english or french dub?

i see that the EN cast is stacked with some big names. but the game seems to be set in not-paris and by a french team. so maybe french is the way to go?

I saw a simple comparison between the two versions. Gustave and Maelle reuniting after the beach had some impact in English voices. The French voices sounded really casual about it.

The devs went with dual language thanks to the audience wanting it, but the French voice actors didn't sound very thrilled about their job.

This is never how it works. 99 out 100 times a big non-Asian game has an english voice cast, that's the primary way you're meant to play the game. That's the way the lip sync and the expressions and body language are tuned. The other languages are usually just a backup option.

There's no extra "authenticity" you get for choosing French in E33. It was made to be primarily made in English. Reminds me of the people insisting you HAVE to play the Metro games in Russian because it's more real and accurate or something, then the devs laughing at it and saying English was the obvious main language.

I see this happening quite often, why? Is it because of anime or localizers or something?

If you play a game in a language you do not understand, you are not getting the full emotional experience. Lines will not be memorable to you. The subtlety of the language will be lost on you. You will not understand the full range of the language by simply reading text on the bottom of the screen. This goes for any game, unless the dub is total dogshit like a budget PS1/2 RPG.

I played it in french because I'm a native speaker and even if the dub was mediocre I just couldn't bring myself to put it in burgerish when the world building and aesthetic was so clearly french, it just felt jarring.

Just like some Japanese games, there are other titles written by devs from someplace else with the language being generally made for a non-English approach. Its actually rather disappointing that, aside from Japan, when some developer makes something that is massively culturally informed by/written for a certain language, yet decides to put most of their money into English simply for a pragmatic global release money decision because they know a lot of burgers and others in the anglosphere won't play a game in another language if its not Japanese.

Was it mediocre? Its kind of strange that the devs couldn't do both with something that big, like find some local French celebs or big actors to record the French version even if not known outside of Franch speaking regions, but then also invest in English ones. I think Ubi of all people did this for several Assassin's Creed titles where they got pretty well known performers from AC Unity, Greek ones from the Odyssey dub etc.

Pick fucking French. English is overrated actors with idiotic AUTHENTIC CASTING. So authentic that they have role of 17 years old girl some 30 years old hag that cannot initiate young girl voice and tries her best to be cutesy and kawaii as fuck. Also american mutts when they see anything resembling asian ofc give asian voice to Lume. Lume is white for me. Also they constantly mumbling in English saving their voice for better projects.
Overall low effort english casting. At least french cast casted real girl for a role and not some asian cunt for 'asian' looking woman.
