I think it stems from the early days of Epic store. They kept buying out developers to have either permanent or timed exclusivity on Epic.
Multiple launchers is already a problem and people wanted to avoid having to install multiple storefronts too. So when users suddenly had to wait for their games or install Tim's bloatware, many people got antagonistic towards them.
You'll see that no one has a problem with Itch or GOG, because they add value to the market without trying to restrict you. This despite them having many games also available on Steam.

Epic had a chance, but the fact that the store launched without base functionality like a shopping cart means most people thought it was shit and simply didn't bother coming back later.

Yeah they're steam store traffic is a huge part of it but I noticed when I would take my game to an expo to show it off the sales were through the roof. I guess because playing it and seeing it for yourself is much more of a marketing strength than just seeing screenshots or pre-recorded trailers.

Steam isn't a monopoly unless you define an extremely specific market. "PC gaming" doesn't work because there are tons of big popular games that aren't even on steam, games like league of legends alone arguably rival steam in terms of player numbers. If we narrow the definition down to "PC gaming digital platforms", that still doesn't work because companies blizzard have their own platforms that have tons of players even if there are only the company's own games on it. This isn't even counting things like roblox, but i'm sure a lot of people don't consider those to be "real games" even if the roblox platform has millions of users.
So then market would you need to describe to truly say that valve has a monopoly? "Digital PC gaming store where people can upload games"? Itch.io is pretty big, and many amateur game devs choose to put their free projects on there rather than steam, as it's just easier to deal with if you want to upload a free game you made as a hobby, you can even do name your own price if you want. So really the only market you could say that steam as a monopoly over is "Digital PC gaming store for games that aren't big enough support it's own platform but not so small that the game is a hobby project where you sell the game for a penny".

Epic's storefront is weird.
My game isn't super popular anywhere, I've sold a total of about 50,000 copies. I have 40,000 of those on steam, and 10,000 on epic. I was lucky to have my game on the front page of egs, but I know tons that just got 0 marketing, and sold 0 because you have to dig manually for games, there's very little algorithmic support or marketing on EGS, you just get raw "here's what's selling/upcoming/most popular", which is great in some ways, but awful for selling.

I will say, that 10k on epic was from a one weekend period when I was on the front page, and I have sold like 3 copies since. I put it up as a free game and have gotten a lot more players and some bought my other titles but EGS is basically "if you don't succeed off rip you won't" cause once you fell off you're off.
