... but I decided 'fuck it' after playing Lost Coast. The Combine are such a boring fucking enemy compared to the marines in the original and Black Mesa. The gunplay is lousy, weightless and lifeless, especially compared to Black Mesa where the shotty gibs enemies.

I'll never understand the Valve fanboys that worshiped this slop for years.

Pretty much, Half-Life 2 was a novelty game. You can especially see it when you compare the mods of HL1 vs HL2. I joined when HL1's mod were in their gold age around 2001, just when CS 1.3 came out. You had so many unbelieveably cool multiplayer mods and communities. What did you get with fucking HL2? A bunch of shitty single player mods where you fight more Combine, because the setting has no flexibility, a bunch of shitty horror and sci fi themed mods that never peaked past their news announcement, some highly experimental mods where you could bases, and fly in space that everyone forgot, because they ran and played like ass and shit like "Plan of Attack", one of the first mods I played for HL2 that was so ass nobody remembers it anymore. The only reason anyone even thinks of HL2 modding is GMOD and the YouTube video craze it caused and some Zombie mods that were all thrown in the trash four years later when Left 4 Dead came out. HL2 was the most disappointing modding scene I've ever had the misfortune of living through. For years I had hoped to have the same fun I had from 2001 to 2006, but it never came, the entire fucking modding scene for that game was a joke.

Yes, but it’s now ridiculously hard to get any of the great user made maps made for those multiplayer mods I have looked around but barley found any. Do you know any archives of the old maps for mods like Vampire Slayer, Wizard Wars, Action Half Life, the Opera, the Specialists etc?

no, if it isn't on Internet Archive I can guarantee you it's somewhere on a hidden FTP server that is going to die very soon, impossible to find. The entire Half Life modding scene relied to heavily on fileplanet and filefront and regional hosting websites. Nobody could archive all that crap, because the files were too big and nobody owned the harddrive space back in the day to keep it saved. They are all dead now and with them the files. Even I lost my folder of Counter Strike maps I've downloaded passively since 2001, not due to harddrive failure, but because I did not think it would be considered lost media and I just wanted a clean install. Remember the lie they told us back then, that the Internet would never forget, yeah ..........................

Imagine playing the air boat section on a computer that ran HL2 on maybe 30-35 fps back when it came out. All those shitty puzzles, frame drops and loss of vehicle control. Best game of all time!!!!!!

There isn't a single FPS with better pacing than Half-Life 2. Maybe you don't like certain parts of its campaign, but its a constant stream of training you on new gameplay mechanics and story that keep you engaged.
Again, there is still nothing to this day that remotely compares.

Is there anyway to find any of these FTP servers or old modding sites that still exist? I had some luck finding some sites using Yandex, which does seem to be more reliable in finding old Internet content than Google but is there another way or maybe a search term that would work better? I had mostly tired searching for HL1 levels or by searching the level index such as “vs_” for vamprie slayer or “ww_” for Wizard Wars though most of this just ends up showing how useless most search engines are. For example if you search “VS_” “Half Life” duckduckgo brings up nothing and Google only brings up academic shit.

Most of the NWN modules and haks were pretty huge but they all managed to be preserved the same with UT and Quake levels. Also looking at most of the Vampire Slayers levels I have none are really that large in size so I don’t know why more hasn’t been preserved.

I love my 2004 boomer shooter. The music, the aesthetics, the gunplay. Every fucking gun feels strong as fuck. Even the weakest gun (in my opinion), the gun that shoots shuriken and lightning, saw a lot of use in my playthroughs. I unlocked almost every tarot.
