Why did it fail?
Anonymous No.724092934 [Report]
I liked it enough that I could accept its flaws, until the game forced me to play a girlboss single mom with "keep the baby alive"-gimmicks. Because that's exactly what I want to play as in my escapism neet-freak-life.

Only a few people were happy with it.

the entire setting is squandered on a pretty generic survival game with shitty scripted segments. it should have been a linear game instead, and focused on what it did well instead of being generic and wasting so much player time

Pretty much what >>724094003 said. The open world is effectively nothing more than a buffer between linear story sequences that work much better. It gets to the point where later on you can upgrade your character to ignore the survival mechanics outright. The DLC is much better purely because it focuses on that linear structure. They admit in the documentary they did on the game that the only reason they did a survival game was to chase profitable trends since their previous game, Contrast, barely made it out of the financial crisis and if their next game wasn't a remote success they'd have to shut down. I admittedly quite like it and would only recommend it when it goes on sale since Gearbox has it as a $60 for some fucking reason.

I thought it was linear a stealth/horror game where you had to pretend to live in a happy world.
It wasn't.

>completely change it into open world slop
i don't get it

i can only guess some marketing team or some shit told them that open world game sell better

everything that actually had effort put into it was great, which meant 10% of the game was good.
Openworld was pointless and extremely time wasting at worst
Stealth was a interesting gimmick but easy (should've made you gameover if you had too many of the happy pills, especially since 1 is all it takes during the coward ending )
if they had dropped the procedural generation bullshit and went for a 4-7 hour purely linear experience they'd probably be remembered for more than the (admittedly pretty damn good) 60s/70s inspired OST

It is really good for some reason and even the vocal ones are just genuinely good. Got me into one of the musicians they hired for it.

you can beat the third/first character/arthur's plot without crafting a single item on your second playthrough, which makes me question WHY PUT IN CRAFTING AT ALL?
The 2nd character is more interesting mechanically I guess if you don't like bashing unawares people in the head, but the random generation of layouts the game does is kind of rough with her if you're looking for a single recipe for something effective which is like saying "I want to play skyrim but I'm unarmed and I need to beat a bunch of dungeons too to find the sword recipe."
A flawed game with a good aesthetic, writing, and plot.
It has decent stealth, and garbage survival craft-a-thon built into it.

They could have done open world and dropped the procedural stuff. I actually barely noticed it was procedural until I found bugged terrain, and it really clicked on the second playthrough. Surprise, the hand-crafted areas are all best by far.

It’s really frustrating because the hand made stuff is so way above everything else it feels like they kneecapped themselves thinking procedural would help the game’s development, like theres a 8/10 trapped in a shell of a 4/10

It was always conceived of as a randomized open world survival game from the very beginning, but the fact that everyone keeps thinking it was somehow changed is exactly what went wrong. As the concept evolved, the game was clearly begging for a hard pivot toward a linear game, but the developers were too afraid to go all in and throw away all their early work because it was the game's entire original concept.

It's sad/funny/ironic: the developers started with wanted to doing randomized open world multiple runs survival game because they wanted more replayability after their previous linear story games didn't do very well. Then in deciding to do randomized open world, they came up with the idea of the memory-altering drugs setting as an explanation for the world being different between survival runs.

This makes sense and it's a total shame. They split the difference too which is funny. In Arthur's plot, every time you need a gas mask or a weapon you'll find one nearby if you look hard enough. Maybe not lockpicks or whatever but completing the game is basically a joke since loot is scattered randomly.

It could be worse, there could be level scaling where you never actually get more powerful in comparison to enemies lol

Paper thin asset-flip tier gameplay scraped across a great setting. I think in the end, investing in art assets and marketing was the correct move because at least it stands out amidst the other kickstarter slop. As was cutting Jim Sterling's lines.

Their fake britpop band had no right to being as good as it was

Hey that’s pretty good
The music team feels like they got told a vague description of the game while given a time date and got pure freedom to do whatever beyond that, those boys did a great job

Man you can just really feel that during some points, if not linear then hub world, I get that wanted the replay value and all those other points but man, I still remember the Bobby song ‘cause they were so excited to get their new shipment of crack cocaine. This game needs the Witcher treatment where they just redo the first game and pretend the massive fuck ups never happened

I think that's exactly what happened actually. They were given a brief outline of the world and themes and told to make something inspired by the 1960s/70s psychedelic era of music. They did it with Contrast too with Laura Ellis who is a very nice classic jazz singer.
