If you want to make games as a complete noob there is no other option. Stop deluding yourself with Godot tutorial hell for the love of God. Fuck your 3D aspirations too you’re just gonna waste your time.

There's nothing GM does that Godot doesn't do better and easier. I'll be the only motherfucker with actually deep years of experience in both engines ever posting in this thread btw.

I’m not sure how Godot is easier especially for beginners who have no idea what the actual fuck they are doing and just want to make games.

add rpgmaker to your list

By having proper support for basic functionality such as input events, delta and audio. The fact that GM still relies on hardcoded key presses is mindbogglingly stupid and primitive, and its lack of features forces you to write your own solutions so people who get into GM end up writing a lot of low level code for basic functionality without realizing how archaic it all is.

Why not learn C# and use Unity?

I think that if you are over the age of 15 and are not already invested in coding and modelling, just use RPG maker. You dont need to learn to model, just draw, and you dont need to grapple with coding, the engine has a massive support base where you can just type into google what you need and it will come up a soloution for you to implement.

At least make something rather than spending years just learning to make something and then ultimately making nothing.

the game maker Event > Action setup is the perfect onramp. you could give anyone game maker and they could get something playable in a day. godot is not like that at all.
undertale would not exist if toby fox stuck to godot.

When you started your goblin game how much experience did you have already? You’re the best indie dev on /v/ rn so I’d find you to be a solid litmus test.

>gaymaker
What people never grasp is that while Godot isn't AAA level quality in regards to 3D, GameMaker is somehow EVEN WORSE for 3D than Godot. Like barely fucking usable, you're practically enginedevving 3D inside of a 2D engine.

One of Godot's underrated strengths is how close the 2D and 3D code is. Like all you have to do is just use Vector3 instead of Vector2, and every 2D node has a 3D equivalent.

OP is saying do 2D entirely and forget 3D

>experience
I'm 34 years old and have been working as javascript developer for 10 years now. When I was 14 I fiddled with RPG Maker but never completed any project, most I did was a custom battle system kinda like Grandia and a menu system for a card battler game. Then in 2019 I started making 2D games in Game Maker and after 2 or 3 projects that I left incomplete I moved on to Godot to try my hand at 3D stuff. Worked on a rail shooter for about 2 weeks and then moved on to the goblin game at the beginning of Janurary 2025. When I moved to Godot I had 0 experience with 3D be it making games or making models.
>TLDR
lots of experience in coding but 0 on every other area
>You’re the best indie dev on /v/
lol no way that's the case. Other anons have released full games already and others look way cooler than mine. But hey thanks for the compliment! :)

I've heard some people complain about the camera in 2D Godot games not being pixel perfect or not smooth enough or some shit. I remember having to render the game at x2 the intended internal res in Game Maker to have a 100% smooth camera tho

How much coding did you have to use in Gamemaker to make everything work?
Anonymous No.724797660 [Report] >>724797784
>>724797345
That's a very broad question. If you mean having the camera working, it's easy. But I had to render the game at twice the size of the pixels I was painting on screen so the camera could sit "between pixels" giving it a very smooth feel. Don't know if that's the way of doing it but it sure worked for me. Here's the game if you want to check it out:

game itself is a roguelike with AP based combat. It took a few months to code, the levels are randomly generated and that took a while
