Not really. TO ME (anyways) Shawn became the very monster I spent my playthrough fighting against in the wasteland. He was near death anyways so I considered putting one in his skull a mercy for him and the wasteland.

The "Elder" is a headstrong, short sighted ignorant fool. He's so caught up in letting his anger drive his decisions he doesn't consider all the options and choose the logical best for the brotherhood of steel. He needs to be replaced.

The 3rd option, Desmondia? I think her name was. not really. she had 0 personality anyways. Decon was the only npc in that crowd that meant shit. Otherwise the railroad was only good for the armor lining it unlocks (which is really fucking dumb that is locked behind a story quest of all fucking places) otherwise? The Institute then decided that everyone on the surface are knuckle dragging idiots not worth saving and forgot what that they were suppose to be helping humanity.
Sean was the first Director to try and change it after learning he was kidnapped and that his parents were still alive.

I've been playing it recently and been having fun. Installed MAIM so bullets are actually dangerous, sexy tactical suit armor I need to find a lot of adhesive and ballistic weave to make, making those odd jobs quests for money actually important, and as soon as I killed the first deathclaw, never talk to Garvey again.

I'm just exploring and having a fun time making progress and thinking "Why were super mutants trying to take over this library in the first place and who set up all this security?". Story is ass, characters are mostly ass, but combat, junk system, and quickloot is good.

All the options were really poorly written. The Brotherhood of Steel is the closest acceptable faction.

The Institute felt oddly missing logical options to it, like joining it pigeonholes you into continuing their retarded plots instead of reforming them into a more constructive direction.

Raider factions should've been joinable instead of just auto-attack always-aggressive robots. They all may as well have just been random wasteland monsters for all the nuance that was missing.

Bethesda absolutely cannot write good settings, especially not Fallout, because they haven't known how to properly flesh out characters, factions and dialogues since Morrowind.

That's the shittiest part of it. Game gives us conflicting info on it. The kid Shaun was unable to grow and develop, but since he was one of a kind, nobody knew if he'd eventually start aging.

The wiping out thing never happens, probably because Bethesda forgot to add a trigger for that event after the end of the quest. Or maybe they changed plans and chose against wiping the settlement but forgot to erase that line, who knows.
Still, even if the settlement was wiped out, it wouldn't be too absurd. The mission to grow healthy crops on the surface is over, a success. The Institute doesn't need the farm anymore and wiping the family out means that they do not care about saving the surface dwellers, they just want good crops in case they have to live on the surface.

There are people who unironically think that, but just exploring the place and asking some people about its state tells a different story.
After the original cadre of scientists died, their descendants weren't on the same level. They're intelligent but not genius level brilliant. The Institute questline even features the recruitment/abduction of a wasteland scientist who could fix their power crisis because nobody inside knew what else could be done. They recruited Madison Li and likely many others. Scouting for talent is part of their reason for maintaining a discrete surface presence. They need wastelanders more than any of them would like to admit.

Facilities division tries really hard to maintain a nice Apple style facade but some of their engineers admit that they can barely keep the place running. The whole complex is a graveyard of technology, old wings are abandoned one after another and everyone is crammed into one polished area. Most branches of research were discontinued as the old talent died out and new generations decided to invest everything into their superhuman program. It's practically their religion, praying and performing rituals in hopes that one day magical superhumans are going to fix their shit.

A good writer could make the institute work. A closed off society that started after the collapse by scientists with abundant resources and very lacking moral compass, that morphed into a culture of extreme conformity, toxic positivity and heavy rejection of any sort of retrospection or questioning their goal (which is ill-defined / tweaked at will).
