there are multiple reasons, the biggest is that the point of these remakes is to streamline the Roto lore and tie them into the canon of the manga.
The problem of starting with 1, as it was originally, is that you can't reference the events of 3 that come before it because it wasn't exactly planned to be a trilogy. 3 is a prequel to 1, but 1 wasn't necessarily a sequel to 3 originally if that makes sense.

These remakes are done ensuring that they tell a continuous story all the way through if you play them as intended.

It’s getting to the point where if I want to play an old game I’ve never experienced before, I’m going to pick the original version not just because of any censorship concerns, but because the older games are just faster. I don’t want to sit through a remake that’s double, triple, or even larger than the original because it gets padded with extra cutscene fluff and cinematics that drag on. I want to see a still image of a monster on my screen and fight it. I don’t want to watch it roar and flail around like it’s having a wrestling introduction that wastes my time.

All these remakes exist to waste your time.

LMAO, the Dragon Zombie duo boss fight is filtering so many people. I got fucking wrecked the first time I fought them, so I swapped around some equipment to mitigate the types of damage they deal and managed to take them down with two more tries.

That boss fight, the one in Damdara to get Erdrick's Armor, and maybe Robbin' 'Ood (simply because he comes with two lackeys who can heal and he hits like a truck) are the only difficult boss fights in the game. I will say, though, that I got wiped out by random encounters very often, especially in the area south of Cantlin and in the DragonLord's Castle.

I don't know, I guess they made a game with no audience. I own the NES games, the GBC versions, and have access to various flavors of translated emulated editions. This was never something that would be on my radar, I already have all the DQ1/2 I could ever want. It looks like they expanded the amount of content and enhanced graphics and mechanics alike just like with DQIII (where DQII even has a new playable character this time etc) but I think the lack of hardcore early Dragon Quest fans, plus the demand for $60 price points, is why its not a massive success in the West. I'm glad it came to PC at all to be honest, though Denuvo is fucking infuriating conceptually. Still I think there's only so much you can do to enhance DQI while still making it feel like DQI (ie there are no party members), so I think they've done a good job with it. I think it would have sold way more if they priced it max at $30-40 or so; they realized that trying to sell each one alone at $60 was not going to cut it as compared to III which was more advanced and a more standard JRPG party structure but they could go farther and ensure that each of them are a good bit cheaper and would probably sell better.

It’s my first time replaying it in close to a decade. I’m currently at castle Trodain.
Having fun but the game is definitely a lot easier than I remember. Psyche up feels like a cheat code against bosses, but I do remember late game bosses are able to nullify your tension.
In terms of a modern style DQ game I can’t imagine anything being any better.
It maintains the core of the early games and adds some quality of life improvements that don’t feel intrusive.

I'm playing it. DQ1 was fun for what it was and 1 party member was a pretty unique experience, it felt like I had to strategize a lot more than normal. There were a few times where it felt like I was left to the mercy of RNG though since you need to rely on Cop Out at times and it's not a guaranteed chance but all in all it wasn't too bad. Started DQ2 and got the second party member and it seems cool so far.

I would almost agree but I personally found Cop Out undermines this far more frequently than reasonable. I think the game would have been a lot better if the skill wasn't in the game and enemy damage output was re-balanced around that. Or even if Cop Out had diminishing success rates like Protect in Pokemon. The fact that it's optimal to sit there and just redirect hits makes fights that could be a lot of fun with the number of skill available is unfortunate.

Dragon Quest has been using the 2D sprites in a 3D environment model since Dragon Quest 7 in 2000.

3 is the more complete game. 1 is the very first JRPG so is super basic and 2 is excruciating difficult. So there was more work needed to make the games apt for modern audiences.

With 3 all they did was apply some modern sprite work, add an additional class and add some additional collectibles and a some ESG mandated censorship and boom you got a modern JRPG.

With 1 & 2 besides all of that they have to pretty much remake the games structure wise in order to make them more palatable for said audience. Even to this day the original NES Dragon Warrior 3 is very playable as that was the game that set the formula others followed. 1 and 2 not so much, they feel much more archaic.

