Is Ninja Gaiden 4 different? Yeah, but it was going to be no matter what, Itagaki is gone, the Team Ninja that made NG1 and 2 are gone. It was never going to come back. NG4 feels different but it also feels like a Ninja Gaiden sequel, both those statements can be true. DMC5 is basically the closest you'll ever get to going back to the "good ol days" because it was made by a bunch of veteran Capcom devs, and you still had people complaining about how it "lacked the classic vibe" or whatever. Because what people want isn't just "a game just like the old one", they want a game of *that* specific era, which doesn't exist anymore

We can never go back, NG4 is what we have, and its still pretty good, all things considered.

It's because you have hype vs. anti-hype and NG has been a quite dormant franchise (in regards to the 3D games.) Plus every re-release of the games has people questioning which ones to play and that extends even to people who were new and interested. A $70 price tag and add $20 more for the DLC that was announced before the game came out and that is simply too expensive for most people for at least for a franchise like this anyway. New characters that might upset old fans not to mention the lack of a series mainstay character for most of the game outside of simple moments. I like the addition of the Raven clan and how it expands the setting of Ninja Gaiden, the Raven Clan being a branch clan of the Hayabusa is interesting, the parallels to the Hayabusa clan, the callbacks and parallels to NG1 with Yakumo and Seori and Ryu and Kureha.
In Ninja Gaiden 1 the maiden of the Hayabusa (Divine Dragons) was murdered by Doku. Later in the game Ryu returns to her grave and combines the jewel the maiden holds on to with the Dragon Sword to form the ultimate weapon he needs to defeat the ultimate evil.
In 4 Seori is the maiden of the Dark Dragon, and to defeat it for good she is fated to die. Before her death she bequeaths the necessary requirements to form the Dark Dragon Blade to Ryu, if he should ever find a Raven Ninja capable enough then the blade shall be reformed to defeat the ultimate evil.
In both games the protagonist obtains their ultimate weapon in circumstances relating to the maiden's death.
In 1 Ryu is like a spirit of vengeance for the Hayabusa Clan, in 4 Yakumo becomes a redeemer for the Raven Clan. Seori manages to have some personality and they actually commit to her death fully.

Mainly I liked the new cast, Yakumo, Seori, Umi, even Tyran are all charming and I found their dynamics fun. Yakumo especially, he feels appropriate as the disciplined, mission focused protagonist of a Ninja Gaiden game, but he's just a bit more vulnerable when compared to Ryu, and him rising to the occasion despite the setbacks was satisfying to see in the end. Ryu himself is also pretty good here, he feels expressive and there's good respect paid to the history of the character. Kagachi was alright, bit of a letdown, Misaki was a big let down. The criticism is over what was removed. Yakumo and Ryu combined have few weapons. They have tiny moves lists between them with lots of overlap between what the moves actually do utility-wise. And I've certainly seen criticism over what was replaced. Even NG2 sparingly ha some wall running, pole swinging vertical ascension sections that felt interactive. The fact that so many rooms in NGB and NG2 were relatively enclosed gave you ample use of walls as a combat element, even if that was partially to cheese enemy with. I don't think it even occured to me to try those wall techniques in both my runs if NG4. All that was replaced by rail grinding and swinging pseudo QTE segments rather than something more interactive. There's nothing like that clock tower with all the gears you climb up in NG2 that is in NG4. The environmental combat that's encouraged is using grappling hook to jump to a wall and to (often unsuccessfully) attack kite soldiers that are a pain to even engage with without kage-hiruko.

Nah, it was underwhelming. Dante had a DT the entire entire series and was scheduled to have his SDT in 4 to boot, compared to that Nero's DT just felt like he wasn't on his level at all. Imagine what it would have felt in 5 where not only does Dante have that, you have Vergil with his own SDT and his own Doppelganger.

Besides, while Nero's old DT was visually interesting, functionally it didn't add that much to the character. His new DT gets to do the same stuff and more with the bringer wings.

My theory is that Ryu was originally never meant to be playable in the main game, only the DLC. So Yakumo getting the DDS would have felt cooler. Late in development they decided that not having Ryu in the main game would piss too many people off, so they put a stripped down version of him in, since Yakumo has the DDS anyway. Ryu in the Two Masters DLC has a brand new weapon, I think this was always the Ryu they had originally planned.

I don't really like the idea of every character needing a gleam/power up moveset. For someone like Ayane I would do something like have her exploding kunai interrupt red attacks and stun enemies. Add a new set of moves for weapon skills (the usual back forward and full circle inputs) and yeah tieing the kunai into it would be great, e.g. full circle + B being a fan throw. Apart from that just keep the moveset the same as 3RE, it was great.
If they were going to add a new playable character to the game they would advertise the shit out of it, it's a selling point of its own. The DLC is just going to be weapons and a couple of story chapters.

This was a good element of the story that was only slightly implied, and never explored. Ryu hiding his emotional attachment to the situation when he sees a paralel between Seori and Kureha is great, it's already more interesting than anything Yakumo's character has going on.
