It just so happens that the industry became developed and known enough, akin to Hollywood, around the same time the Millenial sons and daughters of business wing of these companies came of age. These companies are now manned by people there because they knew people, or x and y's daughter wanted to work for the famous company Blizzard. It's commodification of a business as a status symbol. I consider Tim Cain the poster child for this type of practice because he hasn't exactly made anything decent since his role on the original Fallouts, but his clout and reputation have done more work to create a brand and myth of his role to the point he's often a nexus of connections and asked for his terrible advice and consultation in the biz.

We're long past the era where a team can release a 7/10 that sells just alright enough to break even and green-light a sequel that becomes a 9/10. Even when a game launches in a good state the AAA industry still breaks the teams apart rather than keeping them together to build upon what they created and keep the team chemistry that got built up during that time while corporate executives scratch their heads and wonder why suddenly games take x3 times longer to develop with ever ballooning costs. Love them or hate them, the FF7 remake trilogy is emblematic of the overall benefits to the industry of keeping a solid team together. Overall quality is up for debate but the fact that it's looking like they're on track to release an entire AAA trilogy of games almost entirely within 1 console generation is an achievement in of itself that hasn't been seen since the Mass Effect trilogy over a decade ago.

I used to dream of becoming a game developer when I was a kid (my dream was getting a job at Insomniac, because they were my favorite devs growing up playing Spyro and the Ratchet & Clank) but I gave up pursuing that dream in high school from just looking at how the industry was going, not due to culture war bullshit but just the sheer lack of any sort of reliable job security. Why bother learning to code with the ambition to enter an industry where you're paid less than the average for the same skill set, with the expectations of crunch culture, and without even the expectation of royalties at the end of it all, yet alone job security? "Indies" slowly becoming the mainstream as indie teams create desirable games in a faction of the time it takes for 1 single AAA release isn't a shocking turn in the industry, it's merely the logical endpoint of an inherently flawed business model pushed by the AAA space.
