The whole thing is a byproduct of our times, where western man really doesn't have the existential threats it did in the past, living in a society where he doesn't have to wonder where his next meal will come from, if he's going to have a roof over his head, etc. but feels completely empty because something intrinsic to his person is missing. It's not something tangible and material, but a piece of his soul, for lack of a better term. Without it, he drifts through life aimlessly and longs for an end to his banal existence, either figuratively by finding purpose or literally by death itself.
Cruelty Squad's protag got the ending he wanted.
