the yakuza series was basically everything nagoshi thinks is cool. without him it's a group of posers badly copying something they don't care about.

I don't know how much of the issues are related to him but everything after Y7 feels lost and confused in its direction. Y7 is supposed to be the baton passing moment to switch to the next generation of Yakuza without Kiryu etc. But every game after it continues with nostalgia bait and Kiryu. Judgement was supposed to be the action gameplay series but got cancelled after the second game. Then we get a wacky pirate game nobody wanted.

For sure but the og games had plot issues too. the ending of yakuza 2 is a dumpster fire. they’ve always had trouble following up their stories with sequels. Y1 -> Y2, judgement -> LJ, LAD7 -> infinite wealth, all of these experience a huge nosedive in main story quality.

I am not saying that everything under him was perfect but Yakuza had an identity and even with games that weren't quite as good, it felt like there was a uniform vision behind.

I think the entire series biggest problem has been the first entries(y1, judgement, LaD) are always the best stories they have to tell for the main characters and everything that follows is a significant drop in quality. recently though it's reached critical mass with LJ's god awful bullies who bully bullies are the real bullies to take down plot and then infinite wealth where they showed they clearly have no fucking clue what to do with ichibans character so they hamfisted kiryu into the game.

>Nishiki isn't a character despite being the main villain. You see him a whopping five times in the entire game and two of those times he doesn't even speak while the other two he's whining at Kiryu.
>Shimano is a non-character who is just a bald man who wants to kill Kiryu.
>You spend an entire chapter waiting for the Florist to get back to you so you go babysit his son for him essentially forcing a substory into the main story.

Y2 is a massive improvement even if everyone is a secret Korean because it's constantly moving and developing its characters while not having an impotent antagonist.

100% true. Yakuza reached peak balance, Judgement was alright and than everything went downhill.

This guy hasn't made a good game since F-Zero GX.

they wanted to get rid of him but couldn't do it through normal means cause that would be dishonorable or something, so what they did instead is that they kept on promoting him to higher levels within the company to the point he was no longer able to do his job since he went from having to work with only a team of 50 to over 300 employees so he ultimately stepped down on his own accord, but technically, it was underhanded shit meant to force him to the brink of having a mental breakdown so he can actually retire on his own to not stain the image of the company itself for firing him for whatever reason.

The modern Yakuza dubs are actually really good... except for the most important character in the entire series. It's a real shame for the other actors.
