You have it backwards. The north, south, east, and west are cardinal directions. A compass reflects the cardinal directions.

The problem is the japs and chinks got this fucking backwards. They swapped East and west. The real issue is that the order is actually seasonal, not cardinal.

You made me check my own tiles and you're right, I'll fix the wind colors when I'm done with my current thing.
I've also been trying to make the edges smoother without adding too many tris cause there's 136 of them in the scene. I'm not really a 3D modelling guy, so I just split the faces at the edges and applied some Shade Smooth normals which helped a bit.

It's E>S>W>N in turn order. I know it's backwards from a compass when laid out on the table. The thing in the middle is a printed out version of a product called the AMOS Compass so people just call it a "compass," I'm not talking about a real compass here

The easiest way would be to just undo whatever you did here and get it back to a basic box, then do a fillet modifier. Tweak the settings for it (should be either 1 or 2 levels, can't remember) and it'll get you this exactly

That's where a lot of the issue for Mahjong comes in. You can say "you have to make pairs and then show them" to Western folks and they'll get that. But then you throw in BUT you get higher scores if you DON'T show your pairs and hold out for a ~~hero~~ Richii which is where you lose them.

It's honestly funny that RGG still includes Mahjong in the western release and STILL doesn't have a decent tutorial for it for Western players.

Ryu Ga Gotoku, formerly: Yakuza.

It's included Mahjong in each release (bar 3, pre "remaster'ed's release) and each time Western players bitch about it becuase the rules aren't properly explained. It's why "don't 100% the games" is a meme because Mahjong will stop most players dead on that front.

Closed hand, no triplets, non-value pair (anything but dragons or round/seat winds), two-sided wait.
Traditionally it was "a hand worth no additional fu beyond the base value" but in the modern game there are enough special cases with that that it's easier to just strictly define it

Specifically it’s a closed hand with no inherent fu, so no honors, no pair wait, the wait must be for instance 45 waiting on 3 or 6

Mahjong AI is messed up in Yakuza. The easiest tables are actually the hardest and vice versa and this wasn't corrected until either Ishin Kiwami or 8 where it seems like they finally addressed.
>Easy tables are the only ones I've ever seen yakuman, they constantly get baimans, they know how to read discards, they refuse to discard anything that could get you a ron reasonably, and they steal tiles efficiently.
>Very Hard/Royal tables are drunks who will steal every tile on the table, do 1000 point hands to troll you and everyone around you, never go above a mangan, do extremely low value plays, and could be considered legitimately braindead.

alright, sure. But then you have to consider that, if you take someone elses tile, you have to go for a super special awesome combo. YOu cant just take tiles and then go for 4 random triplets and a pair. You have to go for 4 triples of the same suit, 4 rows of the same suit, a straight. its super unforgiving if you struggle with the random ass tile design (especially the japanese characters) and have to consider wind bullshit and what not.

He would need another south tile or another 1 bamboo (The bird) for a triplet, then he'd need to discard the 1 character, he'd need to get a 7 character and decide if the 8 or 5 go, and then he'd need a 7 bamboo for him to actually win.

Even with that winning hand he'd have what, North/South wind if that's even on the table and a closed hand assuming he didn't ron?

You can't really make a simple tutorial for the game. After the first five minutes of explaining the absolute basic rules you get smacked with the list of 37 winning hands you need to memorize. You then need to play a couple of hours at that level to really grasp the fundamentals of the game, which is more than any other Yakuza minigame asks of you. That alone puts off almost everyone who doesn't already know the game.
Most westerners will never get to point where discarding strategy and building hands comes into play. You know, the stuff that actually makes mahjong fun to play.

Nope, I'm the only one who has really brought it up because I've 100%ed every game and it's something I've noticed over around 100+ hours of mahjong games over the years. It more recently stopped being a thing around either IK, LJ, or 8, I can't remember which exactly, but the highest tier in those is actually hitting baimans, regularly reading discards, and playing smart hands whereas the low levels are stealing everything and braindead.

It's just something you figure out from experience going for the completion list requirements in each game, especially the early games where you're required to get a 50k win (You either first place or you don't get it).

I'm not even sure if it's possible to make a mahjong client that works like this. Are you saying they don't have actual hands going in the background or are you saying that the CPU know what's coming up in the draw wall and can make hands easier like that?

And having to vaguely read the room to make on the fly decisions on how to form your hand, what yaku to make, when to fold is the fun part of mahjong. Getting a tile and just having a bad feeling about it for the match to go to draw and seeing it's someone's winning tile is a nice feeling. And those times when you get a 9-terminal draw and have to make the decision on redrawing for a more consistent hand or play the game in a slightly more likely position to make a hand that can one-shot opponents is simply something unique to mahjong. Of course you can do shit like all-in strategies in poker, but poker is 100% about luck and player reading which makes it pretty boring if you're not playing for real money. Having the actual game mechanics and strategy to mahjong gives you so much to think about

pinfu, tanyao is like 101 mahjong
Can't go wrong with it. Fast, can have versatile waits and you can get it to a mangan with riichi+dora

Why?
Looks like a potential chanta.
If he draws a 7-man, he can discard the 5-man and wait for a 9-man.
6,8 sou is kinda shit but when he draws a 7 sou he has another meld

in plenty of games, especially older ones, doubly so for arcades, the cpu plays in adeterministic way. you'll notice shit like the computer being retarded seemingly on purpose and discard pieces that complete your tile groups without a second thought. other times the game is rigged in a way so that you can't win at all, no matter how much horribly you abuse savestates

I mean I feel like it's more of an issue of the computer knowing what's in the dead wall because it's easier to write AI logic with a complete information set, but I guess that's exactly what you mean by playing in a deterministic way. But I feel like shit like a hand being impossible to win because the CPU know what's in the wall isn't really the game being rigged, but more so just by the RNG of tile order that your draw sequence for that hand physically cannot complete a hand faster than every one of the CPU's decision trees will.

It really isn't, it's closer to rummy than poker

Yeah, but poker only have 5 cards and variation instead 13 tiles + variations to score. The problem with mahjong for me isn't the mechanic it's more like remembering the hands, too many variations to memorize unlike poker.
