Every time I feel the urge to play Strive, I just boot it up and play around in training mode with Bridget and I realize how lame it is, then I go back to +R.

The only one I can stomach is Baiken, I think all the pieces to her kit fit really well together. She's very satisfying to play. I do miss the various options you get out of parry that she had in Xrd. And to be frank, I always thought she was lame in +R, and her walk cycle is disgusting.
Now that I think about it, Strive is about the only good looking Guilty Gear game. X and +R look about the same, with the latter feeling really slapped together and ugly at times. Xrd looks nice but I honestly find the designs to be kinda retarded looking. Strive is absolutely gorgeous, and the music is good, too. It feels very weighty and satisfying to land blows and stuff. It's a shame about... everything else.

I think it's on a case by case basis for me. I think Baiken looks better with the bigger hair and no coat, but Elphelt is really weird. In general, I don't get why they went with streetwear for so many characters. Like... why does Bridget have a jacket? Why does May have a hoodie? Elphelt was fun because she was wearing a wedding dress but was packing like three different guns and grenades, now she's dressed like a country singer. I really don't get it. I disagree about the homogenization - maybe in physical size, but as far as the designs go, I feel each one feels unique, they're just... odd, I guess? Lots of weird decisions across the board

As far as the "discourse", I've come to just accept it. I think Bridget's original story is really poorly written anyway. In a vacuum, looking at AC, you have this kid who was raised as a girl under threat of death and leaves home to prove his masculinity. However, he still insists on dressing and acting super girly and is always super happy. There's a dissonance in his presentation as a character versus his supposed conflict. If he was really sincerely wanting to be masculine, you'd think he'd take the fucking outfit off at least. You could say, well, it's all he knows, but we have real life examples of people raised one way but that conditioning not sticking and their inherent behavior and identity taking over when they're out of the oppressive environment. That's not how humans work.
Strive recontextualizing the old writing as him insisting upon a masculine veneer makes since with how he repeatedly implied his behavior was an act, him asking Baiken to teach him to be less ladylike (which reads like a cope to me), and him still presenting as a girl. Strive's characterization of Bridget is of someone who was born being forced to be something, who then continued to force another thing upon themselves, and is finally accepting that they are simply who they are, instead of a label. I think that's why the symbol on his hood changed from a male one to an androgyne one. Granted, he also had female symbols on his old design, which makes the fusion of the two on his Strive outfit very meaningful.
If people want to interpret this as identifying as a girl, that's fine. It makes those people happy and it means something to them. I see it as less cut and dry, and I still consider Bridget a boy. I think the whole point of the character is that it doesn't matter.

Xrd players complain because it's not Xrd. The damage is much higher and options to save your ass much fewer than in Xrd. No quarter meter options, no danger time bullshit, little to no options to fly away, etc.

+R people have the obvious talking point of prefering older fighting games. Bajillion options, many of them unusable, thousands of knowledge checks and so on.

If you love Xrd because of what it is, you obviously won't like Strive as much.
If you love +R because it's mostly jank-less old fightan, then obviously much more modern take of Strive won't sit well with you.

But if you're in it for Guilty Gear, an anime fighter with characters who all do different shit instead of cookie-cutter chain-launcher-air chain-finish, high damage, options to ridicule the opponent a bit, etc. it's a perfectly fine game.
Just not one you'll be able to flaunt having mastered 20 years into the future. You can autism this thing hard but it will take you like 1-2 years to stand at the top, not a decade or more like in +R (and other legacy fighters).

Special note for people who explicitly liked some character. Of the Xrd newbies, Leo is still Leo but the girls went through full redesigns. No more towers for Jack-O, no arsenal of guns for Elphelt. If you liked those, you have to stick to Xrd, sadly.

both. you have very few gatling options. you don't have yellow rc or frc or force breaks or really anything to spend bar on other than rc. air movement is weird and kind of shitty to encourage just running in with grounded normals.

i don't think the game is awful. i like things like rc drift. still, you have next to no freedom, and it's still unbalanced as fuck.
