Out of 19 chapters you use Ryu in 3 or 4, one of them being a single boss fight (lol)
Also Yakumo gets 5 different weapons, including one that makes him play like Ryu, while Ryu gets only one

I'm pretty sure those games automatically turned you to face the enemy when you attacked, and most strikes had movement built into them, sometimes a lot of it. NGB is simply the greatest action game ever made because it realizes a game is more than the sum of its parts, complaining about the puzzles or platforming being "basic" or "distracting" is the midwit critique. The genius of NGB is that you're never doing one thing for too long, it has just enough variety that the combat never starts feeling monotone, it's very similar to Resident Evil 4 in that regard. Of course NGB also has some of the greatest extras and higher difficulties ever seen in gaming, something NG2 also falls short of.

NGB is the complete package, the perfect combat system AND the perfectly paced campaign, while NG2 is like an unfinished tech demo where they ran out of time and money halfway through

I think you can force a checkpoint if you enter training mode through tyran, you will save your progress after you exit the training mode but you start at the spawn of the actual checkpoint in the level, all the enemies in front of you are cleared up to Tyran though.
I'm not super sure about it, but I read someone talk about it and I tried it once in chapter 1 on MN and it seems like it works there.

Not even remotely comparable. DMC4 has incredible combat that feels weighty, especially with different enemy fall speeds. It also has insane depth with inertia (among countless other tech), which is not only extremely useful for movement and keeping combos going but also very difficult if not impossible to master. Meanwhile, NG4 is a suck to target, auto-tracking, floaty, mash X for awesome, simon says, perfect dodge / parry slop mess. There is no meaningful depth to the game beyond timing blood raven parries and perfect dodges, which is shallow and boring. Ryu is really fun, only did one chapter with him and I'm already looking forward to more tools in the DLC. His actor is still having a blast in his 70s.

I just got a new computer two weeks ago and it came with a month of gamepass so I was able to download and install NG4 and NG2 Black for free.
While NG2 Black is a really fun game and has a lot more weapons, NG4 completely mogs it and most likely every other NG games. I played some of NG Black a long time ago, never played 3.
I know these games are over 20 years old now but NG4 is just so good.
I really enjoy the aesthetic.
My only gripes are Yakumo being a little cringe and the fucking babygamer yellow paint.
I beat NG4 and NG2 Black on Hard, NG4 felt much more difficult and had better boss fights.
I will be attempting master ninja with the dark dragon blade.

I know its bait but unironically if you want action games to have fun adventure elements, Souls games show how to actually do that. A degree of non-linearity (not open world), compelling secrets, and a couple trap sections are how you properly add a sense of adventure to an action game.

All these unc CAGs that used to have adventure elements don't have any of that. What they have is awkward platforming sections and braindead Zelda puzzles about shooting the glowing eye with your bow and arrow. No real non-linearity due to the mission structure. In some cases fuckawful underwater segments. None of this has ever added anything to them and they were right to get rid of it. Obviously not saying Souls are better action games, but they're much better at blending action and adventure and if CAGs want adventure elements again, games like Dark Souls 1 are what they should look to for inspiration, not NGB or DMC3/4.

There are two leaders withing DDO, Kagachi who leads the military side and Uga, a woman who leads the political part of the organization.
We know that DDO is a corrupt organization, it is reasonable to believe that keeping Tokyo safe is more about having power and leverage over others politically than actually caring about finding some way to fix the entire fucked situation.
When Yakumo purifies the Dark Dragon and frees Tokyo all their power evaporates as they have no leverage anymore. They are essentially just some mercenary company. I suspect the political leader is very pissed off and desperately trying to grasp onto whatever power the DDO have left over Tokyo as things can start to rebuild.

Ryu is helping out the DDO in the sense he is keeping Tokyo safe as he can from fiends and daemons, but his number one goal would still be to completely rectify this entire situation if possible since Ryu is a pure and noble warrior.
Kagachi is also just a fighter and is pretty much only the military leader because he is the best warrior in the DDO.
We never see Uga in the game and it feels like the way Kagachi was left alive and the credits having DDO trying to kill Yakumo implies that the DLC will deal with this. That's my guess for now.

