The best part of the game is the beginning; it's a 7/10 at best, and it's downhill from there, and I mean really fucking downhill.

That's the story, writing, pacing, dialogue, player choice, all that shit goes off a cliff after 4-5 hours of gameplay. The shooting/looting is fun, but nothing special. If you're not nailing the RPG mechanics in your 3D RPG, then your gunplay would have to be blowjob levels of good for me to keep playing it.

Sawyer has been buckbroken by Vincke since Original Sin 2, maybe even Original Sin 1. He was forced to add turn-based to PoE2 thanks to DOS1, then PoE2 got BTFO by DOS2. Unfortunate!

I agree, but none of those games have the old spark. Let's not pretend KotOR2, NWN2 and New Vegas didn't have issues, but they're remembered for a reason. Their post-DS3 games are always talked about in mostly negative context. Even PoE1 is basically "oh they're trying to ape their IE games". Hilariously, Grounded was apparently the biggest seller for them.

Tyranny was written like a Wikipedia article. No, seriously, every few words you would have a phrase with a hyperlink that would pop open a box with an explanatory paragraph. Sometimes the explanatory paragraph would have hyperlinks to open ANOTHER pop open box! It was ridiculous how poorly presented the dialogue in Age of Tranny was. Also your bosses were "Guy with Red Head" (he was a hothead general of the army) and "Guy with Green Skull" (he was the Evil Overlord's CIA chief) and I started to wonder if the game was an elaborate joke.

that's most old school RPGs or games that ape old school RPGs. Everyone you meet is a walking wikipedia article or an enemy you kill, sometimes both. Adding hyperlinks is just the most honest end result of writing like this

You're putting players in a new fantasy setting, one which their character should be familiar with. You can add a codex no one will read, make NPCs into trivia dispensers with dialogue options like "what's a paladin" or add those links. They were actually the most praised aspect of Tranny.

yes, if it's pen and paper with a game master that can change things on the fly. It doesn't work for computer games that come pre-coded. At best you'll get a choice between a few different storylines or token choices like which party member you want to fuck.
Closest you get is stuff like crusader kings and mount and blade where you basically make up a story in your head to go with the sandbox

It's a sliding scale with linear games on one and and absolute freedom of having a human (or AI) DM on another (though in reality, even human DMs have their planned stories and will probably railroad you subtly). A game can't reach the total freedom one, but it can distance itself from linearity more or less.

New Vegas is Obsidian's most beloved game, and it tries to be a more "free" experience. It gives you freedom to pursue the faction you want, to solve every quest in multiple ways. But for you to make that faction choice you need context, you need to know factions' strong and weak sides, which is why a lot of NPCs will have opinions on those factions and will happily share them with you. Also why there are quests designed purely to introduce those factions, like the entire Nipton sequence.
