Thoughts?

This is one of the N64 games I missed out on and I kinda want to play. This and Ogre Battle 64. The only N64 games I really played back in the day were mainstream stuff like Zelda and Mario and James Bond.

I have never in my life ever seen someone actually discussing this game. Is such a fucking meme, that the only reason people bring this game up, is just to mention that the N64 had a second JRPG besides paper mario.

Q64 has stayed in my mind more than FFVII. FFVII was good but I keep wondering what could have happened with Q64's battle system if it was improved by another team. The weird real time combat was interesting and the way stats interacted with it was cool. Your agility determining the size of your movement zone was cool because if you were more agile it really did make it easier to dodge attacks and if you had low agility it was impossible to dodge at times. Q64 and Hybrid Heaven stand out in my mind as the future of what a 3D RPG could play like but both ended up being genetic dead ends.

I used to rent this as a kid, and I loved it. I eventually got filtered because I couldn't fully wrap my head around the turn-based combat, but I enjoyed what I could of it. I think it was the first game I played with a day/night cycle too, and I STILL remember the field music 30 years later.

I find games from this gen extremely hard to go back to. I'm not singling out the n64 or anything as I feel the same about the ps1.

Why can't more unfinished games be unfinished the way Quest 64 is unfinished?

Today, an unfinished game is a game where the total scope of the game is there and runs terribly or doesn't run at all. Quest 64 though is a game that acts like it was completely finished, then areas, whole npcs, and parts of the script were systematically deleted before shipping.

Japanese devs had almost no interest in developing games for the N64 due to high production cost/difficulty and low sales of the system in Japan.
>The N64 only had 2 rpgs
It had a few more in Japan, Zool, Shiren 2, Robopon 64 and a few more I'm forgetting, not Japanese but Aidyn Chronicles is an RPG too.
Hybrid Heaven is also technically an RPG.

I bet it was mostly storage.
A CD can hold 600 megabytes. N64 cartridges can hold 64 megabytes at most.
Games were already brushing up against the PS1's storage limits. The original Crash Bandicoot famously had to use randomized compression they had to run it over and over to get the game small enough by chance. They had 4 bytes of free space on the CD.
Cramming a game into barely a tenth the size would be much more difficult, if not impossible. Super Mario 64 had a sophisticated programmable sound engine to remix a small library of sounds on the fly, all to reduce file sizes.

It's sad when you realize just how much of the game's potential they slashed and burned just to get it out the door, only for it to finally come out when OoT was right around the corner. I really do love its quaint graphical and music style, they almost come across as a "literal" next-gen interpretation of an SNES game to me. I just wish they weren't stuck in an extremely hollow game.

Because Nintendo bullied all the talent in the industry into going with Sony/Sega + cartridges sucked so no one wanted to work with them, there's a reason almost all the memorable games on the N64 wrte either made by Nintendo or made by companies owned by Nintendo

Nintendo spec'd hard into bring the platform for experimental 3D stuff, mainly platformers and action-adventure. Mario 64 pretty much defined what the system was for, to both consumers and developers.
Also, Nintendo were notoriously stingy about lending devkits to third parties, whereas Sony let anyone throw their shovelware on the platform.

a funnier statistic is to look at the number of 3D platformers on the Saturn. there were three; two of which were multiplats and one that was a licensed tie-in only released in Japan. If you want to know why the Saturn bombed, that's why. fifth gen was THE platformer gen, not having any major ones was suicidal.

quest 64's jp port is hilarious cause it fixes pretty much every fucking issue in the game, doubling the amount of gems all around, reducing the requirements for "critical" spells like heals and shield, nerfing the boss stats into the dirt so they're not grind walls, and adding an actual fucking ending.
It's a shame we never got that version in english until years later with fanslations.

The problem with Quest 64 is that it looks like you're supposed to play it like a mage or wizard when in reality it's a game meant to be played as a melee brawler.
Go into the water tree until you get a heal spell and then beat everything with your staff to raise your hit points.
I did Wind/Water my first playthrough because I didn't know any better but if I played it again I'd go Water/Earth.
Wind was absolutely fine but it's not as practical as Earth is end game.

The history of the development of Quest 64 is FAR more interesting than the game itself. What we got was essentially an alpha build of the game. The story was suppose to be way more expanded on, multiple party members, a less clunky magic system, actual currency, and battery saved data. However it was pushed out 18 months too early to try to beat Ocarina of Time. I dunno why they thought Quest 64 was going to compete with OoT but it ultimately ruined the game.

The game is completely terrible and only has contrarian faggots that pretend to like it to be edgy or something.
Anonymous No.724615718 [Report]
>>724608387
That's how I played the game. I found stick beatdowns to do more damage than most spells in the game. The only real strong offensive spell you get is Avalanche. Fire and wind are memes outside of magic barrier from fire. Water is only useful for healing and field utility.
