PlayStation. It killed the only two real competitors it had (SEGA and Xbox) and Nintendo makes game for toddlers and deranged adults who still think their kids anyway. Plus they abandoned real gamers with the Wii and should have stuck with the GameCube where at least they were still somewhat respectable except for Animal Crossing and essentially "tranny coded" games. Also "PlayStation" is synonymous with gaming now where "the Nintendo" was the thing back in the 80s and early 90s before PlayStation even came out. The games available on PlayStation are more creative, play better, look better and an overwhelming majority will never be played on Nintendo's toy hardware since Nintendo makes shit hardware, which points back to them with the Wii.

Sony makes the most money and has all the big games, so them. They just invest it back into their games unlike Nintendo. Both Sony and Nintendo are examples of what not to do however. Don't invest $400 million into garbage AAA games but also maybe spend more than $13 million on your biggest IPs.

Playstation killed Sega, killed Xbox, pushed Nintendo out of the home console market and now they cope with their "hybrid" handheld. Nintendo is so terrified of Sony that they refuse to make a comparable console because they know they'd get their shit kicked in. Sony generates more money than any of their competitors. With Switch 2 it will be complete domination, all the third party games selling on Nintendo is what will truly kill Playstation and they can't do anything to stop it. It rarely got any of the big games people care about. Some companies tried with the cloud ports but those were rightfully rejected by the market. Nintendo is the worst console to own if you care about third party games because it doesn't really get them, every third party game is also the worst version and even the Switch 2 ports are watered down making compromises like having to remove NPC and enemy density. Elden Ring for the Switch 2 just got pushed back for further optimization and that's a PS4/Xbox One game.

Even AA games were often missing the Switch and games like Fate/Samurai Remnant ran by far the worst on it where it was sitting around 20-25 fps a lot compared to 120fps on PC. The Switch ecosystem is held back by also needing to be a handheld. The same trend is going to continue where third parties miss the Switch 2 if those games also don't have an Xbone/PS4 port.

It sold that much thanks to the COVID bump. Or maybe you forgot. If you remember, people were locked down and picked up the Switch and played Animal Crossing and Ring Fit Adventure to cope. Basically a bunch of casuals and people who don't play video games bought up and gave it a second wind. Also it was cheaper than the PS5 so it was an easier pickup.

Switch 2 also isn't a real console, it's just a handheld that can dock to a TV. It's not made to have major experiences that you get from playing on a high end console like PS5 is.

Devs are struggling to get PS4 ports to run already. The ports of games like Star Wars Outlaws and Cyberpunk had to remove things to get the game to run. If gamers reject Game Key Cards then I wouldn't be surprised if the Switch 2 has the third party support dropped. The Switch 1 had good third party support at launch too but that obviously died off when they ran out of 360 games to port.

You actually do, it just is usually part of the OS, but games can totally out-age the hardware architecture have fun playing Total War Atilla in this day and age. You are simply at the complete mercy of devs, either for the games or the OS, maintaining legacy support. Which they largely do (it's arguably the only big advantage Microsoft has compared to others, even on Linux there is a much greater risk for a random update breaking everything).

Nintendo is the most successful and long-lasting of the three, but Sony has ended up as the manufacturer of what is probably the "standard" console far as many are concerned. There's actually a rumor that Prime 4 is the first time they've actually gone over $100 million, and it's quite likely that number also considers the first iteration of the game that got canned. A game that took a whole console generation to come out and required hiring a lot of specialized people to Retro Studios still just now cracked that number. That if anything says a ton about how Nintendo budgets.

I'd presume games like the 3D Mario team's recent projects, Mario Kart World, the Switch era of Zelda, and Smash Ultimate did have fairly sizable budgets at least. Certainly above $50 million unless they did very tight budgeting, but still not in the league of some other AAA releases in the past decade.