The game stays true to the core principles of fast, super aggressive and lethal frenetic combat. The game doesn't revolve around just time mechanics, it just has more of them than previous games in the series, but it is not the core the game revolves around the way it is in games like MGR and Sekiro.

Extra characters on this genre are just there to waste off resources instead of giving the same character more tools, a game should be designed around a character and he should be given optional tools which you can skip unlike the characters in DMC5 and NG, all you get with more characters is diluted tools and design along an unnecessary polarization. Best NG only has Ryu, best DMC only had Dante at launch, best bayo only had characters as status modifiers. MGR works because Dog and Brazilian have their own tailor made dlc, it goes on. But NG4 isn't that. Like rachel in NGS complements Ryu because she plays quite differently. If you just gave her tools to Ryu it'd be jarring and wouldn't fit well since while Ryu is designed around mobility Rachel is like a tank. Those short side dodges, her roll over with OL frames, generally slower attacks and if I'm not misremembering, way more grapples.
You get a similar deal with the girls in NG2S, their moveset doesn't really complement Ryu's moveset.

But the important part here is they need to not overstay their welcome, they're kind of like combat palette cleansers. What NG4 did with yakumo is totally different, for the worse. Like Ryu is the rachel of NG4 but his moveset rather than being in diametric opposition is kind of just slightly different flavor.

V being there didn't stop Dante, Vergil or Nero from being the most complex they've been to date; in fact because they needed a specific state for enemies to be executed by V, they ended up adding the ability to stun not just to all the other characters but to enemies as well.

Dante is the most complex he's ever been in 5, and that's even counting the mods/Switch version of 3 where you can use everything at once. And what's more, he's an excellently designed character on top of that, with each of his weapons being the best the series has seen.

Giving every tool you can imagine to Dante wouldn't have made him better, it would have bloated him. Doppelganger and Quicksilver wouldn't have been in the game if Vergil and Nero hadn't been playable, just like in 4. Even things like Nero's Bringer Claws and Cavaliere only exist in their current because they were conceptualized for one character and then given to another that would fit them better.

At every step of the way having more characters has only given more depth to these types of games. Or what you're going to tell me Summoned Swords is not one of the best mechanics in videogames?

This. I hate that MNM in NG2 is just abusing iframes for as long as possible. It's anti-fun. NG2 is my favorite entry (NG4 is close though) but it's only good on Warrior and Mentor. Acolyte is too easy and MNM is balanced like ass.

And the bosses still suck, in spite of everything else it does well, and they're even worse in NG2B. NG4 bosses so far have been pretty great. Might be the biggest improvement over the prior games that's strictly in NG4's favor.

Cetus's grab is ass though. Need to figure out how to avoid it better.

This. You need Gear and Gleam/Bloodraven on opposite sides of the controller because of the moves that use the Gear button while in Bloodraven. Makes it way comfier.

Block on L2 has been the case for most NG games, so Bloodraven goes on R2, and Gear goes on L1.

You've this game that seems really purposefully envisioned around the OT as your iframes. You do it to kill enemies and get iframes, great. Now everything else exists to delimb, and you need to find ways to do it with iframes. Sweet so you've got guillotine throw, unsurprisingly that's a staple. You've got your flying swallow which can either delimb on its own or more regularly go into a windmill slash to delimb, also great. You've got your head bop to reposition with iframes but then you need to do it into something with iframes. Your XXY is a great way to delimb and its fast enough that in a small fight its pretty safe. But you've got to stay far away from any of the longer strings, because none of them have iframes and you've got faster ways to delimb. Goes without saying that OT is way too pervasive so I wont go there.

It leads me to think that something like the ->Y of XXY->Y should have iframes so that if you do commit to the XXY, rather than the ->Y being a pointless risk (just OT the guy you just delimbed) its a "free hit" you get as a reward for getting an XXY out without being turned into a pincushion.

