SR1 is amazing even if the boulder puzzles can get annoying. SR2 is a much better game but it's too short and a lot of it is backtracking. Defiance is ass but the story still holds up. Never got to play Blood Omen because no matter what I tried, I never got it to run on any PC.

When I learned that the game was somewhat unfinished it all made sense to me. Funnily enough the underutilized ares were conspicuous, but I forgot all about Turel by the end of the game. The fact Turel is nowhere to be found is also a pretty big indicator.

You don't seem to understand the point of enemies in this game, they're obstacles in your path and you are given the tools to dispatch of them like little puzzles that are different from area to area, the actual combat is simple but perfectly servicable.
SR2 takes all of that away and the combat at its core is still the same, so how can you say it is better? It becomes so boring, the best tactic is to simple run past enemies unless the game forces you to fight them by closing the path until you kill all of them.
Defiance is the game that actually tried to improve the combat, but only by half-assedly copying DMC.

Heh, in SR2 he was the kindest and most sincere character Raziel had met until that point, and you were supposed to mourn for him and the mentor/father figure he represented. But in Defiance we're shown the Hylden weren't totally wrong and the Ancient Vampires were just a bunch of zealots brainwashed by a giant squid, so much of his veneer came off, so much even Raziel started losing his patience with him. I found that interesting, they stuck to the "no one is black or white in this story" concept that was present in the series since BO1.

The creators of SR1 seemed to be working on the assumption that the sole purpose of combat in a game is to pester the player while they're trying to carry out other tasks, because they made a combat system that only irritates and never becomes enjoyable. That's considered the contrarian opinion but I agree, SR2 is much less of a slog to play through. LoK gameplay was never great and there's a lot of tedious frustrating shit in SR1 that was remedied in SR2.

I still have PTSD from the Silenced Cathedral when the spiders keep dropping out of the ceiling and there's no spikes/sunlight/spears to deal with them, so if you lose the Reaver you gotta go spectral and try again. Except the spawn portals are directly in front of the spiders so you can just get instantly stunlocked as soon as you enter material. SR1 has multiple areas with this kind of cancer.

In SR2 you don't fight exclusively vampires anymore so you are actually allowed to kill enemies by yourself without external help, it was a breath of fresh air honestly. As was the increase in Raziel's attack range, his range is so short in SR1 I don't understand why. The developers actually took the "half of SR1 is flipping cubes then shoving them into a wall" criticism and actually made more interesting puzzles in SR2.

Not to mention the story, I think the standoffs and conversations between Raziel/Kain/Moebius/Vorador are some of the best stuff in LoK and nothing in SR1 tops that aside from the intro. So yeah I don't get why SR2 gets so much hate, I think people were just caught off guard by how the story goes into a completely different direction from SR1 and because it's so short.

I just find the game boring. I agree that SR2 has much better puzzles; no argument there. But even the environmental design is richer in SR1. You're exploring places that feel real and aren't artificial tests (even with the shitty very artificial-feeling block flipping), between that and the rest of the level design SR1 is more immersive. SR2 doesn't care about exploration. That in itself isn't a big deal, but it's not like the game shores up the rest of it. It's just SR1 but stripped down and a little smoother with better puzzles.

The story does go in a different direction, but things were lost in the shift. In SR1, Nosgoth itself is a key player. We (re)acquaint ourselves with Nosgoth alongside Raziel. As gross and debauched as Nosgoth was in Blood Omen, it's a gothic wasteland in Soul Reaver. The thematic link between the two is a big part of why Soul Reaver holds up as a sequel to Blood Omen despite being so different. But then SR2/Defiance happens, and it's a lot of melodramatic exposition between the same few characters and now vampires are blue angel men afflicted with AIDS and the Kain/Vorador brand of vampire is something else entirely (yet still somehow qualifies as a vampire where necessary), and the time travel is vital to the plot but also arrests the immersion. Most of the macabre is gone. It's just dumb. It's Hennig entering cat lady fanfic writer mode. Even the cutscenes suffer; there's a stilted quality to SR2 and Defiance that's almost remarkable given how much more dynamic and interesting cutscenes in video games had become by the early 2000s. For a game that puts so much emphasis on its story you'd expect the cutscenes wouldn't be so flat, but even Ratchet and Clank has more spirited direction.

In a ground-up remake (preferably one that did the original story...) it would be an interesting inclusion, but it just doesn't work tacked onto the original game. It doesn't ruin the remaster for me but I'm not sure why people would feel inclined to defend it.
