I like what classical I've heard to be honest, but I just like the use of guitars in post-rock. They provide texture and timbre that make my ears happy. A lot of the classical I've heard doesn't have this. I could be wrong tho

Pretentious self indulgent artfag slop... I listened to GYBE back in highschool when I started smoking weed, around 2006. Saw em in 2010 and again on their recent tour. 2010 was cool because that was their reunion tour before alleluja was released, but now it's just cringe. Post rock had its moment and it's over. SotC is the only thing that comes to mind but even that has stood the rest of time better than GYBE.

Or don't bother, it's a low number, which is why you haven't found anything particularly good yet. You simply don't like vidya as much as you think you do.

Anonymous No.724577463 [Report] >>724584659
The entire fucking point of this thread is OP just looking for validation over his music tastes. That's literally it.
He's not looking for video game recommendations. His post is only worded that way to avoid getting deleted as quickly.

This thread is
>I listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, what do you think of me and my taste, /v/? Also video games teehee
Notice how he (presumably OP)'s just constantly arguing about/defending his taste in this thread.

I don't follow /mu/ discourse, but did you get bullied out of /mu/ or something? Is this some kind of meme album that's impossible to discuss over there?

You probably never played any good games. Even just as far as the music goes, many video games have better music than this. Some examples that come to mind: NieR Automata, Odin Sphere, Undertale/Deltarune, Xenoblade games, Kid Icarus Uprising, several Final Fantasy games and more.

To me, it’s all ordered sound waves that sounds pleasant in the moment you’re listening to them, but beyond that, it has never made me introspect or think deeply about it like other forms of media do. Only pseuds really care enough about analyzing the meaning behind music. Most of it was written and composed in the moment without much forethought by the creator but I guess that’s what makes music set apart from other mediums; there’s a kinda magical energy to when things come together out of the chaos and that excitement translates to good music we listen to.

It's simple: the masses like repetition because through repetition the melody gets drilled into your head. People like things that are familiar and that they can remember. Through-composed music is something the masses can't stomach because it goes in one ear and out the other, if you played something through-composed to a layman and asked him to hum the melody afterward he wouldn't be able to do it. But something which has a simple melody that repeats over and over he can do it.

True, what I meant was more relative. There's a ton of music blogs that I still check up on that curate "obscure" japanese music that's often obscure only by virtue of not being based in an english speaking country. I'd wager the original shill on /mu/ dug it up from there, not quite like that one guy who found pic rel in a goodwill or whatever and ripped it. That would be /mu/'s greatest contribution to online music discussion if that album was actually any good.

A song and an interaction are experienced in two different ways.
The entry point into the two types of experiences are fundamentally different.
I don't think a game can play like a song, period. Even if music is a central theme to the game.

>what happened to /mu/?
I've thought about this a lot, as someone who was basically a power-user in my teens.
1- There's no fun in sharing weird stuff anymore. Streaming took over decisively, so no one gives a shit about curating their "library" anymore. You can get the algorithm to constantly feed you new stuff, more tailored to your tastes than digging through a bunch of mega links. The death of appreciating "albums" is a direct result of this.
2- Younger people use the internet as more of a social club than a forum. I'm not making a value judgement here, but it's harder to have a discussion when you're relegated to "generals" full of Discord schizos whose ritual posts comprise 2/3 of the thread.
3- Lack of gatekeeping. /mu/core was supposed to be required listening before you asked stupid questions, to expose you to acclaimed but slightly "weird" music if you're coming from a pop background. Now a lot of threads are something like "I just heard this song (Comfortably Numb) in a Tiktok, more like this???"
4- Sites like RYM, despite their obnoxious userbase, are better for finding things that might interest you. You can refine searches for specific genres, or maybe you'll get a cool rec in the middle of someone's essay about how King Gizzard helped them accept their queer identity, or whatever.

"core" stuff, even beyond /mu/, just feels unenforced these days. The sticky pic rel feels like it's about 10 years out of date culturally (if you can even claim modern /mu/ has any culture). If that's ever changed, /mu/ will officially be dead.

The pretentious tripfags and jokes about progressive dreamfunk and post-African repetitions were silly, but it gave a sense of community where we could poke fun at how "out-there" some of our favorite albums were.
I used to love Nothing But Black Metal November threads, which were basically pissing contests over who could find the most kvlt demo tape recorded in a cave in Siberia.
It was totally absurd, but it was nice to hang out with people who shared a niche interest. Roasting each others' charts, exchanging recs and links.

2015 was where I felt the biggest shift that was specific to this site. Previously the site just kinda mirrored (or rather foreshadowed) what was going on with the rest of the internet. When reddit deleted all the biggest pro-trump subreddits, those users all flooded here because their communities all told them that 4chan.org/pol/ would be the new hangout. I have a vivid memory of a 50-something year old coworker making a joke about "kekistan". It made me stop coming on here for like three years, and by the time I came back the site just felt completely different. But now I'm over it I guess and just can't leave again. I need some new strong aversion.

Looking at my music collection, I'd say fewer than 1% is "transcendental" (I have a couple thousand songs saved on my phone from my favorite bands but only a handful of songs that go beyond simply being pleasant) so you need to listen to a lot of stuff and be very selective if you want to have a deeper experience with music. There's not a lot of Beatles songs I dislike. I could listen to their entire discography in one sitting and I'd only lose interest during the Yellow Submarine soundtrack instrumentals they had nothing to do with. It's not like every track or even the majority are songs I'd choose to listen to on their own, but it all sounds good and most of them have at least something interesting going on with it. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the bulk of their popularity came from their personalities, though. They were just fun. They are technically overrated, but it feels unfair to say since most people aren't even really Beatles fans they just parrot what other people have said about them.

Pink Floyd has a little over four good albums. Most bands struggle to make one. I think less than being overrated, people misrepresent them as being a lot weirder than they are. A lot of big bands have a reputation that doesn't exactly match their setlist for one reason or another and I feel that way about Pink Floyd.

I'm going to let you in on a couple secrets. People who listen to a lot of music hate popular music because they think it all sounds the same while the music they listen to sounds unique. The reason it sounds unique is because it sounds bad and most people don't want to make bad music. Would you go to a restaurant that makes "unique" burgers? No, you know what a burger is supposed to taste like, why would you want something "so different"? Well, why do they? They do because they have "taste". Do you know what taste is? It's ironically the lack of it. As you get older, as you do something over and over again, like taste food, your body becomes immune to it, your senses dull. This is why kids can't drink coffee or alcohol and why adults feel like they're "over" sweets. Their taste buds are dead. They can no longer tell the difference between ice cream and antifreeze, they just know they're sick of ice cream.

That's why OP is gushing about literal noise.

Most unique music is bad because they actually made an earnest attempt at creating something new. Anyone can "paint by numbers" and achieve something "good." But you barely did anything. You're no better than a computer executing instructions written by an actual human. A real artist at least tries to find new patterns and formulas that sound good. They don't always succeed. In fact, they generally don't. But at least they tried. People listen to this music because they are interested in not just music as a disposable product but also from the creation side of things. "What sort of possible sounds and schemas are out there that haven't been popularized yet?" It's not merely consumption, but more like active research.

Sounds good but I don't see videogames having music like this any soon, it requires a very specific atmosphere and context to work.

Also I would believe getting a composer doing something like this and then another 30 to 60+ songs is... quite the task.

This is my opinion of course, videogames are an entertainment medium, doing something like this would be cool, but you need a really good composer flexing hard when it really is just not required.