What was recycled for Dante, anymore than it was recycled in any other game before? His sword was massively expanded, same thing with Cerberus and E&I. Balrog and Cavaliere are new weapons. Faust is a new weapon and for the most part the same is true of DKA.

His Swords Formation and SDT are just new mechanics. The way Royalguard works also changed massively.

This just sounds like you don't know what Dante plays like in this game.

I think it works. I don't think the entire SERIES should adopt this principle. But for a game about being a ninja that wants to take the pacing of NG1 and just crank it up to a 11, it makes sense to me that rather than your HP being a resource you manage, its a slim buffer, and your actual life is your iframes.

I think the price was a massive factor. It doesn't look good enough or have the kind of cultural presence to demand $70-90 from users. Even just making it $60 and the Deluxe $70 or 80 would have been a huge boon I think.

I hope the DLC ends up being beefy enough to justify the $20 price.

It's not incomplete. For $70 you get the game. For $90 you get the game plus future DLC. Announcing future DLC doesn't make a game incomplete. Don't buy the Deluxe if you don't want to prepay for incomplete content.

That said, waiting for a sale is perfectly reasonable. It's just not an incomplete product. I preordered because I didn't wanna miss the skin and I don't know if they'll sell it later. I planned to get it at launch anyway so I grabbed the Deluxe so I can enjoy the costumes and weapons skins until the DLC comes out.

NG2 bosses are really awful and basically just don't interact with the mechanics of the game. It's an actual example of artificial difficulty, where they're just immune to damage for huge chunks of the fight. It's terrible. And yeah, Elizebet is the absolute worst. There is apparently a loop you can get into with dual swords with her, but that's just a terribly unfinished way to play the game, and as much as I enjoy NG2, that's my problem with it in a nutshell -- on MNM, the game basically requires you to stop playing the game and do the same few moves to progress.

I'm about halfway through and so far no. I have the same problem though, and I struggle getting it out in time to react to enemy attacks sometimes. It feels like the startup for attacks is too long for something that's meant to be used to respond to and interrupt enemy attacks.

I do think part of the idea though is to use it for blocking when you're not able to react with an attack. I often forget that's an option.

I understand using the flying pods next to them, but there is often no pod next to them. Is it actually possible too move from kite guy to the next? Without the pods are there other options beside the shuriken?

You get more tools later but shuriken is one. You can use Bloodraven mode with the shuriken to throw powerful projectiles that I think destroy their kites in one hit, at least on Normal. There's also a Bloodraven move you can unlock where you stand on your blade and come down in a large vertical swipe which works well.

I hope someone model swaps yakumo for stellar blade bitch, best of both worlds

Except unlike NG2, 4's UTs are actually balanced well and don't just trivialize every fights. Essense drop are random, and because there's no blues sometimes you just get the essense to try and survive longer too. More importantly there are tools better than UT in 4 and that really help breaks the UT chaining pattern.

UTs being a metter in 3RE makes the game feel even more repetitive since it always trigger at around the same time. I liked 3RE trying to remove essense but the charging UTs and the SoB definitely makes the combat way worse. A lot of the enemy design makes you spam other things anyway (SoB if you have no honor, and avoiding SoB on purpose was the only way to actually have fun).
Overall 3RE's gameplay was dumbed down. Automatic UTs, automatic instakills, automatic aiming vs riflemen, forced ninpo just to heal back..

These 3RE fags honestly trying to meme it into being a great game and better than 4 are being ridiculous. SoBs existing at all destroys your argument honestly.

It's great. I'm glad that they're making the characters feel very distinct with small details like that. I also like how Ryu's perfect dodge works versus Yakumo's.
That said, I do kind of miss the weapon swapping. I get why the Ninpo is there instead and it's fine but it was cool swapping weapons mid string to do cool shit with them, even if it was a little jank at times.

I've never used shurikens ever and I've beaten 1 2 and 3 on Hard, not master ninja, but you know... what's up with them?

Yeah, they did make Ninpo super strong, so I like that quite a bit, ended up using it A LOT more than I expected, but I do hope they revamp his systems a bit and introduce more than just the one weapon in the DLC.