I went from things DQ1 was too easy to suddenly getting kind of fucked up in the second have. If you get hit by a status effect things spiral out of control very quickly. It doesn't feel like it's balanced around having only 1 character. It doesn't even matter though because thread game automates after every fight. I'm having a great time with it! I like what they added with the faeries. They're really cute in Japanese.

The Faerie outside of the crafting house will also mention that your sigils have a better chance of activating whenever you have support skills active, she just doesn't say which ones. Focus and Reheal were always active for me in boss fights, so I saw a good amount of Soul Sigil activations. The Sigil that makes you regen MP whenever you defend was fucking clutch for getting through the last dungeon on Draconian as well.

I used the same method to take down DragonLord as well, though I used Muster Strength and the Sigil version of it instead of Wild Side.

The fact that many of the complaints from III were improved in updates led me to expect that the same mistakes wouldn’t be repeated in I and II…
To get straight to the point, I felt that they couldn’t even learn from the experience of III, and without harsh user feedback, they can’t even make proper adjustments.
First of all, even an amateur would understand that I needs to be balanced with the premise that you’re playing alone.
Simple losses in power can be chalked up to “guess my level’s too low,” but defeats due to excessive use of tricky tactics left me completely unsatisfied on numerous occasions.
Since I’m alone, there’s no recovery option.
Sleep, paralysis, and the like are bad enough, but by the endgame, even regular enemies start spamming instant-death magic in droves—I genuinely have no idea what they were thinking when they made this.
Even if you read the boss’s patterns and act accordingly, you’d often get stunned by a roar, collapse, and lose.
By the time you reach the final dungeon, you can’t even properly deal with regular enemies anymore.
Despite fixing this in III, once again there are hordes of enemies with absurd durability and overwhelming attack power, making it unthinkable to take them on one by one with physical attacks.
I’ll say it again: I’m playing alone.
I really wish they’d design the game with that in mind.

I have regain mp and hp on level up enabled to reduce the tedium, it doesn't make the game easier but it does mean less time spent teleporting back and forth to the inn.

In the original game and the SFC version that I played the original game was 90% grinding, you simply could not progress through the game until you reached a high enough level to be able to cast the healing spells needed to survive in specific dungeons or boss fights, as outdated as 1 is I think they did improve this with skills like cop out and dodgy dance and a few others but sigils definitely need better explanation and I feel one more element is missing.

Cant wait to get to the 2nd game, I'm expecting it to be on par with 3 now that the remake will likely fix up some of the egregious difficulty issues, new content, 4th party member etc to make it the best version of 2

As pointless as these weird 3d 2d remakes look, DQ2 is much more interesting to me as I never finished the game and its SFC remake, based on DQ5 engine, looks a lot rougher than DQ3 SFC. Stiill, I'm not gonna pay for it. And checkign what Squeenix changed with its ethics department and looking for mods also would just be a pain. So I did not bother downloading the Switch version, and even when paying I don't want Denuvo running on my PC anyway.
TLDR too much to mind, I'd rather finish the original than try to play this filtered version.

Its excellent so far with DQ1. Its the definitive version of the game for sure, there's so many things to consider with modern DQ equipment and abilities that its actually engaging and fun to be solo, unlike the original where you're just attacking and healing in most fights and if that didn't work it meant your numbers weren't high enough and you needed to just grind more.

Same. 2 is an entirely new experience for me and I've been getting my shit pushed in a lot. I'm at the city in the SW part of the map and the random encounters at sea have nearly wiped me out. The enemies in the sea a few seconds south of Midenhall obliterated me, so I just made a mad dash down to the area I could see on the map to get it on my Zoom list. It pretty much feels like a much more complete experience across the board. NPCs react to her, she reacts to a bunch of different events, has dialog with the Dragonlord, etc. Kinda makes me wonder if there wasn't plans to have her actually become a party member at some point.
