trying different characters and having different experiences with them.

You've never played it. Melee/Unarmed is awesome, especially with drugs. At the early levels, breaking arms to make sure that enemies can't attack you is a good strategy, and it's easier to do it with Unarmed.

Before, stuff from the pre war period felt like unique relics of a bygone age. A simple pre-war handgun demolished stuff compared to what the Gunrunners cobbled together, energy weapons were all nuts, Power Armor was a unique reward, a prewar car is a total game changer for travel.

Now every other bandit gas scavenged power armor abd ebergyvweapons look like they were made in a basement
