It gets to the point where later on you can upgrade your character to ignore the survival mechanics outright. The DLC is much better purely because it focuses on that linear structure. They admit in the documentary they did on the game that the only reason they did a survival game was to chase profitable trends since their previous game, Contrast, barely made it out of the financial crisis and if their next game wasn't a remote success they'd have to shut down. I admittedly quite like it and would only recommend it when it goes on sale since Gearbox has it as a $60 for some fucking reason.
